MCPHS Worcester Class of 2009 (merged threads)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I will take an additional private loan other than goverment loan. I have a couple of thousands in saving but I will be spending most of the money for moving cost. Also, I will try to find the least expensive room and work for a least two days a week to get some cash for food and mis $$. I am not trying to be scared by the cost for education in that it is an investment for better future, but IT IS SCARY~~

Hi All-
Just got packet from MCPHS with all orientation info. They noted it will be posted online July 9th, too. Lots of info/forms, incl white coat ordering form (Cangelili, it says info re ceremony to follow), dress code, service learning, and a Diabetes walk.
So, info is on the way to everyone... 🙂

Hey- I'm in OK and I got mine today along with my financial aid package which made me want to cry! I took out the max on loans and I'm left with $1200 to cover books, food, and everything until the start of second term. This is freaking rediculous! If you haven't applied for loans yet and need to- keep in mind that their living allotment is tiny!

I'm wondering how I'm going to afford anything! I'm on campus and was left with litterally pocket change to live on for four months. Do they realize that this school is not in the cheapest part of the country? The living allotment for students living off campus at Oklahoma University (where a nice apartment is aprox. $400) is the same as MCP allots us- crazy. Sorry I'm just a bit overwhelmed with how I'm going to survive.

Do you guys know what your student id is? If so, where did you get it?

I got everything today as well 🙂 I took a signature student loan as well to cover living expenses...School is going to be here before we know it!

Is every 1st year bringing a car so they can do the service learning and other required off campus stuff?

they will give you the ID during orientation if not the first week of school

Can someone clarify the breaks we have?

Seems like we have 4-5 weeks off during August.

How long are the other breaks?

How is the dorm at Worcester? I will live in six rooms dorm. Do they have a big refrigator, TV(in living room), and what else is there for us? I did not receive a list what to bring and not to bring for the DORM? anybody got any idea how the dorm is set up, what it has in there? Drugdealer? DrNiceGuy? Thank guys

The only amenities available for the dorms is a regular sized fridge (which is small for 6 people to share), stove and oven, showers and sinks. TV is on your own, but there is cable connection along with internet, heating (which is necessary for the winter) and A/C (which is great for the summer thus far). Basically, any and all appliances that you use for food processing is on you the resident. Thats right no dish washer either. But there are laundry machines in the basement. You need to bring full/queen sheets (unless you are in a single room, which you may need to have twin), pots, pans, dishes, and whatnot that you may need to survive for cooking on your own. Toiletries, etc. In terms of appliances, you may want to converse with your roommates and divide up on the appliances.

ON a side note, the summer break as of right now is 4-5 weeks and winter break is 3 weeks. There is a week break after the spring semester. However, there is talks that the summer semester (which is currently 10 wks long is going to change to 12 weeks and this will cut into our summer break)

Oven meaning microwave?

Wow, I was so happy about the 4-5 week summer break.

Don't they close down the dorms for certain breaks? They did that while I was an undergraduate.

oven/stove is available...but you would need to get a microwave oven, toaster, etc. If you are not planning to stay in the same room, you would need to vacate, but b/c this is an oncampus "apartment" housing, it stays open

Hey, all, just noticed that they finally posted the orientation schedule for Worcester! Check it out!

Looks like we'll be testing all day on day 2. Wonder what they'll be testing us on? At least we have one full weekend before school starts. We'll have to go out and have some fun before all of the work starts 😉

I see only one test - "Proficiency Exam". I think the other ones are just presentations, for example block schedule with testing.

Anyone else?

EDIT: Hmmmm. The "block scheduling with testing" is a couple hours. Maybe there is testing?

I was thinking that they were splitting us into 2 groups with 1 group testing in the morning and the other group testing in the afternoon. The only reason I thought that is because Manchester only has 4 hours of testing blocked off and we have 7 hours so I figured since we have more students they are going to split us in 2 groups.

Maybe it's just wishful thinking...my sister is getting married on Saturday so her rehearsal dinner is on Friday night (which i'll miss unless they are splitting us into 2 groups and I'm in the 1st)

Anybody know when we're gonna get our schedule and book list????

Congrats J&J's Vette....can't wait to meet all of you!

Hey Guys...Just noticed our fall semester book list is finally online!

EDIT: Just Kidding!! The link says fall semester but the list is still for the summer session!

For people arriving early/bringing family:

Holiday Inn Worcester is like ~$100/night.

Go buy an "Entertainment" book and when you book a hotel room on the holiday inn website pick the entertainment book rate.

I know that the entertainment books are really cheap right now because they are yearly and the new one will be out soon.

The rate is $59 a night.

You have to show them the card when you check in but they didn't check me when I interviewed back in January.

Taxi to MCPHS is ~$10 one way.

They also have a FREE shuttle (within 5 miles). They take you to the campus for free!!!

Also, how are the two airport shuttle companies from Boston Airport? Do they let you bring big bags for move in?

Anyone have parking info? Is it still $180/quarter?

How safe is it to park your car there for maybe a week without using it?

Hey all! I e-mailed the school about the incorrect book list coming up and the link and I just got an e-mail back that it is fixed! So the list is now posted for the fall. Just wanted to let everyone know!

Hi, all.
I am wondering who already bought all the books for fall classes?
Do we really need those big volume textbook? Because somtimes class materials the teacher will give us would be enough. Should I wait until the fisrt date of classes or buy the textbook right now?

I have the same biochemistry book but it is the 3rd edition, not the 4th. I didn't really read it in college. Hope to make use of it...

You will need the physio, all public health books, biochem (sometimes for background info, but may need it moreso in the spring semester), calculations book can be shared between people.

I ordered them all online, but I always used my textbooks in undergrad so I bought them all.

Hi Cangelilli,

Which website did you order your books from? Did you research for the best price or maybe that's not practical for availability & possible discount on shipping? Thanks for the input!

Also, to all the females in our class, how are you dressing for orientation? Business casual or a suit or a dress? I just would like to feel comfortable with my attire and curious as to what everyone is wearing. Thanks guys, see you soon!

Hey Guys...I bought all my books as well and ordered most of them from half.com. I compared the prices to those listed on the tatnuck website and I saved about $275. All but two of the books are brand new. I haven't recieved any yet but I'll let you guys know how it works out.

I got my books on half.com as well and saved money too, although the books were a lot of money overall. I always get my textbooks through there, it is quick and easy. Just make sure you check peoples ratings before buying from them. For orientation I figured business casual, dressy capri pants, dress sandals and a nice shirt. Is that what everyone else was thinking? Good luck!

Hi, all. I really need your help.
Does anyone know how I can get to MCPHS(Worcester) from Boston.
I am seriously worried about this.
I have some luggages that I will carry and I already had many of my stuffs at storage room near MCPHS. But I do not know how I can get there without a car from the airport at Boston. What is worse, I have no idea how I can carry all my sttufs from storage room to dorm. I want to pay someone who help me for all this, but I even don't know where I can find such a person.
Where MCPHS students put thier post for rent, used books or whatever we need there?
Thanks in advance. Thank you guys.

You can take the commuter train for cheap. You can bring luggage but I don't know if you have a lot. You must take a bus from the airport and then get on this train.

Also, you can take an airport shuttle (www.wlimo.com) This costs about $50.

any asian guy going to worcester fall 2006 for pharmd?

I have a question about Orientation. What they going to test us on "Block Scheduling with Testing "

I just got a letter and it said Packets for courses and it cost $85, what is that? is that the NOTES for pharmacist classes? they said we pick it up at Orientation? so what it is?

I'm guessing it's the notes/slides/powerpoint stuff etc. As a person who is currently taking Orgo II and spends most of her time frantically copying notes off the chalkboard (instead of actually learning it) b/c the prof is afraid of technology, I'm SO HAPPY to spend the $ on this. THRILLED!

🙂

Wish I had known about this site when I started at Worcester. Dropped by to say hi and that I am an Asian guy. I am so happy to finish the first year in this crazy hard program. I wanted to welcome all you p1's the best of luck and great memories here. Block Scheduling is just splitting the class up for the Computerize Grammar test, which is just to see where you are at in your reading skills, the results do not affect any of your classes. Pharmforme is correct, the course packets are all the notes/PowerPoint slides for all your first semester classes, which are needed to follow the lecture in class.

Thanx for your warm welcome. Just want to hear a second opinion regarding the textbook. What books do we need to buy according to your experience? If the course packets are well organized, I really don't want to buy any of them as I didn't buy most of books when I was in undergraduate. Anyways, hope I will be able to survive in the crazy hard program.

Rxsticker, thanks for your post! Any hints for us newbies? I'm curious, how many people didn't make it thru year 1 due to academic reasons? Any advice is appreciated...I think we're all so nervous we'll take all we can get!

Ya know, all of us entering P1 should try to get together and meet in a few weeks before classes start. Whaddya think everyone? When would that be feasible to do (since many are moving here)?

I bought all the required books (none of the suggested ones), and I actually read all the assigned readings for each. It helps to clarify the notes, since they are just abbreviated thoughts and highlights, as well as to clarify things the professors say but you don't quite catch. I need complete, organized thoughts before I can use the highlighted lists and stuff in the course packets.

It is your choice to not buy the textbooks, but I bought all of them. The books that you defiantly need are Calculation and all the Public Health books.

I am moving up next weekend and would love to get together with whomever before orientation! Any advice to a new person in the area would be greatly appreciated too! Thanks so much for all of the comments!

I'll be up there on move-in day. And it's a holiday weekend, so I'm definitely up for hanging out.

Hi.

I will be attending MCP (manchester campus)!

DrugDealer or DrNiceGuy or Rxsticker, do you guys know about the refrigerator policy? it said no greater than 2.7cu.ft...I am planning to get a 4.4Cu.Ft. refrigerators because i think 2.7 is so tiny, do you think people will come to the dorm and check it like measure it? I think 4.4 is perfect size for one person
