Hello Guys,

How do MD schools generally see an applicant if he or she plans to re-take the MCAT after receiving interview invites?

Thanks for any input 🙂

First off, why?

Also, you would have to indicate if you are retaking the MCAT on the AMCAS (meaning update it) if you would like the score to be considered on this cycle. If you do not say anything, then the schools will not use the score on your application. That means if you have a 28 and get a 42 on the retake, schools will judge you on the 28.

Some schools may view it differently, but that depends on the school. What I mentioned above is what two secondaries told me (I don't remember which ones). I suggest contacting each school and how they view this.

If you received an interview invite, that means that the school has judged that you're probably able to handle the material. Why would you retake? If you indicate that you are retaking, they won't extend an invite until they get the score.

MCAT score is much more important pre-interview than after interview. Once you've interviewed, the 'soft' parts of the application matter much more, such as your fit to the school, your EC's and how you came off in the interview.

The reason I ask is because I was not confident with my April score, so I decided to study this whole Summer and not register for it until I felt I could do better. I ended up getting 3 interview invites so far. Right now I feel I can do better than my last exam and have registered for it. What do you think? Would it be better to re-take? Or just cancel it?

How bad could your MCAT score be if you got 3 interviews lined up?

Thanks, I didn't know this would happen until today, that's why I decided to go on SDN and ask for opinions. Do the schools mind if you already have an interview and decide to take the MCAT again? Since I already registered, do you think I should cancel it? or go ahead and take it? Thanks 🙂

I had a 7 in verbal. I guess these schools were able to see past that. I've been trying to improve my verbal this whole summer and feel I can do much better if I take it again.

I would cancel. Most people can probably score higher with some extra study. There are diminishing returns to higher scores. Once you reach a certain threshold, a higher score won't increase your chances significantly since your scores basically say that you're intelligent and you can handle learning a ton of science quickly. Having three interviews already means your application is pretty good. So just focus on acing those them.
