hi, quick question: is the photo for the mcat supposed to be a professional one or can it be a regular, casual photo? Thanks.

As long as the picture is clearly of you, it doesn't matter. I used a black/white picture of me that I printed off of my computer.

so I guess it is only for when you send in your secondaries that you include a professional photo?

I know a guy who forgot to bring a photo. He ended up cutting up his driver's license and using that photo.

They really don't care what it looks like, just find something. I printed one out of my printer at home.

I forgot mine last August, so I taped my student ID card to the ticket 😀 There's no way I'm forgetting this time.

Most of my friends and I went for the mugshot variety: scared ****less or stone cold expression, pallid complexion, hair disheveled. I like to call it "MCAT avant garde."

Seriously, though, as long as it's a 2x2 and you are recognizable (no baby pics, sorry 🙁 ) you'll be fine.

The real stress will come when it's time to select a picture for secondary applications. Because you know that whether overtly or subconsciously, the way you look will have a HUGE impact on that decision.

Mine was just me sitting on my couch with a hooded sweatshirt on and a big smile (yes, for some reason I looked super excited to take the MCAT). I just printed it off the computer and taped it on the ticket.

I'll be getting better ones (i.e. printed off wallets) for the secondaries that I need to send in.

my photo was an edited one of myself at a bar piss drunk, and you could see a beer in the background. My smile was put together well enough that you could only tell that I was drunk if you knew me.

I got my score back and it's done, so apparently it did not matter.

I'm not planning on using that picture on secondaries

nah, you don't need a professional photo on the secondaries, unless the school specifies it. My friend got into a few schools using a picture of herself at a party. It was a nice picture, but not professional.

For those who used photos that they printed off the computer. . did you use regular paper or photo paper?

I remember reading that they send the picture to the med schools you apply to.

I used one of my little high school graduation photos (they are about four years old). I noticed on test day that my eyes look brown in the photo..... my eyes are green in real life (and always have been). I have heard that they send the photo to the school that you matriculate at (another check to make sure that you really took the MCAT and really got the scores that you got).

Just use the regular paper. All it is doing is being used so that the MCAT people know who you are.

Hmmm...I used the same picture for my MCAT admission ticket and my secondaries. It's not the best picture ever (passport-like, shoulders and above), but I am smiling (that seems like a good thing 🙂 ). Hopefully that works out alright.
