Hey, I am kind of confused. Looking at the MSAR at for example Emory and the Medical college of Georgia there really is not a big difference in the percentages of students matched to more 'competitive' residencies such as orthopedics. Even looking at schools like Yale the percentages seem quite similar to other less competitive schools. So my question ...... what's the point of going to a more competitive medical school in terms of getting into a good residency? Looking at the statistics it doesn't seem there is much of an advantage, and moreover, wouldn't it be better to go to a not as competitive school and maybe get a good GPA and overall be ranked higher in the class? I asked in med student forum b/c I figured you guys would be able to answer this better. Thanks for the help!

Just because med students at Emory didn't want to go into a competitive field doesn't mean they didn't have the ability. While both are fine med schools, Emory probably has many more students match at big name schools. It is a big difference to match Internal Medicine at Johns Hopkins or the local hospital down the road. If you go to a big name med school, you have a better chance of attending a big name residency. Your g.p.a. issue is up to you. I'd say if you want to enter Derm, you need grades and more from whatever school you attend.
