Hello everyone,

I have recently graduated from my highschool and have been enrolled into bachelors of nursing. I plan to go onto becoming a physician after i have completed nursing. The reason i have chosen this path is because 1) In my opinion, i believe that nursing will give me the exposure to the medical field and allow me to shadow a doctor, and 2) It is a great back-up if i do not get into med-school. Anyway, in order to enrol into med-school, many require the MCAT. So i was wondering how can i study for the MCAT because after researching nursing, the courses do not really prepare u for general MCAT (recommended) pre-reqs. Is there anyway for me to study the recommended courses such as Physics, Chemistry etc while doing Nursing; or perhaps summer courses? I know it will be hard, but one cannot simply achieve something without sacrifice and hard work. I really appreciate any/all suggestions you guys offer.

Thanks

one doesn't make sense. You shouldn't choose a major just to have access to someone to shadow. It's not tough to find a doctor to shadow. Two makes some sense, but you are setting yourself up for failure with that mentality. You shouldn't prioritize your backup plan over your primary plan. Majoring in nursing will not help you get into med school. If I were you, I'd shoot for med school, and complete a nursing degree if the primary plan fails. Choose a major that will interest you and challenge you, so that you can sharpen your critical thinking skills.

I agree with the above post to an extent - while being a nursing student/nurse will obviously allow you to interact with doctors, it's not the only way and it's not difficult to find a doctor to shadow as an undergraduate student. That being said, as an undergrad shadow, you won't get to do anything hands on with the patients and you'll be a silent observer. As a nurse, you'll gain the hands on access that you wouldn't otherwise have as just a shadow.

Nursing curriculum doesn't require you to take most of the MCAT or med school prereqs as far as I know, besides maybe Chem (I think they have to take a simplified versions of many of these classes). You will, however, be taking classes like Microbio and A&P, so you'll still be preparing for the MCAT and med school. You'd have to take Orgo, Physics, etc on your own as electives, which could be a little tough considering an already science-heavy courseload.
