Math or Medicine

I'm currently a rising junior who is planning to take the MCAT this summer. I am finding it extremely difficult to study the body systems as I find the material terribly boring and a pain to memorize. I've already completed all of my pre-reqs, and I had no idea body systems could be so bland. When I took biology it was all problem-solving and essentially no memorization.

I am much more motivated to learn mathematics than to read anymore of EK bio.

So is medicine the wrong career path for me?

Considering the first two years of medical school (at most schools) is learning bodily systems inside and out I would reconsider...

Approach physiology as math. Because most of it is just that. It's a bunch of balancing left and right. If this value goes up, this must go down.

However, if you really don't enjoy memorization. Then... medicine is gonna be a long arduous and path. Not like it isn't already. But if you don't enjoy the ride, why get on?

Maybe approach your studying a bit different. Honestly, the teacher for physiology makes a big difference. Trust me, I love renal physiology. Most people HATE it. But the teacher I had for renal physiology was a total babe first of, and she made it easy to understand. I can talk about countercurrent multiplication until I am blue in the face.

Also, try talking out body systems like they're a story. A prime example is reproductive cycles. Day 1 through Day 28 for females are a unique story.

This isnt a necessity though, a slightly overweight grumpy man full of nothing but human physio and sarcasm made me love anatomy and physiology.

Then again, most of my peers had the same teacher and hated him and the class, so... maybe it IS a requirement :/.

If you don't like what you're doing, step back and take a serious look at your priorities. Do you really want to be a doctor? How badly? Why? Would you be happy doing anything else? On SDN it doesnt seem like there is any other career path outside the medical field, but amazingly enough there are tons. Dont commit to four years of med school if you dont like what you're doing. I think surviving med school is more about how much you like what your learning in comparison to how much brains you have. Although, being smart is probably a plus... 🙂
