I'm thinking of doing a sub-i at Mayo. I've heard that it's all business suits all the time. What if I only own 1 suit? Not going to look great if I show up wearing the same thing every day for a month, and I really can't invest in a bunch of suits. Any mayo residents who can give me some input?

If you're doing a hospital-based subinternship (surgical or one with overnight call) you can wear scrubs and white coats provided by the hospital half of the time. Rest of the time you do need a suit and it may be worth your while to get some shirts and ties if you don't change your suit ever.

Or buy a decent sport coat and a couple pair of nice trousers...JC Penney's got some decent cheap stuff. They are more versatile than a suit.

Which type of sub-i will you be doing?

When do you have a chance to actually be wearing a suit when you wear a white coat within the hospital 99% of the time?

If the place is that formal, they might even frown at you wearing scrubs when you're on call!

Thanks people. I'll be doing a sub-i in one of the surgical subspecialties, so it sounds like it may not be that bad.
So sport coats are OK? I've only heard rumors (nothing substantiated) and it sounded to me like three piece suits are a requirement.

No, a sport coat, nice slacks, with a tie are fine. Scrubs are fine for in-patient service. Any time in the clinic the fancy clothes will be needed. Good luck and have fun...don't forget a nice warm coat, hat, and gloves...High temperature of -5 today...
