Letters of Reference:

We require three letters of reference or a composite letter from a premedical committee. You may submit additional letters if you desire. Your references should be written by persons who know you well and whose opinions have bearing on the likelihood of your success in medical school. At least one of the references should be from a member of the science faculty. A letter from a teaching assistant is acceptable. Please ask your letter writers to include your AMCAS identification number on all letters of reference.

It doesn't seem like they ever send them out during the day. Next monday is the 4 week mark for me, and I'm losing hope that they are going to do anything with me before then (in the past it seemed like decisions were only early in the week).

I just got off the phone with the mayo admissions office. I wanted to check out the process for myself. The admissions person gave me this information. The primary IS screened on the basis of GPA & MCAT ONLY!!! Those who make the cut are invited to submit $85 for further review. Those who make this cut are asked to send in letters of reccomendation. Finally, a few interview spots are given out to those who mayo is seriously considering. She gave me these stats from last year:

Initial Applicants: 3900
Applicants that Were told to hand in $85: 2400
Applicants asked to Send in LOR: 500
Applicants interviewed: 250
Applicants accepted: 42 or so.

I know that kind of applicants that mayo must get. Sheesh...hope I make the next few cuts.

Found this on the 2nd page for people who were wondering. Dont know how accurate it is but it seems like ~50% to get an interview? God I hope the LoRs arent a major factor cuz i dont think mine are phenomenal by any means......

I got an email saying I needed to clarify about a pre-req which I did and Marcy replied that I will be getting a request for LOR within 24 hours!! My question to her was that my letters were uploaded to virtualevals a while ago with access to all my schools, including mayo. Do I have to have them sent again or can Mayo already access them? She responded with:

We had not requested letters before now so I haven't looked for any specific applicants yet. I will let you know if we have any issues.

I got an email saying I needed to clarify about a pre-req which I did and Marcy replied that I will be getting a request for LOR within 24 hours!! My question to her was that my letters were uploaded to virtualevals a while ago with access to all my schools, including mayo. Do I have to have them sent again or can Mayo already access them? She responded with:

We had not requested letters before now so I haven't looked for any specific applicants yet. I will let you know if we have any issues.

Hey Phoenix,

Any idea how many of those asked for LOR's will be getting interviews?

I believe in past years Mayo has asked for additional info from about 500 applicants (no idea if they will ask for LORs from that many this year given there's no secondary to evaluate), and interviewed anywhere from 250 to 350 applicants. I would assume the number of interview slots will be in the same ballpark again this year (probably closer to 350 than 250), but I don't know that for sure. I'll post if I hear anything.

Sounds like you're set. I wouldn't have them resent or take any action until you hear back from Marcy. I did the same thing last year (had them made available via VE early in the season) and it worked fine.

Now I'm COMPLETELY guessing, but I would think that if you're asked for more info about a missing prereq that it's probably a good sign. I can't imagine them contacting everyone who is missing a prereq. More likely than not, they've tagged your app as one of interest and are double-checking that you intend to fulfill all prereqs before they ask for LORs. I also got an email asking about a missing prereq last year.

If my letters were already uploaded to Virtual Eval before I got the letter request, do I need to do anything? Should I contact Mayo and tell them that the letters are already available, and make sure they can access them?

I kind of wish I had considered medicine before this year. It would have at least provided motivation to give something back to the community and other similar things.
