actualy, i interviewed monday. when i got onto the shuttle in rochester, the driver said to us all "welcome to the deep freeze". and then jane commented on how brave we all were to interview on their coldest day yet.

but you've got to love the subway system.

edit. i am not from SD. oh well. i'm still ready.

I've read through a few of the large Mayo threads here on SDN but still have a few questions.

What is the GPA/ MCAT "cutoff" for that first batch of primary applications? Secondaries?

Okay, so it seems that Mayo has no "formula" for acceptance. There are some students with 4.0's and some with 3.5's. All have MCAT scores above 30. Some of the students do undergrad research, some don't.

All the students do seem to be involved in diverse activites that THEY find meaningful/interesting.

Competitive GPA, above par MCAT score, personally enriching EC's aside, is the "key" to Mayo using your pre-med time to evolve into a better person?

There are actually people that have been accepted with less than 30 on the MCAT. Mayo seems to want people that are really interested in patient care. They also seem to pre-screen for niceness (I have yet to meet a mean Mayo student or interviewee). Other than that they seem to want to make a diverse group. I don't know though, wish I did...

That's funny. You know, it could work! The student body is extremely homogeneous with respect to niceness. Maybe some someone who's mean can bring a valuable new perspective and can toughen-up the other students, preparing them for the "real" world of snotty medical students. :laugh:
 
Congratulations! That's amazing. What do you think the odds are that you'll take it? Are you waiting on any other schools? I hope you go out and celebrate either way.

Still waiting to hear from the non-rollers. Pretty unlikely anything could convince me to turn it down.

Mayo is one of the few schools I believe is truthful in the assertion that they review each applicant thoroughly and weigh all factors, not just the stats.

That's amazing!!! Good to hear a fellow SDNer got the call. If I were you I wouldn't turn it down for anything (unless another school offers full tuition and a puppy).

By the way... I got into Mayo with Full Tuition and a Hamster.... impossible to turn down!

...now i am sitting here in limbo, still no hold email, still no call from jane...

i wonder if she only calls early in the morning but then the hold emails go out later? or maybe she can call whenever? oh the speculation - to think I wasnt gonna let myself check mayo today... yeah right

anyhow, seriously, way to go, you people who are in, we are all envious!👍

Hi Mike,

You never know when they will call. They called me on a Wednesday at 6PM. There is just no formula... so the best you can do is not to speculate. Did NovemberWhiskey interview before or after you??? Did she get the rank email before or after? Maybe the answer to those questions could help you. Anyway.... I am off to play with my free hamster... 😉

edit: from my snooping, I have learned that she interviewed dec 11 (i interviewed first day in jan) but got ranked emaila week after I, so... gahhhh!

anyhow the three are (ersa, shadow, november)

I don't know why but the idea of a free hamster makes me laugh. The only thing funnier would be a free ferret...or maybe a spider monkey.

novemberwhiskey congrats!! that is amazing news. are you from MN?

when i interviewed on monday, jane said there were 13 regular MD spots left. i'm wondering if it is now 12?

also, mike, its exciting to hear you were ranked within a week. jane told us all about 3 weeks for ranking

This morning! I was kind of stunned because I wasn't expecting it at all, so I went through today's classes in a cloudy stupor😛 I interviewed way back right in the beginning of January.
 
oh well i suppose i may have been passed over this time... guess they are waiting to send out the hold emails... 🙁

I was there jan 8 - (monday after new years) were you in my group?

Wow, yeah! I guess we were in the same group (I interviewed that day as well).

I wouldn't be so sure about "hold emails" yet. I think people have been getting scattered calls today and yesterday, so this might continue over later today and/or tomorrow.

I think I remember you... I recall there being another person from CA (San Diego in particular). It must have been you!

Question: Did the packet received at the MD interviews include any detailed information about selectives? Our information only had the one-sheet calendar of the first two years. I know that it is left largely to the student, but I vaguely recall mention of there being a few more formal options as well. The MD curriculum overview comprised about 15 minutes in the middle of seven interviews (5/45, 2/20), so I was already pretty saturated at that point. Any clarifications are greatly appreciated.

well, since no one else is stepping up, I can tell you what I remember... basically they didnt make a big point about them to us either so, this aint much

there are lists of stuff you can do, but there is also some mandatory amount of 'vacation time' that must be done during the year, so you can use that during any one of the selectives... also they are very open to you finding a shoadowing opportunity or something during the two weeks

my impression - they just want you to take a break from studying (what a swell idea) and i think a lot of stuff will fly as a 'selective'

this re-itterates what you said, it is mostly to student but there are some things set up

thus this is a useless post

oh well, guess i need something to do while i sit here without a call or a hold email... in limbo 🙁

do you get to know your rank? i know everyone gets this mail, do you get it every month? does it ever tell you where on the ran you are?

Nope. I wish it did. I have no idea where I am...Undesirable county in a little town called Patheticville.
 
no you never get to know your rank, and as far as i am aware, they only send you the ranked email once
 
As far as I can tell, you get the rank email once and from there it is a waiting game. You never know your rank.

If (after getting your rank email) you receive a hold email it means that your rank is not at the tippee-top of their list and they are not giving you an acceptance right away (still can get one later in the process or get on the waitlist).

If (after getting your rank email) you do not receive a hold email, you must wait to see if you either get a phone call (acceptance yea!) or a hold email (meaning you must have been high on the rank list, but not quite high enough to get in right away - same as hold email above).

so does it basically mean if we get one of these emails were not getting in? as you can tell i just got one
 
no no no...
rank = neutral news (it means they went over your app and the next time they decide to let ppl in or not, you will be stepping up to the plate)

everybody gets one and only one rank email (and it often comes friday, the day after they have the weekly thursday ranking meeting)

thus it is neither good nor bad, just a part of the mayo application dance
