I'm in an interesting little conundrum.

I am fortunate. I have a 260 on Step 1 and a first-author publication in a rads-related journal. I think I can get into this specialty if I apply to enough programs.

I am not so fortunate. I'm in a nonfamous school and will not be able to get AOA. I can't go to a top program.

My choice of programs is thus 'bracketed'. I have a floor and a ceiling on where I can go (assuming I don't screw up bigtime and wind up unmatched, which is certainly possible). How high up the academic 'food chain' can I go, and what would I have to do to get there?

what makes you think you can't get AOA? Are you a 3rd or 4th year? LORs are pretty important for competitive programs, and a 260 isn't too shabby. Apply to top programs, you may be surprised.

It's late enough in 3rd year that I can tell, based on # of classes taken and not honored, basically.

Thanks for the hint about LOR. Do you think it would pay to do a year of research at a place that's just out of reach?

My fear is that I'll waste time interviewing at places I have no chance at but which have mistakenly chosen to look at me due to my board score! (But then of course I get a low pre-rank...)

Thanks...

null null. you'll match at a top program. don't sweat. seriously, aoa is overrated. your step 1 puts you way ahead of the running.

Impressive... What makes you think you can't match at Mallincrockt?

What is the title of the article or what magazine is this article?

Got my first rejection already. 🙁 Anybody know of automatic cutoff's for Radiology programs? I have a 249/99 Step 1, from a solid school, 3 honors, no AOA. Name on 4 radiology clinical research papers, but not first author. What are my chances for radiology?

That's shocking! 🙁 Care to share what school?

no AOA probably hurt you. There's a ton of snobby programs out there.

Sorry to hear. From your stats, you're a superb applicant and will match well. I can't believe they rejected you. Their loss.

I was in a similar situation to you a year ago. What I realized was that many university programs have a regional bias. This is especially true of the CA and NY schools. If a regional connection is not readily apparent in your application, you are not considered as strongly. I think if you apply to enough places, you will ultimately get enough interviews to match. One other tactic is to SELECTIVELY write to certain program directors after you have been rejected to see if you can secure an interview spot. Or have someone from your school call the program director. This should only be done very selectively though. Good luck with the process.

I got the UPenn rejection toady too! I got a 261 step1, all clinical honors, AOA, from a decent school. They recently downloaded my picture though... must have been my hideous mug that turned 'em off.
Good Luck everybody!

i got a UPenn rejection like 2 weeks ago. I wonder if they're early match 🙂

I agree that AOA is overrated. There was 8 people in last years class at my medical school that matched rads, and not a single one of them was AOA.

I'd sum it up as:

You don't need AOA to get a radiology spot.

You do need AOA to get a good radiology spot. (Unless you go to Harvard, etc.)

Look at the ERAS numbers...the last year I saw there were something like 270 AOA applicants and 900 radiology positions. There's no way they can fill all those spots with AOAers.

But they can fill a third. My guess would be, if you're not AOA and not from a name school, you should apply to all programs in your region except those affiliated with a top school such as Harvard, Yale, Hopkins, etc.

that sucks. so much for those of us who might not get 240 + on step 1

geez

are you guys all US grads??
how are the chances of IMG's with the same scores?
Do IMG's need to do something to prove they r better than US grads, like extra research or something??
Generally how does Radiology look at IMG's?
