anybody feel liked they screwed up the phone interview. It makes me feel sad that I'm going to be the 100 people that they cut.

I am applying to Mayo also, but do not have my MCAT scores yet. Therefore my phone interview is hopefully in future. What was it like?

very deep

i thought i screwed up the phone interview and ended up getting an in-person interview.

from my experience it's hard to judge how well you do in interviews because you always tend to be more critical of yourself than others do.

Yeah I had all the questions from interview feedback but my interview lasted a very short time and on top of that it is my top choice so i was going "you better not screw this one....you better not screw this one...." over and over and that made me more nervous...I ultimately calmed down but I don't know if it was too late for that ..... lets hope not.....I take it that you are a student at Mayo.....how do you like it so far??? I really wish I could go there to study.....lets see .... I will know in a week or so.....well I have to add that Jane in Admissions office is super nice every time I call her...are all the people as good or better 😀

You would be surprised how many people feel the same way you do about the phone interview. I felt that way as have many people that have ultimately interviewed here. I answered everything very off the cuff and felt like there was no way it could turn out good for me, but it did and Im here now. My feeling is that you cant really ace the thing. In fact, I would argue, reading the questions and prepping in advance might actually hurt you. The point of the whole thing is to get a sense of who you are, not who you can be. Sounding canned cant be a good thing in that regard. In any case, just wait and see, no sense worrying about something you cant change now (easy for me to say I know 😳 ).

What was the turn around time for how soon they got back to you after the phone interview? They said "two weeks", but is it true?

They are very good at sticking to their time table. Expect to hear right around then.

just a little information for everyone. i was at my mayo interview today and they said due to the high volume of qualified applicants this year, they expect to telephone interview upwards of 500 people and interview ~275 in rochester. last year they had similar numbers of onsite interviews (i think) and they made 60 or so appointments to the first year class.

i absolutely loved it up there. it's now my top choice thus far.

Once you receive the telephone interview, is getting the on-site interview wholly based on your responses, or are your credentials still being considered as a factor on whether or not to invite you to Rochester??

I don't know for sure, but last year when they invited you for the phone interview they also asked you to send your letters of recommendation. So, I would guess your letters are evaluated along with the phone interview.

Thanks for the info MDT. Any other opinions about this??

So the two-week-post-phone-interview mark passed yesterday for me. Am I done? As in on runaway train to rejectionville? 😳

For those of you who are worried about your botched interview. I thought I did pretty well or at least articulated my philosophy well and it looks like I didn't make the cut. Like others have said how you feel about it doesn't have much bearing on their decision.

Good luck 👍

don't worry, i got notified for the onsite interview invite between 2-3 weeks after the phone interview, though they told me it would take about 2 weeks. so be patient and wait...

just to let you know, mayo is awesome. definitely worth checking out.

OK. I will keep the torch lit. Thanks for the info.

Sight unseen, it is still my first choice.

Anyone know how long its taking them recently to get back to you after the phone interview? Mine was 2 weeks ago so I am just curious.

Interview 10/12. Got the boot via snail mail 11/1. 🙁

If you get the invite it should come faster because it's emailed.

BTW, I thought my interview went well, but apparently they thought differently. Their reception is unpredictible from what I've read.

Good luck to you 👍

Rejection after the phone-interview as well =[ I think Mayo has a pretty distinct personality and they want people who fit into their culture.... Don't think it is about doing "well" or "poorly" on the phone interview (which is pretty wacky anyway).

I've heard others say this as well. There must be some truth to it.

I'll take it as consolation 🙂 And as my wife so aptly put it, " it's damn cold there anyway."

The cruel irony is that I got rejected at my first choice and am on hold at my last choice on the same day. WTF?

found out i was put on hold today... and i thought the interview went really really well. i loved mayo too. i'm a bit disappointed, but oh well.

Hang in there. They obviously want to keep you in the pool. And try not to rationalize the process. It ain't that rational.

don't worry, a hold at mayo still gives you a really good chance to get in - you're considered everytime they meet. I remember from previous posts that quite a number of people get accepted when they were originally on "hold".

me too! i thought the interview went so well. but oh well, it's not a rejection

looks like it's nothing but holds today. 😡 i got one too. and my interview went really well too. i was 100 percent sure i would get in.

well in the spirit of keeping positive, maybe they put us all on hold to make next thursday's acceptance that much sweeter!

I'm jealous of you folks and your great interviews. Mayo was my first interview and I stumbled all over myself. I'm happy to have gotten the email telling me I'm on hold and not a letter in the mail saying I was rejected because I had trouble forming coherent sentences.

For me, Mayo is a looooooonnng shot. Still, I've got a shot even if it is a long one.

Good Luck to all on waitlists everywhere.

Does Mayo even reject people post-interview now? I thought they don't reject people until much later in the game! (great, now I'm going to avoid my mailbox)

Truthfully, I haven't heard of anyone this year who had a bad interview at Mayo - all I've been hearing is how great everybody's interview is, so now, even though I felt my interview went well, since my credentials aren't nearly as impressive as anyone else's, my hopes are kind of dashed. Right now, I'm hoping for a hold e-mail.....i haven't even been RANKED and it's been almost a month.

how do you know you were put on hold? did they call you or did you receive an email that said you were on hold?

they told us that once a week, the admissions committee meets and ranks the applicants from the last week of interviews. you should get an email stating that you have been given a rank. once a month, the committee meets and gives appointments (acceptance offers). i think you should get an email after this meeting also if you weren't given an acceptance that round. each month, they will look at all the ranked candidates and give acceptances.
does this sound right to anyone else?

i just got a mayo on-site interview invitation and am psyched (it took about 2.5 weeks to hear from them)....

Any advice for those who interviewed already?..

Did you stay with a student host?

goodluck to the rest of you :luck:

I know a lot of you guys are worried that Mayo has not gotten back with you about your application status or that you've got the hold e-mail. I interviewed last year around early november and I recieved a rank e-mail in the middle of December. My application went before committe in January and I got the hold e-mail followed by an acceptance call in the middle of February when they met again. Don't give up hope if they let you know that you are on hold...there are quite a few people in our class that were first put on hold when their application initially came up for review and then later got in.

From talking with a person on the ad com it seems like so far they have only given out spots to people that really scored high on the interview section (they score your interviews on I believe eight catergories and each interviewer gives you a score out of 5 and then they average that to get your final score on the interview section). Mayo is a wonderful place to learn how to be an incredible/compassionate doctor and I'm so glad that I chose to come here. If you guys have any other questions feel free to ask...

When did you do your telephone interview? Mine was on the 19th and I have yet to hear back.

Hey Ranger,

mine was on the 18th... I don't think they completely go in order. It's probably a random pile of everyone they interview in a week or so, considering the admissions committee meets once a week.

I'm sure you'll hear good news really soon. 👍

I got put on hold too. I was disappointed, but not too surprised since I thought I screwed up my second interview. It was one of those situations where all the students I talked to before the interview asked with whom I was interviewing and when they heard, the general consensus was they were really nice. But I didn't feel as though they were very impressed with me. 😳

But nevertheless, Mayo is still my number one, so I'm holding out hope for the next time they meet or they time after that... etc. :luck:

I was put on hold, but I wanted to know if it would be helpful to write a letter of intent before the committee meets again. Has anyone done this? or spoke to soemone in Mayo admissions about doing this?

Someone said in another mayo thread that it probably wouldn't help much because the ranking is fixed (they assign the numerical score after your interview and it doesn't really change). Another person told me that it couldn't hurt, which is true - if it's truly your #1 school, and you're really sure that you would attend here over every other school, then I don't see how it can hurt you.

As for me, I'm not sure. Mayo is my #1 choice, but I don't know if I want to write Letter of Intent to a school that has a fixed rank. I am waitlisted at a few schools that are also top choices, and If I'm ranked really really low, I don't want to write a letter of intent to a school where I can't do much to improve it, you know what I mean?

I know my post doesn't help, but I would really suggest calling them and asking - they're incredibly nice from what i hear.

Hey Gobucky,
I called mayo today wondering whether I need to update my file, or if I could send other stuff...
Jane was really nice, but basically told me it doesn't matter what I send it at this point because the admissions committee won't be looking at it. They really just take your initial application (AMCAS, interview stuff etc.) out and base their decision on that stuff.

I think that kind of letter will be most helpful once they arrive at their decision; and in case you get wait-listed. Goodluck. (of course, that's just what I think based on the conversation. If you feel more comfortable sending in a letter of intent, go for it!) 🙂
