I am planning on applying to medical school this upcoming cycle. I just received my MCAT scores, and I was extremely shocked to discover that I received a 6 in Verbal Reasoning, although I had received 11 in both Biological and Physical Sciences. First of all, how badly will my 6 look if I have pretty good English/personal statements and a 3.83 GPA? So is it even possible to be accepted ANYWHERE with a 6?

And if I score better on the new 2015 MCAT, will my verbal reasoning score be overlooked? How will the new scores be compared with my old ones, like my PS and BS scores? Also, since I want to submit my application as early as possible, within the first two weeks of June, when is the latest I can take the new MCAT so that my scores will be considered with my application EARLY? In other words, when does begin the application review process? And what does it mean when applications are "verified"?
I also have to take spring quarter and summer classes so I cant binge study for the new MCAT.

Thanks guys!

1) A 6 is pretty lethal for MD programs, although some DO schools might be willing to cut you some slack considering your composite is 28. It depends what your goals are in the end.

2) It depends on the school, but generally you get one or 2 shots to redeem yourself. Make sure that you don't waste them and jump into the test unprepared, especially the 2015 MCAT as there is even more material to know.

3) That leads me to my third piece of advice, I would strongly consider taking a gap year to get all your ducks in a row, with ample time to kill the new MCAT. (Unless of course you are going DO, in which case, best of luck!)

My friend had roughly similar stats ( GPA 3.7, 32 MCAT), good personal statements/secondary responses and good extracurriculars and had to reapply. Tea guzzling traveler is correct on points 1, but regarding 2, I took the MCAT three times and got 3 interviews and 1 acceptance. Regarding 3, I would argue good to great extracurriculars could offset the MCAT score and make it worth applying this year.

verification is AMCAS checking grades and MCAT scores (i believe) against official documents. once verified, primary is sent to schools selected

So I think I will have to retake in June or July, then, and hopefully the new MCAT will do me justice. I was doing fine on the practice AAMCs I dont know what happened for this VR section...
