This last cycle I was waitlisted then rejected from the only DO school that I applied to. Since then I have graduated with degrees in Chem and Bio, and reapplied to 15 DO schools. My stats are not great (3.2gpa 7ps, 8bs, 9vr MCAT, 10bs, 8ps, 6vr, MCAT, damn verbal!) but I have great LOR, volunteer, etc..etc. Since I have so many undergrad hours (160) and have run out of science classes to take, my advisor just told me to not attend classes this year and do something else. I really think that taking a year off would be a negative thing, but my university has told me that they probably would not consider me for any masters programs in the science dept because I could be leaving a year from now. They do have a MBA program that I could do. This was something that I was considering doing while in medical school (DO/MBA) but now I have a few questions about what this will look like to admissions committees..
  • Will the MBA GPA count for something?
  • Will it look poorly that I started a masters program that I may not finish, even though I really do want an MBA?
  • Should I just take a semester of random elective classes instead?
Thanks

How is your clinical experience? I plan to use my time off to get some more clinical experience.

Tons.. I really have a pretty complete app'. I just have low scores and didn't get in last year. I hope that one of the 15 will be willing to take a chance.

I am not an ADCOM, but I think Medical schools will want to see that GPA. I would look into Master of science programs around the country. You need to show schools you can handle a medical school course load. Drexel University in Phili. seemed to have a one year program which enables you to take six medical school classes, There may be others were you live do some research on that. I think in your case you need to get that GPA as high as possible. Do you have anymore undergrad science courses that you still will want to take like upper level physics. I know Allopathic Schools would like you to finish MBA. If start MBA and stop they will look at you as an academic risk because what would stop you from dropping out of Medical School. Osteopahtic schools may be more lenient. How is your Science GPA? If your science GPA is in the 3.3+ you should take a year of electives. Take 100 level courses in many different area's. It will look good because you can show the schools you are an all around applicant with broad and vast interests. Usually these courses are easy. Ask around for good professor's they can make a difference between an A and a C. I think, if you want the DO/MBA you need to focus on getting yourself into the Osteopathic program first. I hope you are accepted to the school of your choice. Good Luck!!!:luck::luck::luck:

MBA will not count for much if you are pursuing medicine with a mediocre GPA. I would suggest additional course work and improving your verbal. This is someone who graduated from an MBA program and is now applying to medical school 😉

Do the DO/MBA prg OR just wait until residency. Some of the joint degrees for DO's aren't very strong in my opinion and need alot of kinks worked out from what I've seen.

Thanks to everyone... As to the question about my science GPA it is also a 3.2, but since I have so many hours, even a semester of A’s wont add much to my total GPA. Plus I just hate the idea of taking a bunch of random classes. There are really not any upper level science classes that I can take other than engineering courses, and I don’t have the pre-requisites for those... I am at a bit of a stand still.

Have you considered retaking classes you already have taken for better grades?

Have you considered spending a semester studying for MCAT and retaking that bad boy?

If I were you I'd do both and reapply with a higher MCAT and Higher GPA. And since you say you already have strong everything you should be a lot stronger canidate for next round.

You really need to spend time boosting the GPA or the MCAT. Obviously, boost both if you can.
