Hey all.

Have any of you guys applied (and/or been accepted) to the Mayo Clinic Summer Research Fellowship for pre-MS2s? What is your opinion of it?

I've currently got a summer project lined up at my home institution (top 25 school, not in the top 10) in an urban area, but I was wondering if I should trash it for Mayo? For reference, I'm not gunning for derm or ortho or anything. Thoughts?

Will you be able to publish? Is it with a big name? I am currently at Mayo and there are some excellent researchers here; however, if you have a similar situation at home then screw it

The problem is that they're assigning us faculty mentors - and won't tell us who they are. 😡

I agree with you - if I don't see a chance of publishing anything, I'll stay at my home institution. But given Mayo's "name", I don't want to pass it up.

Also, I have no idea what kind of lifestyle (even if it is only for a few weeks) Rochester will give me - I'm used to living in a urban non-coast city with lots of amenities and things to do.

FLAPPLICANT - pm me. I'll let you know what I did.

I'm considering applying this year and was wondering if you could help me get an idea of how competitive it is to get a spot in this program. I'm a M1 at UKCOM and did research at Mayo as an undergrad. I had a lot of research as an undergraduate and worked as a research assistant for two years at Cincinnati Children's Hospital before starting medical school. I'm female but not a part of any of the minority groups mentioned on the web site. If you think my chances are not very good, do you have any other suggestions of laces to go this summer for paid research? My home institution is not really an option because they require this translational course that I am not going to be able to take. Thanks for your help!

Isn't it only for the minority groups listed on the website? If you're not a minority I would say your chances are zero, right?

I was accepted. I still don't know who my mentor is. I'm interested in Neurosurgery. Hopefully, the research is in neurosurgery.

I applied and was rejected. I know why though. My entire PS was on neurodegenerative diseases. I called Dr. Mays when I realized that the options on their application didn't include research in neurodegenerative diseases, neurology, or psychiatry. I had talked to him 3 years before for a post-bac when they did offer those research in my areas of interest. Anyway, he told me that the people giving the grant only were funding research in heart, lung, and blood research topics or something like that. I hope this helps anyone still trying to make a decision. You are welcome to call him. He is a very nice man. I went ahead and applied because I had already requested letters before I realized it.

My entire PS had neuroscience specific things as well and I got accepted. If that's true, that's sort of disappointing that they won't have anything related to my field of interest...

I applied late as well, which probably had a lot to do with my rejection because I was waiting on my Dean's letter. Since they accepted on a rolling basis. That actually upset me a little bit because I told the secretary who was responsible for submitting it way ahead to complete the letter for me and she just kept pushing the deadline until that Friday before the deadline. However, in the grand scheme of things I would have turn down the appointment, so it works out. Here's my rejection as proof. Good luck to the rest of you on deciding. I'm sure it will be great!

Dear XXXX:

Thank you for your interest in the Summer Research Fellowship program. We received an overwhelming number of applications this year, and the caliber of all of our applicants has impressed us. Unfortunately, we are only able to accept a small group to participate in our program. We are writing to let you know that we are not able to offer you an appointment this year. We appreciate all of the hard work and effort you put into your application and encourage you to re-apply next year if you remain eligible.

As you continue down your career path, we welcome you to consider other education opportunities at Mayo Clinic. One in particular that we would like to mention is the Visiting Medical Student Clerkship that offers a $2,500 diversity scholarship. If you are interested in Mayo Clinic's residency program, we strongly recommend you apply.
More information can be found on the program website here:
