I've been taking the EK practice exams at the end of each book throughout my studies. By far, I feel the physics is the worst. I don't feel strong on the last half of physics, mainly due to the practice exams. Anyone else have this problem? I just took two back to back in gen chem, and scored an average of 9. Haven't taken a real exam yet, but I plan to start those this week (test date is January 8). What is everyone else's general impression of EK practice exams versus real MCAT? I may take AAMC test 3 today or tomorrow untimed, since I hear it is the easiest of them all.

The practice passages at the end of the book aren't too similar to what most have written about the current MCAT. They're still okay for practice before moving onto AAMC material or better material in general.

Are they more difficult? I took a practice test in the verbal 101 book, and scored a 6. I just took a 30 minute exam in the verbal book and scored a 5. My test is January 8. I'm freaking out. Is there anyway to improve my score before my test significantly? I'm hoping EK is just more difficult than the actual exams.

Only take AAMC practice test scores seriously. Use non-AAMC for practice but not for the scores.

Well I just received a 22 on my first real timed test from AAMC. I got a 9 on physical science, and last time I got a 10. I desperately need to review biology, and verbal I am just distraught about. I got a 6. No idea what to do there other than keep taking 1-2 verbal exams from my EK book each night.

Do you happen to have the AAMC self-assessments? I really like EK, but those end-of-book exams for the science chapters just aren't representative for a couple of reasons: 1) they're too short to properly cover more than a couple of topics within each concept and 2) their scoring system is kind of weird. Basically, keep doing them to make sure you're retaining knowledge from the chapters, but my advice is not to score them at all.

As for verbal, I agree with many others about the EK 101 Passages book - they're very different from AAMC passages. They tend to be shorter, more conversational, and more "word-for-word" (as in, they contain fewer of the tough application/inference-based questions). Since you don't have a ton of time, maybe you could get the verbal SA instead and break it up into chunks of 4-5 passages? Then, at least most of your practice will resemble what you'll see on practice exams.

In general, is it possible to raise a verbal score from a 6 in about a month? It'll be tough, but absolutely not impossible in your case for a couple of reasons. First, that was your first timed AAMC exam. If you were averaging a 6 on your first few tests, that would be a different case, but you truly can't get an idea of where you stand until you've taken at least one or two more. Spend the next month analyzing the AAMCs above all else, and you'll give yourself the best chance at a big score jump 🙂

Good luck!

Thanks so much for taking time to respond! I heard the self-assessment is pretty good. What is it actually?

As for verbal reasoning, just took one for practice in my EK 101 passages book and scored another 6 and ran out of time (due to distractions at home). I plan to take another timed test tomorrow morning. I noticed on my last exam, I also began to run out of time and got all but two questions wrong on the last two passages. I supposed practice will build my endurance.

I have been continuing with the EK verbal, since that is what I have. I took a friend's advice and tried to analyze each passage. Just finished with a score of 8, and was one (stupid) question away from getting a 9. I still timed myself for each passage and collectively, went over by about 3 minutes. For me, this is an improvement and encouragement. I intend to try another passage later without any stops.
