I need some advice. My BF just matched into a great program in NYC for EM and I'm super happy for him. I'm currently a third year DO medical student and he is a fourth year MD student. I want to be able to try to land in NYC in the future; my dad trained for residency in NYC as well.

I'll be honest, I'm not an amazing applicant. Didn't do well on Step 1 (below average). I'm currently studying for Step 2 and hope I crush it. I'm planning to apply broadly for IM and OB/GYN programs. I know connections matter and I thought I would be able to schedule some audition rotations in the NYC area but with COVID-19, that is looking bleak. Does anyone have any advice on how to navigate this during residency interviews? Is it bad to bring up a boyfriend or significant other on a personal statement? Can I reach out to programs to potentially get an interview if I'm interested in being in NYC in general? Has anyone navigated this before?

Thanks for all your help and please stay safe.

Would definitely make mention of your desire to be on nyc and your dads
History of training... but obviously only to the programs in nyc.

If there is a program at your SO’s hospital, have him talk to them about you.

I would let them know that you have family connections to the area. Either in your personal statement or interviews. Either that your dad trained in NYC or you want to follow in his footsteps, live there, etc.

I would also consider sending an email to the program coordinator mid October during interview session if you haven't received an interview to let them know you have interest in their program because of your connections. Programs like to know you're serious and a plus is if you'd want to stay in the area.

Okay this is helpful, thank you! I do intend to stay in the area and I wondered if it would negatively impact me if I mentioned by BF is a resident.

It won't negatively impact you, however it is honestly MORE impactful if you two happened to be engaged. When I applied I said "significant other" or "partner" instead of girlfriend during interviews cause boy/girlfriend just doesn't sound as serious unfortunately. Letting people know your SO works in NYC will further prove that you want to be there

I agree with rokshana. I would have your boyfriend talk to his program.

I would leave out boyfriend in the personal statement. Your NYC dad and plan to stay in the area is compelling enough. Bf doesn't come across as serious.

Dads are forever, boyfriends can change.

I know, I know. It is a risk I'm willing to take. I want to train in NYC anyways so I'll place more emphasis on that.

I was in a somewhat similar situation to the OP, and that's when I got engaged, and was married 2 days after med school graduation. Don't plan your life around a boyfriend/girlfriend, plan your life around a spouse

See, we're waiting to get married until we're in the same place for an extended period of time. We've been long distance for three years.

Moving for your "boyfriend" can make a young woman sound silly and non career-minded. Moving to the same city as your "fiance" is only reasonable. Semantics matter here.

Fortunately, there are a great many programs in the greater NYC area.
