Does anyone know how Mayo dermatopathology lab is viewed in the dermpath world ? Is it part of derm or path department?
How competitive is their fellowship? Thanks.

I interviewed there. It is Mayo, so the reputation should never be in question. Their dermatology and pathology departments, unfortunately, are not in very good terms as far as dermatopathology is concerned --- the fellowship is handled purely by dermatology and the faculty are all dermatology-trained. However, they have Dr. Flotte who is pathology-trained and who signs out dermatopathology only for the pathology department. Kind of weird that way, if that makes sense at all. But you will get excellent clinical training there, which you need if you are coming from pathology. Having said all that, it was in 2007-2008 when I interviewed there, so things may have changed. Also, having to live in Rochester is something you may want to think about. But I guess anybody can do anything for one year, specially if it is to do something you love.

Thank you for your input.
Why is not very good? Because they are all dermatology-trained people?
According to their website, Dr. Flotte is one of the fellowship directors.
I am thinking about applying dermpath fellowship this year. Do you recommend other programs in Mid-West region?

I did not say that Mayo was not good. I just made a comment about the derm and path departments not getting along that well when it came to dealing with dermpath. But now that Flotte is appararently a program director, then perhaps they have fixed any problems they might have had. Like I said, Mayo is Mayo --- you cannot go wrong by going there (if you are lucky enough to get a spot there). No problem either with having only dermatology-trained faculty. In fact, for a path-trained fellow, that might be the best scenario.

Apply to all programs. Do not handpick just a few. A dermpath fellowship is a dermpath fellowship. It does not matter too much where you do it.
