Maybe LizzyM will reply to this and shoot me down, but how many people really feel May 15 is a hard-and-fast deadline? Hear me out. On May 15, you're not required to e-mail your chosen school and tell them you've withdrawn from everywhere else and are definitely going there. Right?

So, if that's the case, it's not like schools are going to check the AMCAS site for each of their accepted applicants and kick everyone out who is still holding multiple acceptances. I mean, can they even see that you've withdrawn from a place that quickly? I doubt it's updated second-to-second because I'm sure schools have to go into AMCAS themselves and update your status before it shows up. And on Monday, May 17, when every school gets a flood of updates, I'm sure they get behind by a day or two.

So, I say screw 'em! Take your time and wait until May 18 to notify! Or be a rebel and wait until May 19! Ha! Fie on them!

You are going to have to make a decision at some point. What's the extra two days going to get you (other than risk). Also some of is are waiting on pins and needles for May 15 to try to get off a waitlist

May 15 is not a hard and fast deadline. AMCAS rules provide for some leeway, provided you communicate with the schools whose acceptances you are holding that you have XXXX reason for doing so. Typically this occurs when one is awaiting financial aid information, or possibly pending campus assignment. Schools will be aware that you are holding another acceptance, so it is best to communicate that you are doing so. Do you want them to have an excuse to dump you? Did you not sign (electronically) an agreement to comply with AMCAS instructions?

And don't you want your deposit money returned (if applicable)?

The only people you'll be "sticking it to" are the ones who are agonizing over a spot. Bad form. We all can relate to being tired of "The Man" at this point but that small act of rebellion does more bad than good. Not worth it.

Do we have to email a school by May 15 and tell them that they're our #1 choice and that we'll be matriculating there? How exactly does this process work?

No you just have to tell the other schools you're withdrawing. When your #1 doesn't hear from you they'll assume you picked them.
