Hey all! Has anyone applied to or got into the MBS program at UMDNJ in Stratford? I was wondering if anyone has heard about linkage programs with the SOM?

Discussed at length in multiple threads, try searching or looking back a few pages

Just accepted today 🙂

Was curious about what the schedule is like for classes. Any idea?

Congrats on your acceptance! From what I've gathered it looks like you take 3 or 4 Masters classes a semester and then an elective which is usually a class at the SOM. It's a bit hard to find info about this program in my honest opinion.

Hey, congrats!!! I'm currently in the program, most of the classes are evening classes, usually from 5pm to 8pm, depending on the course, but for the most part, evening. You need 4 Core courses, 3 of them offered in the fall (9 credits) and 1 offered in the spring (3 credits), and 18 credits of electives. You can take up to 3 courses at the School of Public Health (whose courses are mostly evening as well) and up to 2 courses at the School of Osteopathic Medicine, which are held during the day, but not on a consistent schedule, the schedule varies weekly. These count as your electives, however, if you take Medical Physiology (a SOM course) you don't need to take the Core class offered in the Spring (Fundamentals III: Physiology). Hope this helps.

Thanks so much that helps out a lot. If you don't mind me asking do you know what kind of linkages there are to the SOM or the MD school? And is there anything to worry about with the Rowan Univ merger in your mind?

There are no linkages, and because the campus is on the same campus as the SOM, they really tout the relationship you can have with the SOM. From what I got from orientation, they say to make appointments with the admissions counselor at the SOM so she can get to know you, and as long as you have the average MCAT score, 26, and above a 3.5 GPA in the program, she'll go at bat for you and you will most likely get in. The merger is still new, so no word how this will apply to the MD school, but what I got from orientation about the merger is that UMDNJ will be no more, so would you rather get your degree awarded from an extinct institution or something people will know down the line <shrugs>. It made the pill a little less bitter to swallow when you think about that, frankly, it would've been a lot less bitter if it was going to be Rutgers, like the other 2 campuses. As a NYer, I've never heard of Rowan, but I have heard of Rutgers, but as far as day-to-day operations go, it doesn't look like anything will change other than the name, maybe the possibility to take courses at Rowan? But it hasn't been made clear yet.

If you were enrolled in UMDNJ prior to Fall 2012 - you will be awarded dual diplomas to UMDNJ and Rutgers upon completion.

If you started in Fall 2012 for an MD/DO, then you will get the new school SOM=Rowan, MD-Rutgers.

So the whole extinct university thing is a bit overblown, you can always get diplomas from the new school.

UMDNJ used to be CMDNJ, and graduates from CMDNJ can get UMDNJ diplomas if they wish - and they will be entitled to a Rutgers if they so wish. No-one cares what the name is *edit - the MD or GSBS campuses at Newark/New Brunswick that is*- don't make a mountain out of a mole-hill

Sounds great! I paid my deposit this week so as of now it looks like NJ is a go for me!

Just to clarify and make sure you aren't misunderstanding me - the GSBS program at Stratford has no links with the two MD schools.

So if you go there - you are putting of legs into the DO school (soon to be Rowan)

Yeah, I've been planning to go the DO route all along so it should be fine. That's the reason I chose to apply to the program in stratford as opposed to Newark or wherever the other one is. Thanks for the clarification though

hi everyone, I've decided to apply to the program just a few questions. Did you have a LORs from just you science courses or other ones (like work, non-science courses, volunteer, and etc.) Also I find the application a bit short, did you just list your activities in the space provided without really explaining anything? Also how did you go about writing your personal statement is it worth including things about why you want to be a doctor, or just keep it at why you want to attend the program? I would really appreciate it, I'm actually going to have to apply quite late because I'm not taking my MCAT till April, but we will see.

As far as the application goes I would say that it was definitely a shorter one than some of the others that I did. I basically just filled it all out online and I didn't even have very much detail to be honest. Kind of breezed through this one thinking I wouldn't get in for some reason. For the LORs I had one from a science professor, one from a DO and one from the lady who's the volunteer director at a clinic I work at. Personal statement wise mine was definitely focused on the fact that I want to go to medical school, just that I want to be better prepared so I think the masters is a great opportunity.

Also, I'd apply asap and just let them know that your MCAT scores will be in come April. That way you're app will be ready and probably reviewed and they can just look at your mcat scores and make a decision.

Good luck!

Hey All,

Thanks for this wonderful thread. I was accepted a couple of weeks ago and just sent in my intent letter and deposit today. I was waiting to do more research about the program itself. I also find it a little taxing to find information about it. Moreover, with the merger, it's even a little more difficult. But I am glad I found this posting.

I like that this program offers intense biomedical graduate level courses to supplement undergraduate academic deficits and allows you to take one actual medical school course at the SOM each semester. But one pitfall for me is that there is no MCAT prep included 🙁.

Can a past student that successfully completed the program and then matriculated to medical school (M.D. or D.O.) post here about their experience? That'd be GOLD!

Thank you in advance.

Also, my bio is a bit convoluted but I am committed to becoming a physician! 25 y/o 2.67 UG GPA (Major: Biology College: UCR) and 3.81 Grad GPA (Major: Biological Sciences, Thesis Concentration: Pediatric Cancer Biology, College: DSU) MCAT 23Q. Most recently, I have been working for two years as a research technician in a Pediatric Cancer Biology Laboratory directly connected to a Childrens Hospital.

Any tips (linkages, which courses to take), past experiences (what not and what to do while in the program), financial aid help (also scholarships, if available), housing detail help would all be welcome!

Thank you guys so much (again lol) in advance.

Sincerely,

Tori

Hey there,

I used two letters. One from my current job, where I work as a research tech, and one from a past professor at my Graduate School, with whom I have a great relationship with.

I sent in my resume with the application so speak to my outside accomplishments, and on my personal statement I mentioned both why I need to attend the program (to pursue med due to certain deficits) and why I'd like to become a physician. 🙂 Hope this helps and good luck!

Hi I actually just found out I got in. I ended up applying as non-matriculating because I didn't my late MCAT test date to be the reason I didn't get in. In case there were no seats available left.

Hello all, I have just received acceptance today and will be attending this program in the Fall. I have created a Facebook group for this program, for which the link is posted below, for the 2013-2014 year and invite all those who have been accepted to join so we can start to get to know each other as well as help each other succeed. Any past students are encouraged to join as well in the hopes you can offer us new students guidance. Look forward to meeting everyone!

Congrats! How long did it take to hear after your application was complete?

Just got my acceptance!!! I cried because I applied so late. Like 1.5 weeks ago!!! Woo hoo! One step closer to becoming a physician!!

My application was received May 9 and complete shortly after.

How is everyone's communication with UMNDJ? I'm communicating through [email protected] and their correspondence is terrible. I'm sure my emails are sent b/c I bcc myself.

To this day I still haven't heard from them. Will call soon.

I've been emailing a specific person rather than that email and the responses have been pretty short but always come real quick. I can send you the specific email through PM if you want as I don't think we're supposed to be posting emails on here.

I'm not a big fan of how they changed the application deadline. Half the site says the deadline is still june 15th but through email they've said they will not look at my app if one thing arrives after tomorrow.

My application was complete 5/16 and I was accepted 5/28. Correspondence was always direct with someone from admissions.

Congrats on your acceptance! Are you for sure going? Did the acceptance come through email or regular mail? Need to know if I should be compulsively refreshing my email or checking the mail box next week:laugh:

Thanks! Yes I am def going. They sent me an acceptance letter to sign and mail back with my deposit. There is info on a mandatory orientation in July. I can PM you the name of the person I have been dealing with.

Thanks for the info, does the program start in July or is it just the orientation?
