Does anyone know of applicants who have matched into internal medicine without Step 2 scores? Most of the posts here say how there are programs who will not rank applicants who are missing a Step 2 score while some programs do not explicitly have a policy and may not emphasize it as much. Have you heard of anyone matching without having both scores or missing one of the scores before rank list deadline?

From what I've seen, the program will tell you if they want your step 2. If they don't say, I think the general thought is that it's not needed, but not having it might cause you to be ranked lower. Personally, I had a friend who matched to a really good top 10 anesthesia program and didn't take her CS exam until April (I know it's not the same specialty). I think most places are a little more strict about wanting the CK.

Yes, lots of people, including myself. But you really should get that taken care of.

It depends on if you're a US or a foreign medical grad. If you go to a US med school, there are programs that won't rank you, but there's still plenty that will... and you'll probably match.

If you're a foreign grad, you will be removed from the match unless you have Step I+CK+CS done. Like, without ECFMG verification, you will literally be unable to match. You probably won't get all that many interviews even.

I'm guessing because gutonc is heme/onc at what I think is a well-regarded competitive academic institution (or if not that is an attending in a very competitive location) that ALL THOSE MANY years ago that he matched he had the kind of app that med students who match without step 2 have, it's basically implied that he's awesome. I don't know how awesome your CV is compared to gutonc's OP, let's just assume you're not as aweseome as a safe bet.

I did all this BS more recently, US AMD MD from a well regarded school, and while I did not have the kind of app that gets people matched with no Step 2 CK, my app didn't totally suck ass. In any case, the Dean of my school during June advising told me I better have Step 2 CK scores in by rank list time or I would not match. NOT MATCH. NOT MATCH. I want the words to reverberate in your very gut. I interviewed at over 30 programs and it was made VERY clear to me "hey no big deal we like your step 1 but we want that step 2 CK by rank list time"

I mean barring a first time fail or physical illness or a terrorist attack or something, or just the ****tiest advising in the world, why would you do this to yourself? why would anyone on God's green Earth these days try to match without at least Step 1 and Step 2 CK done?

I just ranted about this in another thread because I'm trying to dispel any myths that somehow programs are OK with you not having on file having passed LICENSING tests T MINUS 4 MONTHS to hire. To the guy who said if they don't say anything then whatever, SILLY LOGIC. And do not conflate programs' seeming laxity for CS in AMGs with CK. Or their laxity in offering interviews without either.

Turns out most programs don't seem to think they need to explain to you you need YOUR LICENSING TESTS PASSED. They don't remind to tie your shoes either. You're a professional and I think they are assuming you'll see to it you get your MD and pass the steps to get your temporary license to practice under supervision to go with it. You get time to do this, and yes, it might not be until Feb when they sit down that they say to themselves, "where the **** is this person's Step 2 CK?"

Do some programs rank people without CK? Sure. Are there plenty of applicants as special as you snowflake that have those scores in? Sure. Do you really want to be ranked lower than them just for not passing a test you have to take regardless on time?

Trying to match without Step 2 CK in, or hell even CS, should really be the path of greatest disaster you were somehow forced down. Definitely never sit for a step you have good reason to think you're gonna fail of course. But you should plan your fourth year for a successful match, and that includes getting these damn scores.

FFS if you actually give a **** about matching please try to get all 3 steps passed and scores in by rank list deadline

OP sorry to be harsh, but EVERYONE GET THE FANTASY OF MATCHING WITHOUT STEP 1 or STEP 2 CK IN BY FEB out of your heads please
