It's hard to explain through words. Mevalonate loses a carbon in a decarboxylation to form compound 3. The labeled CH3s with the asterisks are the carbons you want to follow. If you label all the carbons with the asterisks starting with reaction #2, you can clearly count the carbons.
 
Always number your carbons in mechanisms. That helps you see what bonds are being formed and where.
