I'm nearing the end of my 5th semester as an undergrad and am pretty much finished all my pre-req courses. I'm in Ochem I now and I'll be honest, I'm not fairing so well in it. The class is a pain in the you know what. With that said, my intention is to take it again in the summer. I already retook gen. chem II (originally got a D, but then got an A)...I really want to keep my med school hopes alive. Will having two retakes hurt my chances? Thanks

You're still in the game.

I practically retook my freshman year and have multiple offers. You will be fine.

Gotta love PSU- my undergrad as well. If you are not earning a good grade in ochem, sure go ahead and drop it. But beware of summer ochem at psu -- they cram the class into what, 6 or 8 weeks? I can't remember. And if you think digesting the material in a normal semester is hard... just wait until you have only half the time. I'd retake in the spring -- pick Falzone (he's great).

Also, if I were you (because you are now a Junior, and nearing the med school applications process -- I'd stop dropping classes) It's too late in the game.. freshmen year would be alright, but not now. G'luck with all those 400 levels! (Also, take psu biochem -- it'll be worth it in the admissions cycles).

I loved summer o-chem!!! For me it was better to learn the material in a short amount of time. I tend to get burnt out over an entire semester. Also, I have 5 retakes to boost my gpa so I hope two will be ok!

Hey! I am up at Penn State right now, so if you need any help you can just give me a call and we can talk about stuff. PM me if you want my phone number. I live in South Halls, so Redifer Commons might be best. I am a bit busy with HPA 301W, ENGL 202C, and BIOL 472 at the moment, but sometime this weekend a good study break might be in order.

As far as retaking courses, not a problem. I have retaken a few courses and I am in. ^.^ Just keep working hard!

EDIT: I agree with the biochem. BMB 401 and 402, though, not 400 (I heard terrible things about that class). It looks good on your application, and it provides you with a good basis for some things you might see on the MCAT (one or two things). They're tough but really interesting! Good luck!

Thanks for the advice! Glad to see fellow penn staters on here. As for dropping the course, that's unfortunately out of the question since the drop deadline is long past. As for taking it in the spring, Maslak is the only professor teaching it 👎 . I think my best bet is to just take it over again in the summer at either a branch campus (Abington is close to my home in the summer) or a community college. I'll also most likely take OchemII in the second summer session just to get it out of the way. I'm a kinesiology major, so the biochem's and whatnot aren't required; however, I already had the intentions of taking it my senior year. Depending on how the rest of the year ends up, I think I'm going to end up staying a 5th year just to increase my chances, extracurriculars, and so forth.

MASLAK!!!

Question: OP, have you ever been to Chem Tutoring? I heard they got some great tutors working on Thursday nights 😉

Comment: BMB 402 is raw. I would suggest some molecular biology classes (BMB 251, 252), even BMB 400 before 402.

I went to the Chem tutoring quite a bit before. It certainly helps, but I procrastinated too much and put myself in a bad situation. There's nobody to blame but myself for that.
