It seems that SDN is running pretty slow these days. I believe it is due to the many "lurkers" who check out the threads but don't post any advice. They slow the sytem down and it takes forever to view posts, post replies, etc. I think that the system should be set up so that "lurkers" can' t view posts unless they are registered and they have to post with a certain frequency so they just don't register to view posts. What do y'all think?

Death to lurkers, you're like parasites feeding off the SDN bandwidth!!!!!!!😡 😡 😡 😡

Right now like 100 people have viewed this and no replies...parasites man. +pissed+

well... just because no one has responded does not mean they're lurkers. this is my second view of the post, and i did not respond the first time. also, it's a pain to post now b/c it's soooo slow.

i'm not sure what the deal is. perhaps sdn needs more money to be able to purchase equipment to deal with the load?

i don't think it's a great idea to require people to register and post. that will just lead to more people posting & slowing the system down or unnecessary post padding.

well maybe if the present users donate to SDN, then they could buy or expand the server, how'bout that?

umm...........yeah

there's an idea 🙄 🙄

How many people lurked first with maybe an occasional post before posting more frequently? A lot of us I am sure. Don't take that away from them. Besides, this site is to help others. People don't need to post to benefit, just reading often helps them.

Also, many of us so-called "lurkers" who don't post many replies yet aren't in the application cycle yet. Many of us are just starting this whole process, so what would be the point of adding completely unknowledgable replies to all the "Where are you going?", "Info about such and such school", "What were you MCAT scores", etc threads?? I don't mind a register before you can reply thing, but to have to have a certain frequency of posts would be completely unrealistic for many of us.

I agree Bonds & Skaterbabe. I lurked for about a year with very infrequent posting. The threads I chose to read were very insightful and helped me during my time as a post-bacc pre-med. I post frequently now because I have insight to offer, whereas before I didn't.

I agree with the idea that lurkers should at least have to register before viewing the threads. Maybe then at least they will be more inclined to contribute and ultimately to become part of the community. 🙂

okay first thing first, how about u edit the quote? 😉

why is donating lame? the only way they keep up the website is through advertisements and donations, i have donated before as many people have too, are u saying u aren't going to donate? 😛

SDN should have the server distribute it's clock cycles more to the users with the most seniority , posts, or donations. Any of these would give the people who actively contribute the most (either intellectually or financially) the best level of service.

It wouldn't be hard to integrate this technology into their current repertoire either. The server already checks the username when doing a search so you can't search more frequently than every 15 seconds. They'd just need to distribute outbound packets in greater proportion to users with higher seniority.

hey people - just buy an SDN T-shirt. They really are nice, and you can advertise for your favorite site. Now if only I could find that link.

HEY - if anybody who maintains this site it watching - put an add for SDN T-shirts somewhere obvious. Perhaps a whole section on supporting SDN is warranted.

then theres the possibility that forcing people to post within a certain frequency will really result in junk posting just to maintain that requirment, which would DEF. overload the servers moreso then just "lurkers"

I just bought some SDN scrubs tonight. It was about time I bought some. SDN has given me tons of valuable information over the year that I've been a member. At $14.95, the srubs are pretty reasonably priced too. I urge others to support SDN if you can. After all, unlike secondary applications fees, at least here you're guaranteed something positive from this transaction, i.e. scrubs.🙂

Here's something that's helped the pages to load faster:

1) Go to your SDN CP and click on "Edit Options"

2) Near the bottom, you can choose how many days of posts you want to show up in your viewer (I choose something low like 5 days).

3) Also, you can choose how many posts appear on each page of a thread (I choose 10).

4) Submit/save your changes. Since I've done that, much faster!

While we're discussing technical stuff, does anybody still have their subscribed threads saved (I mean saved under the CP page, and NOT as favorites/bookmarks in Explorer/Netscape)? Since the new server went up in Jan, all of mine are gone, and the only way for me to see them is to do a search, or if it's bumped up. Even when I choose the time frame "from the beginning"-- nada. Anyone else notice the same? Thanks.
