I thought it would be nice to have a discussion board for MCAT topics/questions causing trouble for those studying for the MCAT.

Here goes my first one:

Paramagnetism vs. Diamagnetism:

-Diamagnetism
substance attracted to inducing magnetic field due to UNPAIRED ELECTRONS

-Paramagnetism
Substance repelled due to ALL PAIRED electrons

Question: Why is Sulful Diamagnetic and Not Iron?

Diagmagnetic species contain no unpaired electrons while paramagnetic species do contain at least one unpaired electron.

Therefore, both iron and sulfur are paramagnetic because sulfur has unpaired electron in its p-orbital and iron has unpaired electrons in its d-orbital.
