When schools say we have to let them know by may 15th, do letters have to be postmarked by then, or do they have to be received by then?

I think they have to receive the letters BY May 15th 'coz some schools start dropping multiple acceptance people on May 16th .... (e.g. UVa)

I've withdrawn from 3 schools via e-mail. I haven't had any problems yet. Although some schools suck at checking their e-mails... so send a letter via snail-mail for those schools.
