How are scholarships determined in medical school?
Who "qualifies" the most -that is - best grades, financial need, race, etc.?

I know that scholarships vary from school to school, but what can we do to best prep ourselves to receive scholarships? Apply early?

Thanks ahead of time.

I think some schools give Early Decision applicants preference when giving out scholarships. I hope UAB is in that group!!!

hmmm...that'd be nice - although I can't unsubmit my AMCAS to apply edp at SUNY like I want to...

Some schools selects people to apply for their scholarship. I know Case, Wash U, Pitt, Emory invite people to for their scholarship. Other schools just select students for scholarship without an application or invitation. Schools like Michigan and Vandy do this.

That makes little sense whatsoever if you are referring to merit scholarships. The whole point of merit scholarships is to attract you from OTHER med schools. If you apply EDP to a school, then they know you will go there 100% and nowhere else if accepted. So I doubt EDP applicants are more likely, and I would argue they are in fact less likely to receive a merit scholarship.

Minority scholarships and financial aid scholarships are independent of any of these factors however, Im just talking about merit scholarships.

I had two just fall in my lap...in one case, I was invited back for an interview. In the other, I received a letter stating that I would receive a big chunk of cash.

Ahhh, those are the best kind of letters, aren't they?

Scholarships are limited so don't expect to get one but if you do be happy 🙂 . Most students receive scholarships from out of state schools that are usually private. This is there way of enticing you to come to their school or sometimes to level off the difference in tuition for out of staters as compared to in staters. Other scholarships are given to only the most kick a** applicants..."Somekevinguy" could tell you more about this. And then some scholarships are awarded to minority students (black, puerto rican mainland, alaska, native american), disadvantaged (if you classified yourself as disadvantaged in the AMCAS app), financially in need (parents must make less than 46K).

I agree that this would make sense, but I know of several edp people accepted to my state school who recieved nice scholarships, and many people with similar stats who applied in the regular pool and didn't get such scholarships. Some of these regular application students were also holding spots at ranked private schools and they had to know this.

But it might be different at other schools. I think at a lot of schools a committee that has little to do with admissions awards scholarships, and there might be less of the "let's give him some money so he doesn't go to school X" going on.

If you really want money you must buy the book by Matthew Lesko on government grants. His commercials sold me!! If you don't know who he is, he is the guy in the questionmark suit who runs around yelling: Free! He really changed my life. 👍 😀
