Where would you go for med school? Reputation, cost, geography, residency match....etc....

A cornell--rockefeller, sloan kettering, match list, awesome neighborhood, awesome students.

better than Montreal? Price? What about reputation solely. I am not a fan of the upper east side. NYU is in a great neighborhood, but what about repuation compared with the other 2?

I think the repuation is better at Cornell, but not better for geting NYC residencies. Just the ones outside of NYC from cornell were competitive specialties at the Brigham, UCSF, Mass Gen, Stanford, and Penn. When I was interviewing, those that interviewed at Cornell also had interviews at Columbia, Penn, Harvard, etc. We all did. I interviewed at MSSM. I had many interviews so I cancelled my NYU one. I think better than Montreal. If I were to chose two it would be NYU or Cornell because of the east coast centric focus of many of the residencies. However, McGill is an awesome school as well as NYU.

Of course, Cornell >>>>> NYU >> McGill

Hands down to Cornell. If you have an acceptance from Cornell, then there is no question you should even think of any other place.

NYU is also awesome but not as awesome as Cornell.

If you are Canadian and want to practice in Canada, then you might like McGill, and of course you need to know French to communicate with your patients in Quebec.

There is a $150,000 price differential between McGill and NYU/Cornell over 4 years and I have been told that McGill has a great repuation with an amazing match list. Obviously, if the other choices were Harvard, Hopkins, Columbia....the choice would be easier and might override the price issue. But I think the choice is more difficult with Cornell and NYU! What to do!!

I agree Cornell> NYU> McGill .

With the price differential I would say:

McGill>Cornell>NYU

McGill/Montreal is awesome! My brother studied there for a year and i went up to visit. I'd agree that Cornell has the best rep though.

Yes...Montreal is an amazing city....better qouality of life than New York and probably more culture (despite what New Yorkers might think). McGill has a great international rep and I think that you can pretty much go wherever you want for residency....

Mcgill>>Cornell>NYU There is no wrong choice here, they are all wonderful schools. Affordable is always nice, do you want to spend your early thirties paying back loans just so you can wear a Cornell shirt?

You sound like you would be happiest at McGill. If that is so, go to McGill.

I would say that Cornell has the best reputation and it is probably the most recognized here in the US, but McGill and NYU are both really great schools. Would you rather live in new york or montreal? They are both awesome cities.

Tough decision... but all three of these schools are excellent, you can't really go wrong.

wait a second... in other threads you say that you finished med school at McGill... are you deciding where to go for residency? I'm confused.

😕

I am a resident in Boston. I went to med school in Canada, but not at McGill. Several of the undergrads working at the lab where I used to work in Boston are applying to medical school. All are applying to McGill as well as to schools in the states. One of them received admits at NYU, Cornell and McGill. They are asking for my advice given the fact that I have experience in both the U.S. and Canada (I am American though). I thought an additional way to give them advice would be to see how others on this site, who are going through the same process, feel about the decision.

What is the end goal -- if it's to practice in the US, then Cornell will take them further. It is a top 20 school with a solid rep, and is simply better regarded than the other two. I suspect if the goal is to practice in Canada, then McGill would be the strongest choice.

McGill is way above the ranks of NYU in terms of quality, reputation and prestige. Also, you can apply to US residencies out of McGill as I believe more than 70% of the students take the USMLEs.
