Mayo-Scottsdale

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I spent two months on the surgical service as an intern last year at MCS. In my mind this is the ideal program. Intern call is very light on average q5 with a good amount of sleep on most nights. The faculty are the best in the country at what they do and they treat everyone from the scrub techs to the CEO of the hospital with equal repect. The didactics are excellent as well. Last yeaR the rumorwas that they went to #4 on their ranklist for 3 spots. Another benifit is if you are looking for a fellowship you are guarenteed of a good one having Mayo on your CV.

Anyone heard of a DO matching here? Assuming top 5 in class, top 5% on USMLE and a good rotation, what do you think.

I don't know myself. I'd think the best way would be just to call up their program director and ask if you should bother applying.

Coincidentally, as a 2nd year EM resident I was on the same team as a couple other Scottsdale Mayo surgery residents for trauma in Phoenix. Though the hours were typically long, I got the idea that they weren't especially malignant. Both of the guys I worked with were super-nice and of course very sharp. Not at all the stereotypical butthead surgeons. I don't know whether they were representative of the whole residency, but nobody else in my program had any difficulties with any of the Mayo guys that I can recall.

p.s. They were both MDs.

*sigh*

Seriously, as a DO myself in a relatively MD-dominated hospital, you need to get beyond the whole DO/MD issue.

Would you *not* apply if they hadn't had any DOs in their hospital?

I applied to over 40 MD EM residencies. Got over half of those applications accpeted with interviews. Who would have thought that if I han'dt applied?!?!?! Just apply. Who knows who will accept you for an interview!

Q, DO

Of course I will apply, and I am over the whole DO/MD thing. But there are some programs and some specialties, that arent, wouldnt you agree? Regardless, I was just looking to see if anyone had a personal experience with this program.

I believe that one of the DO schools in the midwest (not sure which one) placed someone into ortho at mayo recently, and if you do a google search you will find a couple others that have done ortho at mayo (rochester)

I'm at the "mother ship" Mayo in Rochester and I'll tell you right now that there are DO's in ortho, IM, psych, PM&R, peds, neuro, family medicine, gen surg, nephro, cards, GI, infectious dz, path, OB/GYN, and these are just the ones I've informally met. It really comes down to academic credentials, board scores (USMLE helps), rotation experience, research, and having spent time at Mayo. The DO vs MD thing is not an issue.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it...now I just have to get some 'real' research...any suggestions? (I am an MS-II, with a poster day project to my credit)

Last year MCS Gen Surg interviewed two D.O. applicants. One of the applicants was ranked highly, but did not match there.

If you want an extra edge on the other applicants commit yourself to research as one of the three cat. spots is set aside for an applicant who will be taking a year off during the 5yrs to do research.

If you matched there you would be the first D.O. in gen Surgery at MCS.

No, you would need to be published and have good research under your belt, if you wanted to show them you are serious about this.
