What many find during the application process is they are surprised by who does and does not want them (I was!). Just be honest with yourself and admissions committees and you will end up somewhere you belong. Hopefully that place is Mayo! Mayo is really into patient centered care and educating people who are going to be excellent clinicians from a patient interaction point of view, so if that sounds like what you are into, work it into your PS. If that is not who you want to be, schools will see through it.

Thanks for the advice! I actually have exactly that as my theme of my PS already 🙂 So that's good!

Belated congrats, Regley! That's absolutely tremendous news! 😀👍

As for where things sit, 13 people have gotten in off the alternate list as of today. There probably won't be much more movement (if any), but technically it's not over til it's over (as I learned last June). Luck to anyone with their fingers still crossed. :luck:

My only problem was that I overloaded myself this semester, with Physics 2, Biochem, O Chem 2, Italian (not a problem), and a Kaplan prep class twice a week for my MCAT. So, I was really pressed for time, but oh well I still did fine, and it's over now!
Also, it cuts a year off of undergrad tuition! Saved money!

Wow, that sounds like a tough semester. I will be applying to Mayo this year too, maybe I will see you there. Good luck!

Awesome! Yay MN 🙂 I will definitely be applying to them anyways, because I'm crazy about going there! I can't help but try.
I'm just graduating early because I went in to college with some AP credits, and I thought I could handle doing more than the average load (15 credits at my school) per semester. I also have a friend who is a year ahead of me who was graduating in 3 years (she just did), and she told me that I would be able to do it for sure. So, I just took 6 online credits last summer, and then this summer I'm taking 6 credits, and I am well on my way to graduating next spring! My only problem was that I overloaded myself this semester, with Physics 2, Biochem, O Chem 2, Italian (not a problem), and a Kaplan prep class twice a week for my MCAT. Since you are graduating early, you should really consider taking a year off to do something worthwhile and gather some additional experiences that will make you a stronger candidate. This would also allow you to better prep for the MCAT and take it again for the next cycle.

Of course, if you are eager to go ahead and apply this cycle then you should, but I would not discard the other option even while applying. A year off will most likely help you than lower your chances as long as you use it wisely.

Hi guys, I have decided to decline my offer at Mayo, so that should open up a spot for someone else who is waiting. Wish you all the best of luck and I hope one of you hopefuls gets in 🙂!

I got the call earlier today from Marcy!! I still can't believe it, and every few minutes am doing my Mayo dance! I just wanted to let you all know, because I didn't think that there was a chance at all, but the waitlist is still moving!! GOOD LUCK!!!

Hey, did any of you participate in the Mayo SURF program? If so, do you think it had an impact in your admissions?

I was actually rejected from the SURF program two years in a row! (I got in)

Seems like a fair amount of other admitted students have Mayo connections (SURF, working there, volunteering there, from Rochester, etc.).

I know that at least one person (out of three) on my interview day participated in the SURF program.

Three years of SURF rejection for me! I still worked there for two summers in various positions, though.

haha yeah I worked there for a summer and then applied to the SURF program the next year and got in. It seemed like the whole time I was in the SURF program, they were trying to recruit us into their grad school and PhD program. It felt like all the SURFers were pretty much a shoo-in for a PhD acceptance, but I was just wondering if their med school felt the same way.

Technically it is more difficult to get into SURF than Mayo Graduate School, there are probably 4-5 SURFs in my class although the bulk are MD/PhDs. To be honest I think the benefit of doing SURF on MMS admission is comparatively small these days. Although it probably varies based on who you worked for, and if they end up writing a letter. If you really want to go to Mayo, do research during the year and spend your parents hard earned $$$ to "volunteer" in a third world country for a summer(s). Having the money to jet set off to third world countries rather than hold a summer job seems to make ones application to MMS all that more sexy. Still a fantastic place to get your medical education, but since I've been here I've definitely seen a shift in the demographics/make-up of the classes below me.
