I get DSL from AT&T along with my landline. The DSL was running a special for $13.00 a month (plus taxes) when I started last year. (Yes, the landline is additional). Reminds me, I've got to call and get the new special. They'll just let it run out on you and start charging you the official rate around $30.00 if you don't watch them. It's a pain in the patootie dealing with AT&T's bureaucracy to get set up, but once it's set, it just runs and you can start taking it for granted. And the price is right.

My wife, a Froedtert employee, just joined WAC and I think the med student rate is the same as Froedtert employees, like $40 per month. It is a great facility.
 
just unloaded $400 on train tickets from London to Paris (round trip for two). That's almost as much as my plane tickets to Vegas. Had to get them overnighted by FedEx, because I had kinda figured (like plane tickets) that you could print your own, or at least get them at the "will call" at the train station. Guess not. And we didn't have my wife's passport until Thursday, so I didn't get around to shopping for the train tickets until yesterday....the tickets will arrive at 10:30am (guaranteed) on Wednesday - we're leaving for O'Hare by 1pm or so.


And I had a dream that Splat, Funk and I had a conversation, breaking the agreement.
 
I feel like the only one asking questions! I have two other roommates for the fall and we are looking for 3 bedroom housing. Are there duplexes around the school? So far, I've found that the Reserve, Bluemound Village, and Mayfair Manor have 3 bedrooms. Any ideas from the locals?

there was a flyer posted on some of the bulletin boards for an M4 renting out a 3BR (house, I think) near 80th and Hampton (10 minutes from school) for a grand per month.

Some lecturers don't use the book at all, and some of them use parts of it. If they haven't sent you anything in the mail yet, they will.

Sadly no. I am a dark blue belt in Taekwondo. I will be testing for my red belt in June. So, if I continue Taekwondo in medical school I have about a year left before I could test for my 1st degree black. I really need to post a new picture. I promise my side kicks are much better than that.

If you're anxious, start with DNA replication, and go on to transcription, translation, and all that jazz. The citric acid cycle is also a sure bet. But please note that I am the only person I know who did ANYTHING to pre-study for Biochem and I came SEVERAL POINTS short of a high pass. As far as I can personally determine, all pre-studying does is make you feel like you're doing something and also waste your precious pre-med-school leisure time.

There are several 3-BR duplexes, especially a bit to the north of the school (say 1-3 miles away). Most do not advertise a whole lot outside of flyers at the school. My neighborhood seems to be mostly 2-BR, so I'm not seeing anything useful to you when I go on my short little runs. I may be going in to campus to work out some time in the next couple of weeks. Do you want me to jot down numbers for you?

Fixed for you. If you can still return it for the full refund I'd be saving the receipt. That book is the definition of overkill.

so i got this packet that includes a form for immunizations... do we just fill that out with the dates we had our immunizations and have our doctor sign it, or do we give in a copy of our old immunization record, or both? and on the physical form, there is a section about immunizations too... there is a box labeled "immunity testing" which includes measles, rubella, varicella, and hep b-- do we have to have titers drawn or is just handing in our immunization record fine? and if we have to have titers drawn-- if we have had them drawn within the last year is that acceptable? thanks!!

If your doctor signs off on your list of immunizations, you're good. No titers needed unless you can't show that you've had the shots.
 
I think I sent in a copy of my immunizations record, in addition to sheets with my Ab titers, but that's only because I had access to them from work. I don't remember what the sheets were like to fill out, I just know I spent a lot of time working on it.
 
craigslist has been the best source for housing in the milwaukee area. i currently live in milwaukee and used it to find my housing for next year. it's better than calling each of the places with a "for rent" sign since it could be days before they call you back to even let you how much they cost. you can filter by price as well as number of bedrooms. most of the landlords at places i toured mentioned that they frequently rented to MCW students or had MCW neighbors.

also, the Marquette campus has two gyms that have better rates for MCW students than Marquette alumni. i called today and remember that the rates were really cheap, cheaper than the WAC (WI athletic club), but cant remember exact numbers. i want to say about $50 per semester (yes, semester) where summer, fall and spring are the three semesters of the year. here are the numbers for the two gyms if i dont get back to you with exact membership rates. i've been going to the rec plex for 3 years and have loved it. it also has a parking lot in back where (i believe) the rec center does not.

At the YMCA, if you bring in your financial aid paperwork, you can get the poor-people rate. I've heard as low as $25/month.
 
Just a quick question...I am coming down in a few weeks to look for apartments and have calls in to see The Reserve, Serafino Square, and Normandy Village...is there any others that would be worth while to take a look at?
 
I would also suggest Wilshire Manor, if you don't have any pets. It doesn't have a pool and stuff like the other complexes, but it is a nice building walking distance from school and Tosa village.

And if you don't care about living in a large managed building, don't forget about the flyers at the school, driving around looking at signs, and the newspaper. And craigslist.

my wife recommends Mayfair Manor - it's apparently $600/month for a large 2BR with a relatively large kitchen (with dishwasher - my wife's jealous) and living room. It's in a quiet neighborhood, maybe 110th and North, according to her. Serafino is gorgeous, but we couldn't afford that.
 
Prowler is *almost* right: $630 a month for a large 2BR with a large kitchen, with dishwasher, and living room. Choice between carpet and hardwood floors. Corner of 111th and Meinecke.

And at least three knowledgable fourth years as neighbors!

I haven't found any, but whatever internet stuff you need to do can (usually) be accomplished on a hospital computer.

The VA is a little more restrictive, but you can watch You Tube and other stuff at Froedtert.

Ask this question again in about a month and a half. When the rising M3's have their scores.

I think MCW does a good job overall, although there are some courses that do a better job than others. We have a pass rate and average score around (or maybe slightly better than) the national average.

That being said, how you do on the boards also depends on you. No school will guarantee you a high score. I think here we set you up to do pretty well. The rest is up to you.
 
Just wanted to thank all of you for answering all of my questions over the past few months. I withdrew my acceptance to MCW on Friday and will be attending IUSM. Good luck to everyone at MCW and thanks again for everything.
 
has anyone else received their financial aid award? i just got mine today... it says the budget is 50,105... and then lists my award as 8500 in subsidized stafford loans and 34222 in unsubsidized stafford loans... for a total of 42722. then it tells me i can only request 12,000 in unsubsidized stafford loans, and if i plan on borrowing more, then i need to make an appt with a counselor during orientation week... and it says that info on grad plus loans will be available at orientation. i am just really confused because the other schools i was accepted at didn't limit you to 12,000 and they also listed grad plus loans as part of your award and didn't make you wait until orientation to get info about it.... is this how mcw works or is it just my award?? why do i have to wait until orientation and why can i only request 12000 in unsubsidized loans? i am so confused!!

They limit it every year, and you have to go in and talk to the fin aid people to get more money. I don't take out any more than the stafford sub and unsub stuff, so I'm glad it's not a part of the whole deal. But it never covers my whole budget. There are specific times set aside to make appts to go talk to the fin aid people at orientation.
 
You will be able to request more in unsub Stafford loans when you have your financial aid meeting. All will be well.

i just had the weirdest EMS assignment of all time...someone contracted our service to take his daughter to a wedding where she was to be a bridesmaid. Her medical condition has deteriorated to the point where she can't tolerate sitting in a wheelchair, so she stayed on our ambulance stretcher the whole time...which meant we had to be right by her side so long as she was on the stretcher...which meant my partner and I were pretty much part of the wedding party when we took her down the aisle. I think we got in a bunch of the photos. Go us!

but seriously...i felt like this was one of those jobs where we actually made a difference...you could tell having this girl there meant the world to the bride. once again studying for the boards seems insignificant in comparison. (cue the "med school was the wrong choice for me" emotions)

pretty much just by learning the material in your courses, but there are some little mini "preparing for boards" seminars you can attend during 2nd year.

seriously, seriously, seriously, and i think this is MORE important than not studying this summer....DO NOT WORRY ABOUT BOARDS UNTIL YOU ARE DONE WITH M1 YEAR. It's like a finger, pointing to the moon...don't concentrate on the finger, or you will miss all that heavenly glory.

Then you get the people who spend the summer after M1 year studying while doing research. I'd say don't worry about the boards until start of M2 year when Lesley Mack tells you, you all'd better pass.

they were cousins, fairly close i would guess. at first it seemed like a weird and inconvenient assignment, but based on everyone's reactions to her being there it really made my day. The downside was my partner ended up wearing my nicer uniform shirt which I keep as a spare because her's got puked on by an OD patient earlier in the day. so i was stuck in my casual non-wedding-appropriate polo.

we were standing on the brides's side, so we had to wear EMS bridesmaids' dresses. luckily my partner was a female so she was spared the embarrassment. though I did feel quite pretty in mine as well.

they had cargo pockets on the skirts and a utility belt for my radio and stuff.

Hi Pinkcolls. I guess we're in the same boat, except that they calculated a budget of $50,505 for me, and that's not including health insurance. Also, the total award of $42,722 doesn't cover my estimated need (= budget-resources). I guess we should consider the GradPlus loans and hopefully any institutional aid.

By the way, do you guys have any suggestions regarding the preferred lenders (Edamerica, US Bank, T.H.E). Looking at the comparison sheet on the Financial Aid's website, I think that Edamerica looks like the best choice (more incentives), unless I'm missing something. Did you guys also consider Medloans from AAMC? It's tempting, but not that popular among med students. Any insight? Thanks.

yeah i figured i'd use gradplus loans, but i was just confused that they didn't list that in my award like my other financial aid letters did. i thought for a minute that i did something wrong or that for some reason i couldn't use those and that i wouldn't have enough money for school!! i understand everything now though. I also think that Edamerica looks best.
