And to build upon Mike's post. After getting the rank email (which everyone gets and is just standard procedure) is when you wait for the hold email or phone call acceptance. If you get the call, your all set and going to Mayo. If you get the hold email do not give up hope. It means that Mayo did not want to accept you immediately, but you still have plenty of opportunity to get in. While you wait for this opportunity you will be in the dark and the good news following the hold email can come at any moment, possibly late in the spring.
 
hi there,

lots of questions

1) jane told us they rank you and your score goes up on the powerpoint. what is this rank score based on? EC's? GPA? mostly interviews? anyone have the slightest guess? phone interview? i'm quite confused.

2) do both interviewers present you SEPARATELY? or do they speak privatley to one another first, and present you as a team?

3) my interview experience at Mayo was EXTREMELY pleasant and rather informal. i can't imagine too many people having a negative experience, or not performing their best, given how comfortable the situation was. if everyone has a great interview, how do they distinguish between candidates?

4) after you are ranked, is there no other influence in your acceptance, except that score? so when it comes time to give phone calls, is jane simply calling those with ranked scores that are far above those of the rest of the newly ranked/hold pool?

BananaBoat... You are asking some difficult questions and I'm fairly sure that most answers to your questions will be speculative.

My speculative answers to your questions:

1) I think the rank is based on everything. Possibly the phone interview is the least important, if considered at all. Definitely everything else about your application/interview will be considered.

2) No clue about this one....maybe some one will know, but the details of the meetings are fairly unknown. I do know that both interviewers must be present at the meeting. They will postpone discussion of your application until the two interviewers are present at the meeting.

3) Who knows? If you feel your interviews went well, then be happy and feel confident. But there is no way to know if they liked you more or less than other candidates. I'm sure there are certain things (don't know what exactly maybe leadership, etc) that they are looking for in the interview so even if you have a comfortable conversation they may have a better/worse feeling about you as a Mayo candidate. Since you can't read their minds, I say don't stress about it.

4) After you are ranked, that is that. I don't know if they like letters of intent or not. But if not, then your job is done. How they choose their acceptances is really not known.


Don't know if that helped at all...but at least we get Mayo back up on the front page. 😉

hey xibye, thanks for taking the time to try to answer my questions. 🙂

i'm glad to know i'm not the only one who feels out of the loop when it comes to mayo and its admissions process.
 
Congrats to those who have gotten acceptances so far!

Some things I do know about the mysterious admissions process...
After you interview, your interviewers each rank you on a scale of 1-5 and present you seperately to the committee (both must be present or your file will wait until the next meeting.) This committee meets once a week (at least right now.) Then the committee decides on a rank for you based on the info from the interviewers as well as anything else in your file (the phone interview isn't really counted at this point.) That is all that committee does.

then it goes on from there, Dean Barrier and possibly others will look at your file & your rank and decide whether to admit you immediately or hold for later. This has a lot to do with what you're rank is (ex/ a 4.8 might get in automatically) but it also has to do with other factors such as creating a diverse class, etc (so someone with a 4.2 might get in over a 4.4 after this consideration.) As far as letters of intent, i'm not sure but it couldn't hurt. I know they put everything (thank you notes, etc) into your file. i did send an "update" letter of major things I had done since submitting my application and I did get accepted 2-3 weeks later (could have been a complete coincidence though.)

Once they have decided you're in, you get the call (i don't know how scholarship $$ is decided on, some scholarships have specific requirements, others don't.) If you don't get in right away after that first review, you get the "hold" email and you wait awhile. It's not the same as the "waitlist" (that isn't made until all of the acceptances have gone out) but it's kind of similar.

informal poll of people still reading this thread: should I call Jane to ask what the heck is goin' on (no phone call, but no hold email either)?

reasons i want to call:
1 - i know someone from my day got in, so i assume they got to me...
2 - dammit i just want to know...

reasons i should not call:
1 - if i am in or out, a call wont change it... it might just be annoying

neutral facts about the case:
1 - my friend also interviewed there and was ranked before the last batch of acceptances... but has received no word, just like me
2 - the only people who posted getting in last week were top ten people... maybe they were the only ones called?

I am graciously awaiting your thoughts on this matter, and I will/wont call in a couple hours (after lunch, and I am on the west coast)

Hi Mike,

I would only call if you have not already called about the same situation. If you called already a while back asking about what is going on, I would not call and I would just wait and see. Even though they are VERY helpful, I have no doubt that they value PATIENCE. Just wait until the next batch of acceptances... if nothing happens, no hold and no phone call... then call to talk about the situation.
 
top ten people = people who get the full ride (they give full scholarship to the top ten ranked applicants, 50% to everyone else) - I believe this ranking is based on your committee rank score)

so if you got a full scholarship already, that means they already know you are top ten! so congrats to the people that got it, it is amazing...

and yes they should just let me in...

and shadow i think you might be right, I did call about this once, it was weeks ago, but i dont think I should bother Jane again... anyone else out there in the same situation? there must have been other people up for acceptance... did anyone get a hold? i doubt it as i assume someone would have posted it...

What's Jane gonna do? Go to the Dean and say, "that Mike kid is a pain in the tookus and is stirring up the rabble on SDN. I think we should yank this acceptance we were gonna give him next Tuesday afte we shovel of from under all this snow."

NAH! Jane sounds like a very nice lady. I am sure this happens every year at MAyo.

You can do what I do and wait until you are sure she's gone home for the day and leave a very nice voicemail message. That way she has to call you back!

Mike, it sounds like you and I are in the same boat. I interviewed on the same day as you, and I also received the rank e-mail on the 18th, but I have yet to receive a phone call or a hold e-mail. I fixed my hold date. I have actually been on hold for a month longer than posted. I have pretty much lost hope. My Mayo eternal hold and my Brown eternal hold have me really bummed out. Oh well...Happy V-day.

hahahha i feel very stupid being the only one with 'interviewed' status on our little list. thats what happens when you submit your primary oct 16th. 😉
i'm still proud to have received an invite the next day after my phone interview. i am also happy i got a chance to visit mayo, as a canadian (i think most ppl on my interview day were from MN, WI, AZ).

i was pretty blown away with the resources (anatomy lab, stimulation centre, joint degrees) ... but what really impressed me was the truly supportive atmosphere the faculty/students have created.

and yes, i am without a doubt, still reppin' Mayo4Life :luck:
 
i wouldnt worry about not getting the rank email yet, i have a feeling that you will get ranked by the next meeting anyhow, which means you will be up for acceptance at the same time as a number of us still waiting to hear...

nutmeg - good to hear from you, and good to hear you are in the same boat as I... I think that is good news and here is a far-too-long explanation of why:

i was worried because I thought melissa was put on hold 1/22, which was the monday after people found about getting in last month... so I assumed when i got no phone call that they hadnt written out the hold email list yet and that it wouldnt be arriving... but, thx to melissas correction above, I now know she got the email on friday (a day or so after the adcom met) in december... so, in conclusion, had we been held, I am pretty sure they would have told us by now - thus I can only assume that they have not gotten to us, and that Pyrois was very lucky/an extremely good applicant (probably both) so he was reviewed from our day, and we werent...

so with all that thought out, I will not be calling, I am gonna take shadows advice and just wait till the next adcom meeting... (but if anyone else wants to call, please feel free!)

and melissa - dont you hate it when people talk about you in 3rd person when they know you are going to read it? weird...

Haha, yeah. I used to play a LOT when it came out, but lately been real busy. In game name? Mine is Zepath Featherlight (dragonrealms reference anybody?).

Mayo people should start a guild.

We'll have barely enough members to play an actual game.

And we'll be ranked like 109894032 because we're always studying😛

Don't worry too much about it. If you haven't heard any word other than rank or hold, you definitely are still in the running.

I remember having a very similar feeling a while back with UCSD. I kept my phone hugged close to me all day January 23rd because they said they'd call me that day. One of my friends (who lives in SD) called me from his 858 number and I freaked out.

Time went on, until almost 4 and I didn't hear anything. Finally I broke down and called the office. It turned out that my file hadn't gone through committee yet.

So no news, is actually pretty good news with Mayo. If you haven't received a hold e-mail they probably haven't even had a chance to look at your file in detail, and if you have received a hold e-mail, it really does probably mean just that. On hold to be reviewed again later.

It's fine 🙂 It may even be helpful for people to see that factors other than interview date may influence when you are reviewed. Perhaps one or more of your interviewers could not attend, or maybe they were just n a hurry to put me on hold...

I interviewed in Late January and recently received a rank email... how long did you wait between your rank email and your hold email? Thanks guys and good luck!
 
Look at the dates on the previous posts. Usually the Rank and Hold email are sent the same day. But mistery surrounds when you only get a rank email, and a few days pass without your hold or call...

For me the rank email was sent and then a week later the hold email was sent. rankings are done at one meeting and appointments at another from what i understand
