MCW Class of 2010, Part 3

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hah! Tremors. Bacon does frontal nudity in Wild Things.

Sometimes med school makes me want to sprint through a barn a just dance.

footloose was made in Utah? "kick off your saturday shoes!"

For those of you that haven't seen Star Wars, here's a pretty good breakdown of the plot.

If I couldn't even sit through that short video without wanting to make that little girl go away should I avoid having children?

I almost conquered the Icy Driveway of Doom! The ice on the southern edge was frozen too solidly to chop. I threw some more salt on it in the hope of weakening it, assuming I can get to it under tomorrow's snow.

I am ready for spring!

Wow, two non-killer exams in a row! I like med school!
Maybe pharm will be like that, too!
And monkeys will fly out my butt!
And I can catch them, and sell them, and pay my tuition!
I'm off to buy a monkey net now.

I will not miss living in an apartment so close to my neighbors. Night before last, my brother was over at 9pm, and we were working on my computer, listening to music at a volume that was easily still conversational. Neighbor comes down and says it's keeping her son awake, please turn it down. 🙄

So this morning, I decided it was the best time to tell her that her very early morning exercise keeps us awake in the morning.

Well played.

hey indo, I saw your assessment of House of God in that other thread, and I must say I agree. I stopped reading it about 1/3 of the way in because it was so stupid. SDN rides that book's jock pretty constantly though. GOMERs, Fat Man, and all his fantasies about different nurses, and the neurotic interns he dealt with just made me fill exhausted already. I found that it's usually more tiring for me to read about somebody else doing something than it is for me to do it.

Okay, who's the loser who said the mock NBME exam last year was "very useful"? I took the stupid thing and thought going in, "biochem and anatomy are going to suck, especially anatomy." And I was right. I really didn't need a mock exam to guide my self-assessment.

I'm sure the administration will use the aggregate information they acquire to adjust the curriculum for future classes, and I am happy for them, but I don't really want to blow four hours on this process. I wish they'd just give us the $45 to apply to the question bank subscription or test prep books of our choice.

haha. useful. It'll be a great 4 hours. Wait, 2 sets of 75 questions for 4 hours? yikes

M3's, the m4's think you all are insane gunners.

Actually, I just think everyone feels immensely stressed out about Step 1 (for good reason?) and wants to take advantage of every opportunity that has the most remote chance of improving their score. I went to that mock test thing too. Did it help? Probably not. Would I do it again if I could go back? Probably.

Well, I know I should be happy for the people who got something out of it.

The thing is, I get a lot more out of practice exams where you can go over the answers afterwards and see what you got right, what you got wrong, and figure out why. Just knowing what subject areas I'm weak in doesn't really help me very much. I already know that. Teach me something, Practice Exam! Don't just wag your little exam finger at me and tell me how much better my classmates were at anatomy. Was it the brachial plexus? Did I misread the question? Is more thorough review of the muscles of the lower extremities more in order?

I'm much more interested in the answers to those questions than in, "If you had taken the exam for real today, not having studied for the thing yet, there is a moderate chance that your score would have been something like XXX. You suck in anatomy and biochem. You're around the mean in the other subject areas, and you excel at NOTHING." Thanks, I knew that.

Not that I'm bitter.

Just tired and I'm going back to studying pharm now.

If there was anything useful about it it was to prove that you are in big trouble come test day rather than you just strongly suspecting it, potentially making you study harder.

I'm having trouble buying that one. As I said, I do believe in practice tests, just not the kind that don't give you detailed results. Because, study WHAT harder? The more specific the answers to that question, the better.

I agree. I'm just saying if there is any value in it it's that it scares you into studying more. It's scarier than other practice tests in my mind because it comes from the real USMLE people. On the other hand, Qtest questions are probably actually harder but more useful because of the explanations.

Holy crap. This shiznit is bananas. 250 drugs in this amount of time is not kind or gentle at all. In fact, I think it's rather unprofessional. I'd like to have a word with the administration.

Don't worry! Before the year is over they'll give you a PDA with epocrates, completely negating any effort you put in this semester.

Still, I'll always remember what drug to use for absence seizures without epocrates. Thank goodness.

I'm recruiting. I love this guy!

That's a guy?

That many disco balls has to be against all kinds of building codes.

I don't want to know.

Dude! I'm STUDYING PHARM. The only personal testing I have done on medications lately is whether alcohol eliminates stress-related eye twitches (it does, but the side effects preclude daily use).

I use the term loosely, and so would he, most likely, with songs with lyrics like "someday i'll grow up and be a beautiful woman."

I'd say I know about 170 of those. I feel like I might be able to make up the others though.

Does anybody else think you're just getting dumber with the physical exam skills with the February H&P workshop? I feel like I'm leaving more and more out. Maybe I'm just noticing more, and maybe that means I'm getting better. But I don't think so. Maybe it's mid-semester burnout. 🙂

The success of that H+P workshop depends on the format. My preceptor was awesome so I got a lot out of it. Other people just get dumped into some ICU room with a patient that isn't able to participate in a physical exam.

Wait, which one was the h + p workshop? Was that the one with the 4th year student?

The M4 student thing was helpful when I had it in October. Then it reinforced stuff we had just gone over. I think to have it later in the year is dumb. That being said, I have the class where I'd help out with it on my rank list.

I have the 4th year thing this coming Tuesday. I was in the STARS center with semi-standardized patients which I shared with another student adn we shared our preceptor with another pair of students so we only saw him after we were done and he told us what we'd skipped doing.

The best piece of advice from the 4th years, "don't do any rotations that you're interested in at Froedtert because they'll make you hate it."

Ortho was fun there, so was CPR (CPR is TOTALLY attending dependent).

I figured it couldn't be ALL bad. I think they were mainly speaking of OB/Gyn and Pediatrics.

unfortunately, the only place you can do peds is at CHW. Peds wouldn't be nearly so bad if my intern were a decent doctor who didn't correct me on my correct spelling. the MCW grads that are interns there are awesome, but I've got a Ross grad.

They don't do so much peds at the 'Dert. That's Children's. 😉

You don't have an option on inpatient peds anyways. Everyone is on a different Children's team. But yeah, word on the street is that OB/Gyn is toughest at Froedtert.

See now I would advise people to stay the crap away from Froedtert for CPR. Comparing stories with the folks that went elsewhere I feel like I got the CPR shaft, so to speak. For example, I tried about 5-6 intubations all month (trust me, I was trying to be proactive about it too). The other student rotating with me this month was at West Allis last month and got a chance at 30 intubations. I'll let you do the math.

I got to try to intubate on every case I was in. I also got to use the glide scope.

My CPR experience at the Dert (or to be more correct, the Dtert) was more along the lines of 5-6 attempts all month. I agree that it is totally attending-dependent. My attending was extremely friendly and cool but was more into teaching by talking about stuff than putting me on the spot to do stuff. Also she did a lot of conscious sedation cases so that decreased the opportunities. And in retrospect it was partly that I realized that intubation is not really a skill I need to develop (nor can I in a month) and I didn't push much to try after I had done it a few times. And I suck at IVs so I didn't feel I was helping anyone by causing my patients more needless pain.

On the other hand there were attendings making their students draw ABGs on every patient etc.

On the MCW website there is a picture of the main med school building entering a black hole or warping into another dimension. Creeeeeeepy.

Maybe this kid is wishing med school into the corn field:

So I need to put in a preference for CPR by Friday. I'm on the fence - Dtert East to see ortho stuff or VA cuz I hear you get to do more. Plus anesthesia is the one field I may choose over ortho - Andy where do you rotate if you're interested in it as a career?

Ah, decisions decisions.

See my post in 09. I got to do a lot of stuff (including scrub into an ORIF L tibia). Just don't tell Henry Liu that your first choice is ortho -- he's not a fan of that... I told him that when I was ON ortho, and he just happened to remember.
