Ok... so this is just a lame excuse to bump the thread...

If you were accepted to Mayo, what would be the reasons for you to turn down the acceptance?

Temporary insanity or some generous combination of:

1. can't stand the location (although I think the phone-interview pre-screened for your emotional capacity to handle the place)

2. don't care about the money (not really a big issue, but makes the offer slightly less lucrative)

3. accepted into a school with arguably greater prestige (not rank, mind you, as Mayo is easily in the top 10 for prestige) such as Harvard, UCSF... not sure what others.

4. care about whether your future non-mid-west patients will recognize your school name (surprisingly low recognition rates in CA amongst non-health professionals).

5. concerned about how the small class size will affect your social life.

6. don't necessarily want to simply practice medicine or teach once you get out (I would argue that Harvard or Yale would offer more political connections if you wanted to go that route).

Most likely, Mayo offers the absolute best clinical training in the world (including all the current top 10 schools). Unfortunately many people, including residency directors, aren't aware of this, or refuse to believe it. If you want to match into UCSF or Harvard (which mayo clinic folks definitely do on occasion) for a highly competitive residency, be prepared to compete against other folks from UCSF and Harvard who the residency directors at UCSF and Harvard may regard as "more prestigious" than you.

Then again, it seems most Mayo students match back into Mayo Clinic for residency, which is great as Mayo Clinic's residency programs are top notch. But it also means you may be stuck in Rochester or one of the satellite clinics for 8 years to life.

Mayo is not the best hospital in the US. John's Hopkins is and has been for a long time. Mayo is not even in the top 20 as far as reputation goes. So, I am not sure where you are getting your info.

Guys,

Don't drag the Mayo v Hopkins v Harvard debate from that other thread over here.

This thread is for folks who won't mind freezing their nips of in Rochester for the chance to be one of the 40.

That is all. Resume debate!👍

Mayo is not the best hospital in the US.

When US News wants to give tribute to one of the oldest institutions in the US, they select Hopkins.

When Presidents are about to die, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayo_clinic#Notable_visitors) they go to Mayo.

If you were going to die, where would you go?

That's all I'm going to say about that😛

So, I am not sure where you are getting your info.

Pretty much speculation, but I can always call up the President's medical advisors, or maybe King Hussein of Jordan, a couple Sheikh's, Hemingway, the creator of Slackware Linux, or Van Halen amongst many others for backup.

So Mayo killed JFK and George Harrison?

So Mayo killed JFK and George Harrison?

No, Mayo saved JFK from colitis in 1934 after Yale failed to fix him up.

When Kennedy was shot in 1963, there wasn't enough time to fly him to Mayo. Had there been, he may have survived.

As for George Harrison, Mayo fixed up his throat cancer in 1996 (http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?sec=health&res=9401E2D8153FF93AA15755C0A96E958260) but it returned 5 years later and he died in Los Angeles, not Mayo Clinic.

In any case, there's a little post-hoc fallacy in the argument of "hospitals killing patients." People go to hospitals when they are already in bad shape. One could argue that neurosurgery is a useless profession because of the relatively high rate of death during, or soon after surgery, but it's a biased demographic.

AHEM! Get your facts straight.... not only do your Presidents escape to Mayo when they are deathly ill... but the Mayo Clinic is second only to Hopkins, and World renowned... just ask King Hussein, or the surviving members of the Beatles.

OMG NO MORE HARVARD V JOHNS HOPKINS V MAYO THREAD AHHH DO NOT CORRUPT THIS THREAD! 😡

This thread is the bright beacon of hope for all SDNers aspiring to attend Mayo not for an argument!

I know the Mayo Clinic is second only to Hopkins. But, the medical school is not in the top 20 when it comes to reputation. I have never disputed the reputation of the Clinic and it would be foolish to do so.

OMG NO MORE HARVARD V JOHNS HOPKINS V MAYO THREAD AHHH DO NOT CORRUPT THIS THREAD! 😡

Relax. We're just doing some cleanup on a few folks who would dare descend upon Mayo thread with ill intent.

It's actually amusing. The post "Bananas" made above was his second post, (his first being the one everyone must make in the new user welcome area), which means one of two things.

1. He created an account specifically to make a snide remark about Mayo

2. He has a regular account he uses, but made another one because he doesn't want his snide remark about Mayo to be associated with his internet "identity."

😛

But, the medical school is not in the top 20 when it comes to reputation.

If you're using US News as a benchmark, they don't rank by reputation, they rank primarily (60%) by accepted undergrad GPA/MCAT scores as well as research funding. (http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/grad/rankings/about/07med_meth.php)

In fact, places like WashU have elevated rankings simply because they accept mostly students with very high MCAT/undergrad GPA's. Unfortunately these stellar testtakers somehow lose their edge while at WashU, as Mayo trumped them all last year with the highest average USMLE scores in the nation. Not bad for kids who entered with an average MCAT of 32.

And that's one of the disadvantage of going to Mayo for medical school. There are a lot of people out there who just don't know any better and blindly follow where US News points.

As a result, you will inevitably get looked down upon by folks who have never visited Mayo Medical School.

Mayo is not even in the top 20 as far as reputation goes.

Let's get one thing straight. USNEWS rankings change every year. An institution's reputation does not. I doesn't matter if Hopkins is #2 this year and #5 next year, its still has the reputation of being a top medical institution. The same goes for Mayo. Mayo as you know is the #2 hospital in the nation and one of the top institutions in the world. SO to believe that its reputation is so low is laughable. And there is no way that an institution at the top would have a medical school at the bottom. Look at the breakdown of the rankings, NIH funding and acceptance rate does not equal reputation, it equals rank in the USNEWS. Where are you getting YOUR info? A proper and well thought out comment would have read "Last year, Mayo medical school wasn't even in the top 20 schools of the USNEWS research rankings." Thanks and good evening 👍

On a side note, knowing how passionate this thread is about Mayo, I presume that you are just trying to stir up drama. Very juvenile 😛

Does anyone know what happens during selectives? I have heard shadowing, research, and clinical skills development. Do you actually have enough time to do research (2 weeks at a time)?

I was told that a lot of students do research over the summer and use a selective to add variable amounts of time depending on their needs. I doubt any of the students try to pull off a substantial research project during a single 2 week selective.

I don't understand what you mean. Use the 2 weeks to follow up on some data? The first summer looks to be only 4 weeks, so that's not exactly a lot of time to get a project worked on, either. This is, of course, ignoring the 3 month block of protected research time during 3rd year.

How about the leadership blocks? There is a block for the first 3 weeks are during December. In fact, there is a period of 7 weeks (!) in the first year outside of the classroom. Selectives (2 weeks), Leadership (6 weeks), and Winter Selectvies (2 weeks). (The winter selectives conincides with the holidays.) Thanks!

Well, it depends on what you're working on. 6 weeks full time can easily acquire sufficient data to write a paper on if you're talking about clinical research.

Planning the project and writing it up can be done part time outside of "class."

So the Adcom met today to rank the last few applicants. Do you think they made decisions for the remaining three spots as well. I recall Jane telling me that the class would probably be filled by tomorrow, but I may have been dreaming. It seems like they had the ranking meeting and acceptance meeting on the same day last week (Thursday), so I'm thinking they will continue that trend.

Anyone have any insight?

That sucks. My hopes have fallen so low I could shout, "why don't you like me!?!" and it woud take 1000 years for my voice to reach them. This is going to be a bad month.🙁

MAYO! MELISSA IS WAITING!! LET HER IN!

guys

i have no official information but i think its a good time to give up on mayo, no need to feel bad, you guys had an interview, made it very far in a school that accepts few..

I think you're wrong ned. I wasn't the last interview and I've yet to be ranked, meaning they are still looking at applications for the first 34.

Secondly, I think they took either 12 or 14 off the waitlist last year. Around March 15th they form an alternate list of something like 60 people. So if 12 out of 60 got accpeted off that list last year, that's a higher percentage than the 34 that got accepted from the original 250 interviews.

Hold on to the hope!

Oh and bananas, to answer your question about research.

Most research isn't done during the selectives. That's usually a time for shadowing, volunteering, or doing things like medical trips to latin america or africa.

A lot of the research is done during the research block in the 3rd year. Something like ~80% of Mayo students publish from that research so it should help you out for residency applications 🙂

im a personal fan of thinking the worst and accepting defeat, and then magically when any good news comes im overwhelmed, its funner that way!!!! its like a surprise birthday party

I think Kojuk's info is probably accurate. I just got my rank email today so I'm thinking everyone's probably ranked. I'd expect the last 3 phone calls to be made shortly.

Good luck everyone!!

silly mayo applicant!😀

If there's 3 calls to be made today and 12 to be taken off the waitlist that leaves 15 spots. We were planning on applying for one of 34 spots anyway so 15 left is fine. Take your pessimism elsewhere. We try to support each other here.

I guess some people would rather just kick others while they're down for that ever-escaping chance at an "I told you so"

PS. I'm still hoping

😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀

you can go ahead and let your thoughts of mayo eat you up, or you can relax like me, and eat a mayo sandwich, mmmmmmmmm mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and sour dough bread

Yeah, pretty much my chances of med school admittance at this point depend on Mayo to pull through for me... not good.

:'(

I got an acceptance call + full ride today at 6:30pm CST!! 🙂 There is still hope!!! I pretty much gave up on mayo when I payed the fee in August and didn't get a phone interview invite until January! Good luck everyone, miracles really do happen :luck:

Is anyone else in my shoes?

Received a rank email awhile ago, but haven't gotten the oh-so coveted phone call, nor the dreaded hold email?

Hey you are a fellow wildcat! Don't worry, you are going to get in at UofA. Perhaps we will both end up there...we can sit outside in 100+ degree weather together (both secretly wishing we were freezing our bums off).

Edit: Congrats DocKnight!

Ah I just hope I get into Mayo... then I can immediately withdraw all my other applications, and start shopping for winter clothes. 😀 I'll probably run around 4th Ave shouting, "Woohoo!" as well. 😛

so guys, is the class filled?

if solely based on these boards, we have 2 more spots left?

 i'm sure we all said on the phone interview we would never lose hope...

according to kojak they were supposed to have done it on friday, as in had a meeting and finished up. It might be possible they aren't done, but much more likely than not, its done until waitilst time 😱

It looks as though they are done until waitlist time...perhaps it is time to drown the Mayo sorrow on 4th instead🙁

I just spoke with Cindy.

There are 3 spots left.

Last year there were 12 ppl accepted from a waiting list of 80.

There's still a bit of hope!

Last year, my friend got in to Mayo around July I think. It sucks to be waiting, but there is still a chance. Good luck.

So what happens now....they have had all of their admissions meetings I assume and everyone is now ranked. Do they meet again next Thursday and decide everyone's final status???

I've been ranked but no hold/acceptance yet so I would guess (emphasizing guess) they'll have one more meeting for us late people and then fill out the waitlist.

Yeah, I'm in the same situation. I got the rank email very late in the game too, I think when I received it, there were a mere five spots left.

Now there are three. I'm completely agnostic, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't pray a little bit to see my terrible streak of bad luck for this year turn around for Mayo. 😱

I'm a little confused by all of this. So, are there three spots left for the initial round of acceptances? When I talked to Jane two Fridays ago she said that 31/34 spots were given out and last Friday somebody was accepted. So, I was logically thinking that they had filled the class already.

So does this mean they will meet either this Thursday or next Thursday to give out the final 3 spots, and then the rest of us will be rejected or waitlisted?

I called at 1 pm CST. She said 31 spots had been given out.

so, i saw this pretty late in the game, but have been reading it for support😉 i just wanted to pass on some useful info i got today from Jane in an email:

The final appointments are being offered this week. The class will be filled by March 15th. The invitations to be on the Alternate List will be extended shortly after that date. If a student withdraws, an appointment is offered to fill the seat, up to the time the class matriculates on July 23rd.

hope that helps you guys🙂
