anyone going to Medical College of Wisconsin in August? If so, have you thought about what part of Milwaukee is a nice place to live?

What's wrong with Wauwatosa? After living in California I can't wait to be out of traffic where the cost of living is reasonable.

nothings wrong with Wauwatosa...but personally I enjoy living in cities where I can have a somewhat active social life...plus there's alot more options downtown if your willing to drive 15-20 minutes to class

going to mcw, looking for a house in kenosha (unfortunately).
my future wife works in the chicago suburbs, so we have to split the distance.

Here's my take: You know you're going to be on campus every weekday and some weekends. Class starts as early as 8:00. I'm not sure what a "social life" is in medical school but if it's going to concerts, having a drink at a bar, reading a book in a coffee shop, my thinking is that most of those can be done close to the school and those that can't will be much more infrequent than attending class. Basically, make the commute into Milwaukee when you want to see the Bucks play unless your priority is something other than medicine then make attending lecture and studying your secondary consideration and live downtown.

WOW....that's GREAT advice...I never realized i'd actually have to study in MED SCHOOL....thanks a bunch for helping me get my priorities straight!!!

Well, I live in Milwaukee and moreover 10 minutes from MCW. I've been living here for 3 years now. From my experience (although I'm not in the school yet, but hope😀 ) Wauwatosa is the best choice to live if you go to MCW. It's a nice old small town. Another option would be Brookfield (it connects to Wauwatosa by eastern part). If you want a lot of activity (though doubt that you'll have time and energy for it) Eastside of Milwaukee is your choice. All the activities are going on there. But anyway you have to understand that it is `10-15 minutes of driving almost from anywhere to downtown.
By the way, could you tell me about the interview process at MCW? How was it? What did they ask?

the interview process was very relaxed. I had two interviews, one with a student and one with a physician who was on the admissions committee. The student interviewer focused primarily on my experiences and how they had influenced me on my decision to become a physician. With the physician interviewer, the conversation focused primarily on US healthcare policy vs. other countries, problems with US healthcare, ect. Both interviews were very relaxed. I didn't go to the social the night before or the lunch.

I currently live in Milwaukee and work at MCW and if you are looking to have a social life I would recommend NOT living in Wauwatosa! I live on the east side of Milwaukee and its a 15-20 drive to work--not bad at all. If I were to go to MCW for med school I would definitely stay put...the east side has great bars, shopping, and coffee shops and restaurants on Brady St and North Ave all within walking distance, plus you can live right on Lake Michigan by the park with a beach and marina for a relatively cheap price compared to other cities (I only pay $400 a month which includes a parking space but I do have a roomate). The only drawback that I could think of would be the fact that the majority of your classmates would probably live by MCW, so in terms of socializing with them you might feel left out. I don't know. But personally I would be happier living downtown. Wauwatosa kind of sucks if you ask me.

MCW hasn't gotten back to me for over 3 months.. ugh.... still waiting for interview... ??.?
