I'm thinking about getting a head-start on my MCAT preparation by getting a private tutor (from Princeton Review, probably). For those that have gotten private tutoring: what were your experiences? Was it worth it? I'm planning on really working on Verbal Reasoning skills and mastering that. Anyways...any feedback from people who have gone the tutoring route would be highly appreciated. Thank you.

Pretty much a waste of time and money. Just get some review books and head to the library and work your butt off. You will be fine. The results will reflect your effort, not money spent on some third party who is trying to make a buck off of you, or, more likely, your parents.

Verbal is probably the least teachable. If anything, physical sciences is the most worthwhile to get a tutor for.

I am a private tutor for Princeton Review for MCAT biology. Honestly, I have no idea why people do it. Its a ton of money, and I'm glad they pay me a lot, but I don't think its worth the money.
I do think the courses are worth it. I got a lot out of mine.

Verbal might actually be one that you would want to get tutored for... It's the least intuitive, and least volume of information associated...

TPR has some excellent programs...

Isn't it like $3000 for 25 hours of private tutoring? I didn't really think people did that. I thought they put it on their website to make their classes look cheaper.

If you're really set on a private tutor, it would be cheaper to just ask a person directly rather than going through a company. Maybe someone who's been accepted to med school but hasn't started yet, who did really well on the MCAT and has a lot of tutoring experience.

i dunno man..i wouldn't do it...i'm not doing it. Cash is an issue for me but even if i had the money i still wouldn't do it. This is the time to man up, lean in, and become independently resourceful!!! Would it be nice to have some joker sitting in the corner of my room and every time i get hung up on some strange concept ask him for immediate clarification?...you bet... but i almost think it could be counter productive...at least for me... I am constantly on here asking ?'s, googling crazy topics to get a diff angle, running through youtube videos trying to make visual sense of that concept which is destroying me, and calling friends who are also on this same journey...I mean, tenacity and motivation have got to be on the inside of ya...not on the outside... I'm not saying your not motivated etc, you seem very motivated bc you want to get a "head start" and get a jump things-thats awesome-i just wouldn't want someone holding my hand and i sure wouldnt want to develope the habit of having someone spoon feed me cause they sure as hell aren't going to be there sept 10 when i show up, get in the ring, and kick this things ass!!!!---good luck to you whatever you do, but again, id save the cash😎

I'm hoping to take my MCAT next April and plan to use this time to prep on my own versus getting a tutor. I figure instead of investing in tutoring, I'm going to invest in the Berkeley review...the whole set will cost about $281 with shipping.

If you are not self-disciplined on your own, a tutor might not be a bad idea. However, if you can force yourself to sit down and tackle a little bit every day, just do it on your own.
