The Barnett family buys enough propane to heat their house for 60 days during a normal winter. Due to a particularly harsh winter this year, their propane use increased by 25%. For how many days will the same amount of propane last for the Barnett's?

My guess that it would be 45 days.

If they used 25% more fuel that means they will have 25% less time to use it.

So if they have 60 days subtract 25% of it and you'll get 45 days.

Another way to look at this is they have only 75% of their original days until their tanks run out.

0.75*60=45

I thought it would be 45 too but the correct answer is 48 😳

48 it is..

This is how I would do it...

Suppose under normal condition they need 120 units of fuel for 60 days...Thus per day they would use 2 units of fuel....

Now when the winter is harsh their usage increases by 25%... thus per day usage become 2.5 units...

If 2.5 units fuel is used per day... it will take 48 days to use 120 units of fuel..

I hope this helps...

divide 60/1.25 = 48

b/c look: x = 60, where x = amount of propane used

there amount of propane increased by 25% so now: 1.25x = 60. now divide 60 by 1.25 to get 48! 🙂

Assume they use 1 gal/day (total 60 gal for 60 days). A 25% increase means they are using 1.25 gal/day. If they still only have 60 gal:

(60 gal)/(1.25 gal/day) = 48 days

Hope that helps!

Haha wish I had known the correct answer ahead of time

Okay, round two.

Lets say for 60 days they used 1 tank per day so the proportion would be

60 days /1 tank gives you 60 days lasted

For them using 25% more we'll say 1.25 tanks are used per day

So 60 days / 1.25 tanks per day gives you 48 days!!!

EDIT

DANG IT THEY GOT TO IT!!! NUUU!
