I am one month from graduating from McGill. Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy!!!
Sorry, my senioritis just kicked into overdrive.
So, yes, McGill. Well, where to start? I am from Arizona and I basically went to McGill for adventure. I definitly got it. Montreal is an amazing city (though I have developed a love-hate relationship with it after four years) with people from all over the world. When I say this, I don't mean you might have one or two foreign students in your class, I mean in many classes, half the class may be from a different country and walking down the street in Montreal you can easily hear more than five different languages within the span of 3 minutes. It really makes a more worldly person and, in my opinion, makes you a lot more mature than people who have gone the more traditional route. Not to mention, with the 18 year old drinking limit, you are an adult in Montreal...something a lot of Americans have a bit of a tough time handling from the school end.
McGill as a school: I am sure your friend knows that McGill has a great reputation...so as far as being up there with a Hopkins or a WashU it definitly is. Academically, it is very challenging...so if your friend is looking for easy A's in say, pre-med. requirements, McGill would not be their place. There is also a really amazing range of areas he/she could study...seems a lot more varied than US schools. But, your friend should also keep in mind that programs at McGill tend to be very focused, especially in science. If you want a broad education you really have to pursue it yourself. It is possible. Myself, I did an English lit major, Anthropology and Biology minors.
Also, on the downside, it is large and many of the classes are very large. It definitly takes some getting used to. However, the campus itself is fairly condensed, so you see your friends throughout the day and that sort of thing.
I just realized how long this thing is getting...maybe you should PM me for more information, but bottem line on McGill: while it has been difficult to go here in some respects and the adjustment was hard, it has been an incredibly rewarding experience which I would highly recommend. I really feel that I have grown in ways which would have never been possible at another school.
Also, I am not 100 grand in debt. You can't beat the tuition and living expenses of going to McGill, which is essentially like attending an ivy league school for 1/4 the price.
