I remeber reading this on some med school admissions webpage (sorry I forgot the link)...hope it helps all the people who are applying right now.

(GPA-2) * (MCAT) * (1.25 if URM) * (1.1 if between ages 18-26) = index score

your index score determines what range of schools you will get in


index = 70+ ....... a top ten medical school
index = 65+ ....... a top twenty medical school
index = 60+ ....... a top thirty medical school
index = 55+ ....... a US medical school

thanks for the laugh. according to that formula, a traditional, non-URM applicant with a 3.6 and 34 wouldn't even get into a US medical school. that, my friend, is completely bogus.

(3.6-2) * 34 * 1.1 = 59.84 = US medical school

oops, i assumed my own age... i'll be 20 through the application cycle. good thing i've got higher than a 3.6, 34 then. otherwise i'd have to look into the carribean. :laugh:
 
Premeds' fascination with formulas and numbers is both laughable and sad.

When will you people learn that there are no damn formulas . Put down the calculator, cap the mountaindew, close the MSAR, and go get some fresh air. Live a little

it's all good lars. my concern was smothered in sarcasm. i am more than sure that adcoms look at a variety of other things to provide an acceptance, ie interview, essays, lor's, ec's, etc.

if it were truly based on a numbers-only scheme, the lengthy application process wouldn't make sense. i think it's a little unwise to pin (or deject) all your hopes based on two numbers.

I got a 55.9, and I'm now a 4th year at Johns Hopkins... was also accepted to several other "top 10" schools.

I think the formula is pretty useless...
 
There is the old.....Gpa/10 + MCAT=>65
Which say that with a 3.5 and a 30 your good..and for every tenth from a 3.5 you are you need an mcat one point higher.
course this ofrmula had problems too

that would mean an mcat of 39+

It all depends on your interviews! English is my second language and I read a bit slower than others, thus a low MCAT verbal...wait until Step I, I'll SHOW everyone it does NOT correlate with success in med school. I had A's in all of my English minor courses, even 300 and 400 writing-intensive courses, I had A's in upper division sciences, three upcoming research publications, extensive volunteer experience through my church and leadership in my college's volunteer groups, I was a young reapplicant...

Last but not least...I have excellent social skills, I KNOW I did great in all of my interviews b/c I made sure I had good eye contact, smiled, etc....PRACTICE your interviewing with a friend I know in my case it made a difference.

This formula is just for fun i doubt it has ever been used by any Admissions Committee anywhere...

Actually... there are formulas... lots of schools use them to determine cut-offs. 😉
 
Well, since like 80% of SDNers get into med school compared to like a 50% national average, here's my revised formula. 😀 Multiply your total by an arbitrary factor of 1.1. Where did i get that number? 😕 well, the original one had 1.1 so i figured that SDNers must be 1.1 times better than typical applicants..hehe.

(1.1 if you are a regular SDNer) * (GPA-2) * (MCAT) * (1.25 if URM) * (1.1 if between ages 18-26) = index score

Wow, if I was a different race I would have gone up +20 in this "formula".

I really hope its not accurate.

83.1, yet I still wet myself everytime I get a thin envelope. This is definitely a bad formula, I wonder how made it up. Doesnt even take into account in-state advantages.
 
Do you think you get extra points for being a member of SDN before you even began college? Just wondering.
On a totally side note-I went to the beach today and soaked up killer rays. Skin cancer? Guess I'll find out about that later. Unfortunately, I'm not a minority. Although a lot of my heritage is.

My favorite part of this formula is the age thing. According to this, I'm screwed since I'm over 30.

Don't worry, he just used the Simplified Undergraduate Equation instead of the more complicated Generalized Equation for Non-Traditional Applicants:

(GPA-2) * (MCAT) * [1+(# hrs worked per week during undergrad/40)] * [1+(age-26)/26] * (1+ # of part-time jobs held while finishing prereqs for med school) * (1 + # of useful languages spoken)= index score

your index score determines what range of schools you will get in

index = 200+ ....... a top ten medical school
index = 150+ ....... a top twenty medical school
index = 100+ ....... a top thirty medical school
index = 50+ ....... a US medical school

Man, you guys are all nuts. This formula is totally real and will guarantee you acceptance depending on the index you fall into.

(GPA-2) * (MCAT) * (1.375) = index score. Divide score by 1.25 if you are white

your index score determines what range of schools you will get in


index = 70+ ....... a top ten medical school
index = 65+ ....... a top twenty medical school
index = 60+ ....... a top thirty medical school
index = 55+ ....... a US medical school
 
you forgot to add, "divide by 1.5 if you are asian." 😛

Damn, I plugged my numers in and found out I shouldn't have even been accepted to my undergrad university.

come on... what about state of residence?????????

It's actually somewhat accurate for me though, a score of 62 puts me just about where I think i'll get accepted... just in reach of a school like U of C...
