My hearing is fine, you young whippersnapper! The problem is that kids today mumble!

I did not go to lecture today, actually. I didn't like the guy's style and felt the value added would be minimal compared to reading the notes and listening to his smarmy self-important self at double-speed.

Yeah, that should be awesome. Because only half the class can do the big 3 first, at least half the people doing everything else first will be disgruntled.



And I liked the forensics lectures. He cracks me up.
 
That just means that 75% of you chose (I'm guessing here) the track that has the elective in June. That means you could get your second choice. My track was the last choice of half the people on it, but my second choice, so I can't really complain.

I liked having "the other stuff" first.

I wish I'd followed directions and printed out my rankings. I can't remember now whether the track I got was my 9th or 10th choice. Either way, pretty funny.
 
The thing about tracks is that really, in the end, there is very little difference.

The one other piece of advice I have is to do a graded elective, no matter what. Because having three months off fourth year is sooooo sweet.

It can be you work with them a lot or not at all or anywhere in between.

I've worked with one of my friends during OB/gyn, family med, we were both at the dert on CPR (students don't usually work together on that), and for our 1st month of surgery. Unfortunately, we're getting split up, and he's going to the VA and I'm staying at the dert for the 2nd month of surg. He's really funny and laid back. Most of the people in my track (or in the A's), I'd have no problem working with.

varies. usually you're on a team with 2-3 other JMS's. just gotta play the odds. Remember if you're on the big three, there are more people you'll work with that aren't on your specific track (e.g. F12 people will be on a team with F13 people, etc.)

I was originally a little unenthusiastic about working with some of the people on our track, but it has turned out to be a complete non-issue, either because I haven't had to work with those people, or the one that I did work with quite a bit actually turned out to be a pretty cool guy.

Mike is a fun guy to work with...I hope I get another rotation with him besides just psych.

Well, if the stress of the decision gets to be too much for you, I'll be glad to trade tracks with you.
 
If you want to do the elective to figure out if you want to go into EM, then do it as a third year. If you want to do it just because you want to, and you are "sure" that's the specialty you want, then I'd suggest saving it for fourth year.

But still do an elective third year, for sure.
 
my whole anatomy group is in my track (alphabetical). anyone bidding on the track auction? Ha.

I would have been willing to sell my track for any substantial cash offer but I thought I might get in trouble for soliciting such.

I suspect you would have. The stern message that staff would be monitoring this forum and we should stay on topic strongly implied to me not just, "Don't start extraneous conversations," but also, "Don't get smart and try to make money off of this process or we will have to have a little chat with you."

It's also the day AFTER my last day of medical school, unless we're counting PFI, which, of course, we don't. I will happily celebrate with you, Marc, what with the fact that I'll have nothing else to do. Ha!

I agree.

One other thing about that may be to try to figure out if there is a substantial difference in your role as a student between the M3 and M4 rotations. The ED is one place where this could be particularly true.

If you want to shine in the ED, it may be better to have all of the core electives out of the way, so you have experience with most of the types of patients you will be seeing. For example, it would probably not look good to go in and see an OB patient when you have no clue about what to do having not had that rotation.

Hey Samenewme, I met the director of the Scottish Highland Games earlier tonight. He and I were both on a pub crawl to help raise money for a statue to commemorate the Irish heritage of Milwaukee. When I mentioned that I knew a Scottish Country dancer, he said you probably knew his soon-to-be ex-wife, a former dancer in (one of) the group(s).

PFI? I'm doing a rotation in May. Forensic path.

Actually PFI was not going to work for me because I have to go to a conference the first week in may and they would not have let me miss time.
 
I love the world, really I do. I might have to go to court (again) during the first week of May, and I really hope they'll be okay with it. Then again, I'd rather go to PFI than court, which almost ensures that they'll let me go.

I'd love to hear who it is sometime. I've only been country dancing for about seven years, so I don't know all the ex-members. And I don't know many of the Highland dancers at all--maybe four or five of them, at the most--and none of those are that closely involved with the Highland Games people that I know of. Now I'm curious.
 
the worst part of med school will be ending up on opposite sides of the world and country from all the med school friends.
 
Something around half of your class will stay in Wisconsin, so if you're one of those folks, that can be avoided. Otherwise, it's like everything else. Friends from high school, college, etc. You'll stay close with the folks you want to, drift from some, and so on.

That's mostly because half the class is from Wisconsin and those people don't want to leave, and almost all of the non-Wisconsinites want to leave.

I wouldn't mind staying here, b/c I like the ortho program. I'll see how I like others, but I really want to be somewhere warmer.
 
I don't think that's necessarily true--I know quite a few Wisconsin natives who want something new, and vice versa. I think it just works out that way.

I have no desire to return to my home state, that's for sure.
