Does anyone know what % of pod students match into one of the residencies that they rank, and do NOT have to enter the scramble process?

Also, is there a "magic number" for the number of programs to rank to have a good chance to match into one of them?

If you don't have any idea as to numbers or %s any insight or experience on the process would be very helpful.

Thanks!

I believe that match % has recently been around 70-80 percent of students... and same with program spots. You'd have to search around casprcrip.org or email them for exact numbers.

If you want to ensure a match, then get a decent gpa/knowledge to give yourself options, work hard on clerkships, visit other programs to give yourself more options, interview broadly and well, and rank many programs (rank a few backups even if you think, or are told, that you are a shoe-in at a program you like following the interview). Scrambling is not the worst thing in the world if you are a good student, so don't rank programs you truly wouldn't want. Still, ranking many good programs is never a bad idea since scramble will have limited options (esp in upcoming matches) and scrambling students, even fair/good students, will possibly have to be very flexible on location to get good/decent training.

Thanks for the info Feli.

Do you have any idea why the scramble rate has been so high? Out of the students that do have to scramble, how many of them do end up getting a residency spot? And how much flexibility do scramble students have in choosing a residency if they do have to scramble?

the aacpm website keeps stats on these things from year to year and it is completely different from year to year. The scramble is a total crap shoot, sometimes great programs scramble and sometimes they don't.
