MCW Class of 2010, Part 3

Another fun TBL session is in the can! It only ran ten minutes into the time scheduled for Path tutoring.

Our group has decided that candy, paper clips, and binder rings are not enough to keep us amused during the endless "learning". For the final session, we will bring Play-doh!

lace it with something absorbed cutaneously.

Estrogen! or fentanyl... Maybe mercury... or just play with mercury. Start with it in a glass container, then break the container, and viola! Class is canceled.

school closed. but only for M1-M2.

The hypocracy police are going to come and get me. I actually appealed a question in the question appeal forum. For TBL. I think when the session ran into the scheduled time for Path tutoring, where I actually learn more, I became incensed and lost my mind.

That makes no sense at all.

Anyway, I went and begged for points.

I feel so dirty.

Maybe.

Weird day today: a Mormon student is organizing a service to escort women through an anti-abortion protest at Planned Parenthood and it is 40 degrees (above zero) outside.

Tangent: There is a Thai food joint next to planned parenthood in west allis. Their Pad Thai isn't that great...not bad but not great. Where can I get an excellent and spicy Pad Thai 'round here?

you are prob talking about singathai ( or however you spell it) and its ok. Thai lotus is my fav and is on national and 40something near the VA

Hi All, a bit off-topic, but I am curious about the softball league. I am a 2nd year pediatrics resident and wondering if we could field a team in the med student softball league. Does anyone know if resident teams are welcome in the league? Thanks for all the info! -aaron

If I said the following phrase to you would you know what it means, "definitely not a Jew" ?

I'm sure you all could play. I'm not sure who is taking over next year's intramurals though. Maybe the M1s around would know.

Coo. It is on my list now.

I'm fond of Hong Thai near Hales Corners, but I haven't actually had their Pad Thai because it's not my favorite thing.

Yeah, I thought that was interesting. I'm thinking of joining the protesters...

That Good Friday email was horrible. They use a Christian reference to recruit people to help women get abortions? Ugh.

The email doesn't even specify the clinic's name or whatnot... just that's it's MSFC. They're trying to hide.

Yeah, you know I'm not militantly pro-life or anything (although I probably fall a little more on that side these days) and that whole Good Friday thing really made me cringe.

We should all be protesting the fact that abortions aren't obsolete. They should have gone the way of the frontal lobotomay a long time ago... or the way of erectile dysfunction... or the way of forehead wrinkles and unsatisfactory boobs.

The guy on the email didn't even know about the email I found out. Apparently one can purchase one of those "uterus belongs to me" shirts. I will soon be sending out an email with the male version of that. I can't think of a good line to go with the picture though.

Why didn't I get this email?

MSFC does the help women through protestors thing every year on Good Friday. The reason that day is chosen each year is because the religous organizations in Milwaukee make it a point every year to have large protests on Good Friday. Not sure why they choose that day, but MSFC helps out in response. It's not MSFC poking fun at religion or something. Far from it. Just a very poorly worded subject title for the email.

Actually the clinic would appreciate assistance from MSFC any day, but people are usually in class, so it doesn't happen. Ideally, women would be escorted into the clinic on a regular basis.

BTW, Ashers, the clinics name is in large letters at the top of the email - Affiliated Clinic.

MSFC (amongst other groups) walks women through the protesters every Saturday.

Dr. Bloom's lectures for Thursday morning have been canceled and will be rescheduled after the break.

Affiliated is not Planned Parenthood.

Sorry about the misinformation. I made a couple assumptions that lead me to believe it was planned parenthood. I once heard someone say that there are only 2 places in Milwaukee that provide abortions and I was once sitting in my car at the stoplight in front of Planned Parenthood and saw some protesters so I figured that just meant there were 2 planned parenthoods in milwaukee and nobody else provided the service.

Also, I wanted to talk about Thai Food.

I saw a bit of yesterday's Physiology test that the M1s took.....holy crap. The first four questions were 1 graph of 8 cardiac output curves with points A-Q. There were 75 messages within 2 hours.

you saw their online forum?

Do they still do that horrible online forum? The best part is how everyone is free to discuss what they think was unclear about the question and ask for clarifications and then have the professors just write back something that doesn't clarify anything but just informs them there will be no more points awarded.

Really? Don't you have a play station or whatever?

We have it in Path, too. The complaining got so bad after one exam (long division to TWO SIGNIFICANT FIGURES is TOO HARD! It would have been PERFECTLY FAIR to ONE SIGNIFICANT figure, but TWO IS TOO MANY!) that someone finally posted that he thought questions 1-50 were all unfair and should be thrown out.

I just play Call of Duty 4 on my PC. I don't even know when Good Friday is, because I'm not sure when Easter is.

Last year I found out it was Palm Sunday when I went to church on a Saturday.

This year I know when Easter is because it's my golden weekend for peds. I got to start off with my black weekend.

Do you ever play any of the MS Flight Simulators? I had one in 1998 and it was sweet. I wonder what they're like with the most up to date graphics.

I have Ghost Recon on my PSII. It is pretty sweet but I don't play it too much. I'd bet the newest graphics are a lil' bit better.

It's my great grandma's 101st birthday on Easter this year!

And my cousin turns 21 that weekend too, so I'm going home to get quite drunk.

Nah, the last flight simulator I tried was in '97 or so, I think. It came with a new computer we bought, and even that was too much for our graphics card. The games that came out near the end of the PS2 were pretty good - I played a lot of Splinter Cell, and the third game had pretty decent graphics. They can't even compare to CoD4 though. I should turn down the graphics once in a while to remind myself how good they are. The game is amazing though - there's like 30 guns, grenade launchers, RPGs, C4, claymore mines, UAV radar, radar-guided air strikes, and helicopter support. I've been playing Search & Destroy missions lately, and when you die, you don't re-spawn, so you just watch your teammates. Some guys are insanely good. My skill depends on the map we're playing...

One of the M1s showed me the phys test. Those VR/CO curves were pretty harsh.

Man, I fell asleep in one of the nerd rooms with my music still playing. After all the dreams about trying to turn off an imaginary computer that was playing music, I managed to turn off my iPod, but the crazy dreams were just starting. Just grabbed a Mountain Dew now and I'm waiting for the effects to kick in....

Interesting. Today's paper says that Dr. Alexander (gave our forensics lectures) is headed to UMichigan to be on faculty there, even though he was expected to take Dr. Jentzen's job as the Milwaukee county medical examiner. Now we only have two pathologists instead of four. I sure hope I get to see an autopsy for path...

That was by far the coolest experience of 2nd year for me. I'm hoping to get the Forensic Pathology elective for 4th year....I'll even cough up the $90 parking fee for the month to do it.

EWW! I don't think they gave me the 5 points from my paper. I shouldn't've wasted my time going to the autopsy -- most disturbing/disgusting thing ever.

You have fun with the foresincs elective.

I still remember the "patients" (DBs, I guess) from that day. There was a pediatrician who shot himself in the chest, an alcoholic who had been rotting in his apartment for a week, and a guy who had been ejected from a vehicle in a car crash - his buddies in the crash with him all were fine and didn't tell the police that he was in the car, so they found his body under some debris a few hours later after he had already died (probaby would have survived if they had found him right away).

We had the lady who died in the WAC.
Yeah, he actually presented that one in lecture. They found some cardiac abnormality in one of her coronary arteries, I think.

Gimlet - remind me never to go out driving with those guys.

I really liked the autopsy thing, though we didn't have many that particular day. Pathology is still probably 3 or 4 on my list.

When I saw those questions I thought they were meant for you guys and felt like they made a mistake administering them to us. First exam was brutal and everyone told me to relax, for I will make it up on the second exam. However, I got the same grade on the second exam as I did on the first. It has been a gut wrenching second semester. And, the professors seem not to care much about our plight. And hearing the rumors flying around has not helped either. I just hope that third block turns out great.

in the end, the score distribution for your class will be identical to the score distribution from out class.

Actually, our average for the first exam was a point lower than last year's.

I mean the final grades. They'll adjust the difficulty of the final and the score cutoffs to create the grade distribution they want.

That sure saved my sorry behind last year. I was .03 points below my cutoff (and no, Dr. Liard DOES NOT ROUND), and I was really annoyed because I accidentally skipped a question on the final. Each exam question turns out to be worth exactly .03 points. But they added some fraction of a point to all the cutoffs in the end (.05? .5? enough to save me), and I became childishly happy.
