What is the best way to make yourself competitive for the top academic obgyn positions after residency (especially when not coming from either a top med school or residency program)? What factors do employers at top research institutions scrutinize the most? And finally, what are ways to expand one’s network to develop connections that will help during the employment process.

I haven’t found too much employment advice, so any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Do you mean getting a job as a general OB GYN or a sub specialist?

Those are 2 different things. Typically, with the clinical volume, most places are looking to add a generalist to help with coverage and increase volume.

The OB GYN sub specialty divisions are smaller and getting hired is more difficult.

This is where personal connections, phone calls made on your behalf, research background, personal characteristics etc all play a role.

A fair amount of academic jobs are already filled by the time they officially post them (that is usually a legal/ health system requirement so they can say they made a good faith effort).
