Just out of curiosity, when did all you guys interview, since it already looks like we have some people who went through it together. I did mine on Jan. 20--the last round of straight-up acceptances 👍
We interviewed late September.

Funny story. I received the invite to interview on either Jan 20th or Feb 3rd. I received the email too late to call the office on Friday so I had to wait until Monday morning. However, I had a final exam starting at 7:45am on Monday (the office opens at 8am). My professor was nice enough to let me leave the exam for about 10 mins to make the call. I called first thing at 8am and was shocked to learn that the Jan 20th interview day was full. I regrettably had to settle for the 3rd. I was worried about this because I knew the cut off for "straight-up acceptances" was sometime in late Jan or early Feb. So, on Jan 2 I called the office hoping to see if there was an opening on Jan 20th. She told me to hold on for a second because she thought that a spot had just opened on Jan 6. She asked if I would be able to make that date and I, being only an hour away, said of course. Thinking back, I doubt that I would have called to schedule an earlier interview if I had got the Jan 20th spot.

Okay, now I'm just trying to bump up my post count...

Do any of you class of 2009 guys remember when you received your financial aid packet? I've made my final decision to attend MCW, but some people use this information to make their decision prior to the May 15th date. Thanks.

Also bumping the post count w/a similiar story. I interviewed at UW the day I got my MCW invite. During interview season I checked my email frequently, but I didn't that day because of the interview and a little partying thereafter. When I called Mon. morning, the Jan. 20 slot was also full so I had to settle for Feb. 3. However, I had called them back because I had National Guard drill that weekend and they switched me to the 20th. Only on the 20th did I find out that was the last day they were giving out spots. Considering I only ended up on the waitlist at UW, that phone call to reschedule pretty much saved me a year!

Yeah, the budget is stingy. Stupid double occupancy thing. That's not even all that accurate anyway. Many people I know with roommates still pay more than $550 because it's for rent AND utilities. On the other hand though, the other budgets, like food, supplies, clothing, etc., I think are par for the course. I should probably just ignore posts that talk about the budget, cuz if you look back through the thread, I get bitter everytime it's mentioned. It's not that you can't make the budget work, but it's that they want to have you borrow as little as possible (and understandably so), but I think that it should be my decision as a 24-year old as to how comfortably I want to live. Plus, the budget hasn't changed in many years regardless of inflation and gas prices that have tripled.

But I could go on and on... so don't listen to me.

Oh and disclaimer: this is the ONLY thing I don't like about MCW.

Moving out here late too screwed me up because a lot of cheaper places were taken. I like the Reserve, but living here by myself is a bit expensive.

Timing is everything. There are a lot of $650 2-bedrooms right now if you aren't picky about closet space and bedroom size. I am, so I spent a bit more. I'll just need to find a roommate who loves closet space and a quiet street as much as I do.

Ashers said:
Agreed. Getting in on 12 July and moving out here on 29 July from Hawaii made it even harder. =)

YIKES! I ran into a friend last August who got into a med school in Chicago a week before orientation. And he had a house to sell in Milwaukee, too. But he was still pretty happy.

So how is everyone coming with the whole apartment thing. Frankly, I haven't even started since we still have a month of school left. Also, this has been asked before, but when does the roommate list (or whatever it is) come out?

Nice. Where in Oregon? I'm from a suburb of Portland called Aloha. We might have to bring out some Portland microbrews for everyone that likes beer! Have you already moved out here?

Mundel-I am not sure if anyone else from our interview date in Sept. got in...I am sure they did, but I didn't know anyone personally. Hope the new place is settling in. My fiancee and I got a house in Wauwatosa so let me know if you need anything (I know moving is a pain!)

June 1, June 15, June 29, July 8, and July 22.

This is from the Roommate Questionnaire, available on the Web site HERE

Yeah. I've actually been out here for awhile doing research, but we just moved to Wauwatosa last month. Milwaukee is a nice city and the summer is supposed to be awesome! Just waiting for all the financial aid stuff so I can figure out finances for next year.

Sounds good, are you doing your research at MCW? I start research there the end of this month.

Hey everyone. I was right there with Ashers on getting out here late. I was on my way to Ros Franklin to sign a lease on July 7 when Mike Itswan called. We had gotten to Kenosha, and we gonna stop to eat when he called. So we ate and turned the car around. Luckily, I was staying with a friend in Milwaukee for those couple days, so it was really convenient in that respect. So I went in the next day, picked up paperwork, then drove around for a place to live. Unfortunately, pretty much everything had been picked over at that point. I looked at one place on Watertown plank, but he was asking $565 for a TINY place, with some things that really should be fixed, and one closet about the size of kitchen cupboard. I have a large collection of clothes, so that really wouldn't work too well! Plus, no utilities and no parking, which would be a problem because you can't park on the street overnight in Tosa. I knew there was no way I could afford the Reserve, even though I love those apartments, so we then went over to Normandy. A bit more expensive, though not as much as Reserve, but heat is included, and my apartment is good sized, lots of closet space, and a storage space in the basement. So that's where I live now.

I am shopping around right now for a new place. Normandy is nice, and I like my apartment, but it's a financial strain. So I'm looking around for the best price I can get without hopefully compromising on closet/storage space. I'm looking around school and downtown/east side. I don't go to class so the drive from the east side doesn't bother me.

Samenewme, congrats on finding what sounds like a great place! Good luck on the roommate thing.

Tiger, you're fine not looking yet. Looking in June usually works out okay, it's when you get to July that it really gets difficult.

Portland microbrews huh. Better bring one for me!!

So since a lot of you are out here already, who's gonna help me move when I find a fabulous place? I'll pay in beer...

I should mention, I have a dog so apartment-hunting gets a little more difficult.

Have a great day everyone!

How do you guys go around looking for a place. I am in Los Angeles and would like to move to milwaukee in July. I am interested in a one bedroom apartment.

It helps a lot to come out and visit and just drive around the neighborhoods. Lots of people just put up signs.

Also try:

Classified ads in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel
Info from MCW Housing Office Here
And go to MCW and check out the bulletin boards near the cafeteria.

I hope that helps! I got my best leads just driving around.

My biggest problem is cost. I don't know anyone in Wisconsin. For housing which areas do we look at. Milwaukee county, West, East, North etc. Thanks

Wauwatosa, West Allis, Milwaukee county west (including the City of Milwaukee). The school is at 8701 Watertown Plank Road.

Numbered streets in Milwaukee County run north/south and the numbering starts at 1st near the lake and goes up as you go west.

Just to mess you up, the Village of Wauwatosa has a few diagonal streets, a river, and a large park, all of which interrupt several of the major north-south streets and make a labyrinth of the whole village. Enjoy!

A good close-in grid is to be north of I-94 (though W. Allis is S. of I-94), west of, say, 50something street, east of 100something street (but keep an eye on Hwy 45, a major N/S thoroughfare west of 92nd street) south of (or close to) North Ave. Pick up a map at your local AAA office or something so you can see what I'm talking about. To my way of thinking, Brookfield is a little further west than you want to be.

Other tidbits: In "Tosa" (Wauwatosa), you need offstreet parking for yourself and your roommate (if you're going to try to get a roommate, which is my plan) because there is NO overnight street parking in Wauwatosa. My newly-rented apartment is on 62nd, between Bluemound Road and I-94, which happens to be Milwaukee, but I also have offstreet parking. If you're not from someplace cold, you'll probably be MUCH MUCH happier with covered parking. Digging out your car after a big snowfall is a pain in the patootie.

Do a Mapquest on any apartments you turn up, as apartments.com tends to include apartments (probably paying advertisers) in Whitefish Bay and Shorewood in Wauwatosa searches, though those to villages are ALL THE WAY ACROSS TOWN ON THE EAST SIDE.

I hope this helps. I grew up in the deep South, have been living on the east side of Milwaukee for the last ten years, and spent a full week of vacation from work apartment hunting in the wonders of Wauwatosa.

I lived on 185th most recently. Woohoo Aloha! I'm going to move in July probably. I'm thinking about using one of those "Pods" services. They beat UHaul's prices by half.

I'll have to pack some of our local beer and some HRD Vodka...the good stuff.

For those of you looking to move on/around June 1, I know of a nice 1 BR/1BA apartment (NOT mine) in Tosa within a short walk of MCW. It is in the Wilshire Manor apt complex at Harwood and Glenview (84th St). Open floor plan with a balcony. Monthly rent is approx $780 and underground parking is available for approx. $30/month. If you're interested, PM me and I'll try to get exact rent/parking numbers.

HRD vodka...damn with that classy stuff you must be getting your financial aid money early! They don't sell Widmer Bros. out here and I am definitely missing the old Hefeweizen! Have a safe move, let me know if I can answer any questions about the move out here from OR as I have already done it.

I shot you a message.

What is the average rents. I was looking at the budget for MCW and it allocated $ 5500 per year for housing. I am looking for something cheap and closer to school. Do they have a city bus that goes to school?

It really depends if you are gonna have a roommate. If you wanna live alone.. it can run you between 650-800 depending on if you wanna live in a big complex which tends to be more expensive. The 2br in the area tend to run between 800-1000. The best way to find a place near school is to check the boards at school and there are signs on Watertown for places for rent...i can snag a few number for ya if you need.

There is a city bus that will drop you off right in front of the building...but i dont know anyone that uses it (prob cause you have to change buses depending on where you live). However, there are quite a few people that bike into school 2-3 miles each way. Hope that helps!

I saw quite a few 2BR for under $800 during my week of apartment hunting, but most of them are a little short on closet space. Okay, most of them are a LOT short on closet space, and the bedrooms are 10X10, not so good for someone with a queen-sized bed. I rented a 2BR duplex lower for $775 about 3 miles from school. Don't have a roommate yet, though.

If you find a place right on Wisconsin Avenue (I saw several 2BR under $700) the #10 bus will take you right to campus. But be aware if you're too far east on Wisc. Ave (ca. 50th) you'll have parking problems during Brewers games.

My apartment notecards are a couple of weeks out of date, but if you want my phone numbers for the "also-rans", I'll send them to you. PM me.

Bus routes can be found at http://www.ridemcts.org, including a system map. Look for the western end of Route 10 to get oriented close to the school. Be aware that the route from North Ave to campus (32?) doesn't seem to go straight there. It looks like you have to get off the eastbound of one fork of the route and get on the westbound of the other fork of the route.

For any of you taking out the full budget offered by MCW, Does MCW offer you enough aid via federal and MCW loans to cover the full budget (tuition+living)? Or do you have to go out and find private loans?

I checked out www.UHaul.com and they quote something like 1700 dollars to move from Oregon to Wisconsin. Sweet jweezus. I'm pretty sure I could mail all my stuff for, at most, 1/2 that price. Anyone else from Oregon going my way and wann share a truck or something?

Hi. I take out every penny of loan they let me. For the 1st year, I was ~$100 short of the budget after all my federal, so it wasn't worth it to get private loan. However, I am a WI resident, so I get ~$5000 from the state too. If I remember right, you're not a WI resident? Maybe I got that wrong. Anyway, if you're out-of-state, you may need a private loan to fill out the entire budget. I had $1000 in institutional aid, and no Perkins loan, but I was also accepted off the waitlist, so other people may have gotten better aid then me. (it was all distributed before I got in).

For next year, I got much better aid. WI state money, $2000 need-based scholarship, $2000 perkins loan, $5000 WI medical society loan, and the rest federal.

Before getting in off the waitlist, I was planning on going to Ros Franklin. There budget is much higher, so I had a private loan all lined up. I was gonna use THE (I have them as my federal lender too). I recommend them, but I'm no expert!

Complete subject change: Why is it that the more expensive, really nice, white carpet style apartments will accept dogs, but the older homes broken into apartments with not as nice floors, kitchens, etc. will not accept dogs. I don't get it. If I was willing to spend $1000 per month for a 1br, just about every apartment in that range accepts a dog and I could have my choice. It sucks trying to find a deal. 👎

I've got a car I'm going to drive over. It isn't big enough to hold all of my stuff so that is why I want to have everything shipped.

I haven't set a date for moving yet but I want to stay here and work as long as possible. I suppose the last week of july is a good estimation. However, I want to have some time to get to know the area and the classmates.

I want to say it was 30 or 40 hours! I just mapquested from my house in Portland to the place I was moving to in WI and that worked great, you drive on I-90 FOREVER. We drove all day the 1st day and stayed the night in Butte, MT. Then we had enough and just drove straight the next day and night and got there on the third afternoon. I had someone with me though to switch on and off. If you start early you should be able to make it in three days if you stay 2 nights in hotels. We also stopped at Mt. Rushmore in S.D. which was well worth it...they light the heads up at night!

I'm gonna be checking fliers later on tonight at school, so I'll gladly pass on some info for ya. I'll pm you later. Off the top of my head I can think of a bunch with garage parking, but none of them are under $600 (they're all bigger complexes = $$$). Otherwise, in the meantime, I recommend checking JS online Here.

In general, housing is good here. The admissions office has a binder full of listings; they classify the binder by size, cost and availability. Its a good starting resource.
