For a while it seemed like I was the only one bugging these guys over the phone🙂 I'm glad though that a couple of other people jumped in. It is really wierd that the dean would be reviewing a file. I am guessing that all the people who have had to wait over a month are being reviewed by the same person. This could mean a couple of things:
1) They simply divide the apps up and we got sent to the busiest person.
OR
2) The others who got LOR requests before us were just THAT good and they are giving us a look by the dean because we were borderline.
OR
3) We're have something in our applications that has caught their eye and they really like us and have made separate pool of "OMG this person is mayo material" people.

I'm personally hoping its #3😀

No LoR confirmation for me either thought I sent them last week. I am surprised I made it that far and I REALLY hope that whatever they saw in my PS pulls me into an interview because that would make this application cycle 100% more awesome.

Yea I saw it, just thought it took a lot longer when compared to the primary/fee receipt turnaround. And Mayo is indeed 😍
 
Gosh, it would be really nice to visit Mayo. I'm really starting to get very excited about the school. I realized I wanted to apply there well over three months ago, but every time I learn something new about the school, I just want to go even more to see if what I hear is true 😀.

Well, we'll see how things turn out...an interview can tell you a lot about whether or not the school is a good match.

My friend called Mayo the other day and explained to me how Mayo evaluated him last year. They gave him what he called a "personal score" and an "academic score". He was placed on hold after the interview and eventually rejected -- not enough clinical experience, they said (which is more or less true). He really liked his interview experience with Mayo, though.

Well besides the very small class size, their curriculum is awesome. 😍 The study one topic at a time in blocks of up to six weeks at a time and then you get a 2 week selective after blocks to travel, do research, etc. I would loveee to attend Mayo one day, the program is awesome although I'm not too happy with its location. It's definitely my dream school and number one choice although I know the chances of me getting in are slim. But one can still dream...

Sooooo.....if a wiley looking leprechaun just suddenly came in front if you and told you it could magically get you into mayo....but...you would have to give up or do something in return. What would you do?....
A) Give up your first born.
B) Get the residency from hell.
C) Be bitten by a rabid Dingo.
D) Get elephentiasis in your dominant leg.
E) Get a kidney stolen in a 3rd world country while on a medical mision.

I think everyone is going to choose C because that is the least impacting and most easily cured. Unless it was on your genitals for an hour or something....

Also, tiny tuition, low cost of living, the philosophy and approach to teaching is very patient-centric, plus access to the mayo clinic (and away clinicals in key west 😛).

The doctors are really awesome as well, and they seem pretty involved with the med school. You can pretty much see or shadow anything you're interested in. The options for selective and where and what you can do is pretty impressive as well...students go all over the planet and it's paid for by mayo.

It's also a really beautiful facility...with lots of artwork and all. The organization of the clinic is pretty impressive as well...the way every here works together.

To continue my preview of life as a first year, we started our first block last week, which consists of Histology, Genetics and a basic doctoring class (we're learning how to do patient interviews and sexual histories this week and next week). We have lectures and small group sessions from 8-12 everyday (with Histo on T & Th and Genetics on M,W,F), with basic doctoring one or two afternoons a week from 2-5pm. There's one exam for both Histo and Genetics at the end of six weeks (Basic Doctoring continues all year), followed by two weeks of selectives before we start our six week Anatomy block (which includes radiology). As a quick summary, some perks are $29,100 tuition with everyone in the class getting $15,000 or $25,000 scholarships (and need based aid not based on any parental income), cheap cost of living in Rochester, a $5,000 travel stipend to use for underserved service trips or rotations/shadowing at the Florida and Arizona Mayo hospitals, the huge resources of the Mayo Clinic facilities and doctors (especially for research and shadowing), an incredibly clinically-focused curriculum and teaching style, early patient exposure/contact, research quarter (vast majority of med students have publications, which really helps with residency applications), first two years are purely pass/fail, you have two week long "selectives" (after each six week block) during which you can do pretty much anything medically related that you're interested in (or take vacation), block style curriculum with decreased lecture time, great facilities, and a really amazing mission/history/goal of putting the patient first.

Just thought I'd take a few seconds to congratulate everyone who keeps moving on in the application process, and to thank (you) Phoenix for giving us continual insight into the life of a Mayo student. I (and undoubtedly others) really do appreciate you giving your time to us!
 
After pressing a button on my keyboard, my computer "woke up", I then logged in and went to check Thunderbird. An email from Mayo sat in my inbox, I AM INVITED TO INTERVIEW.

DING DING DING, my cellphone alarm is ringing, I then realized it was all a dream....

It's sad that I dreamed about Mayo last night, but I guess that's what happens when you want to go there so much and keep talking about Mayo with all your friends, some of whom might not even heard about Mayo before.

To get into Mayo I would give up my first born to a rabid Dingo while on a medical mission trip to Indonesia, which by some terrible luck had a mosquito on it that gave me elephantiasis, then while in the hospital I would be sedated and some thief would cut me open and take my kidney (did you mean kidney stone? I'd have two of those, too... Before my kidney was stolen, even). This would all happen while I was on my vacation from the residency from hell.


...Okay, so I wouldn't do that. But close.

What is the significance of getting the LOR request? Won't they ask that from everyone before one is rejected/offered an interview? Or does mayo look at the app before letters and reject some people beforehand?

It's one of the hurdles in the race. Some (though I don't know the percentage) are rejected pre-LOR request. Just above your post that's shown as "Yay" and "Nay." Note: This is different from previous years.

EDIT: Just in case you did not know, Mayo does not have a secondary application this year. In other words, the LOR request (if I remember correctly) IS the secondary for Mayo.

I know it's hard, but hold tight, guys. This is nothing official, but I think that they may be gearing up to start sending some interview invitations soon. And for those wondering, invites went out via email last year, and I would guess that they would go out via email again this year as well.

As for those still waiting to hear back about LOR requests, I feel for you. It's a hard wait, but in the scheme of the ridiculously year-long application process, four-plus weeks is much shorter than it feels. And I hate to say it, but if you find waiting to hear back pre-interview is painful now, just imagine waiting to hear back post-interview after each adcom meeting after you've fallen in love with a school in person, waiting to find out if you're rejected or waitlisted, waiting to find out if you'll get off the waitlist, etc. There's a lot of agonizingly drawn out waiting in this process, and I fear some of you will end up as premature medical school application burn-outs in no time. As impossible as it is, perhaps try for a more zen "if it's meant to be, it'll be" approach to keep you sane.

Yeah...though I think they'll be sending some out tonight...fits with their schedule for the past 4 weeks anyway...though Marcy did say it might be a few weeks. At least they're sending out LOR requests as well as rejections...so mail from mayo can go either way...I think it was a bit worse when the only thing going out were rejections.

I called, sorta asking what's up since it's been more than 4 weeks after my payment and still no news. Marcy pretty much said that I should be hearing back in the next 1-2 weeks, and that it's just taking a while because they're doing a "thorough" evaluation of everyone, as they'd like!

Congrats you two! I had a dream that more LOR requests went out last night... creepy. :laugh:

It seems to me that they must be asking for LOR's from more than 500 people this year, because the ratio of yays:nays is more than 2:1.. right? It seems like if it was only 500 it would be much less than the nays.😕
 
You're assuming self-selection doesn't exist on SDN. It definitely does. SDN is not the average premed population.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Even if SDN does reflect the upper 15% of the pre-med pool, you still wouldn't see this many "yays" if only 500 LOR requests went out. Maybe the numbers are higher this year because they didn't have a secondary phase as well 🙂confused🙂.
