MCW Class of 2010, Part 3

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

One more thing--you'll also promptly forget everything you learned in biochem within a week of passing the class.

What a perfect thing to say! 🙂

I am tutoring a good friend who is a couple of years behind me, and the amount of gen chem and physics I have forgotten is appalling. For electrochemistry I had to go all Socratic on her and let her explain it to ME. 😉 Actually, that works better anyway.

So if I can continue my glorious "forget everything, it's only knowledge" mindset in med school and still be successful enough to waste time on SDN, well, that's a BIG WIN!

Okay, then... now that i have completely forgotten about biochem I have another question you might be able to help me with:

I was originally going to live with my bf who is finishing his MS in Chemistry in da UP and moving to Milwaukee for his PhD. But, research is going, well, like research and he doesn't think he'll be done by August, but he will definately be done by January. Soo...... do you think it's possible to get a roomate for a semester instead of the whole year?

Biochem? What's biochem? Oh, the subject that the guy Rhead lectured about during a neuro class? At least biochem was better organized than neuro.

I'm sure it's possible, but highly individual. You're just gonna have to ask around on that roommate list or something... Sorry, I can't help ya more, but maybe someone else can.

Dreamer, you might want to try looking for a UW-Milwaukee or Marquette student that only needs a roommate for their fall semester. I would imagine there are plenty of them who will be graduating in December and off to bigger and better things afterwards. The problem with med students is that they all need a place for the whole year, unless they have a unique situation like yours. How you would go about finding a UW or Marquette student is beyond me, though.

Can any current students give me advice as to what kind of computer to buy??? Has anyone used the tablet pcs??? If so--do they find them useful? Do people with macs have a difficult time??? Thanks so much!

I don't think anybody got to this yet...so here's an answer.

I haven't seen anyone here with a tablet, so I wouldn't think it would be worth the extra cost unless you yourself have a good reason/need for one. Usually in any given lecture I see two or three notebooks being used, tops. Whenever I took mine in I started perusing Google Earth or SDN in the middle of lecture.

I guess it boils down to getting the computer you prefer. I haven't seen or heard of anyone with Apples/Macs having trouble, and I know at least a couple that use apple notebooks at school. If you'd rather have a desktop, there are always plenty of computers to use at school in the library and lab (which is open 24/7, except when reserved for a test or class, but that's not often). But if you get a notebook make sure it has wireless internet so you can easily get network access.

I think if you want a portable computer a non-tablet would be just fine unless you're uber-excited about that kind of stuff. But I don't see them being all that helpful.

The guy on the Home Shopping Network seems to be really excited about the computer he is selling. Perhaps you could buy that one.

It seems to me that if you aren't into playing video games on your computer you don't really need a computer that is all that powerful. Dell usually has some specials on refurbished lower end computers. +/- 500 pesos

Is anyone else already bored? Someone come play with me!!! 😀

Um, okay. You could teach me to play Sheepshead. I've been in Milwaukee ten years now; it's time I learned it.

Boards? Did someone say boards? *looks around, wild eyed, starts rapidly flipping through First Aid*

Seven days until the damn thing... ugh. This sucks. I wish I was you guys...

So, this might sound stupid, esp since I'm from WI, but what is Sheepshead? 😕

If you're bored, you could go get a job for me. I don't really feel like working and research. Go get a high-paying full time job, and I'll let you keep 15%. Thanks Pratik. 🙂

Good luck on the boards Xandie! 7 days yet huh...that's plenty of time. 😎

It's a card game. Here my knowledge ends.

No problemo....you can be my pimp and i will be your research hoe.

My dad plays Sheepshead with a bunch of guys in the neighborhood once a month. From the way he described it to me, it's somewhat like Euchre, but with betting and a lot more intricacies to the game. It's very much a Wisconsin thing.

April is doing Orthopedics research...you could just let her go to town on your legs with a baseball bat. That would help, right?

Man I hate research. Thank the maker that I'm not doing it.

Here's my day:
Drove home from a quick trip to Appleton. Worked an eight hour shift on the ambulance...no calls...watched TV. Got paid $9.50 an hour. Satisfaction level: 100%

None of you are in the Green Bay area but you should come to DePere today (Friday) to ComedyCity at 7:30 or 9:30. Yours truly is performing. Only 8 bucks with a student ID!

Who are you researching for April? I'm working with Ninomiya doing cell culture stuff for joint replacements, but it's not over @ the ortho dept, it's up on the 4th floor of the HRC.

To you former M-1s turned M-2s, how many of you (if any) are doing the little summer research fellowship thingy that I remember hearing about during my interview?

Not I. I stayed as far away from that as possible. Everyone I talked to about research in my intended field said to not waste your last free summer EVER by doing research unless you're REALLY into research. We'll, I'm not so gung-ho about research, so I decided to chillax.

If you want to do research, though, it's very do-able. Just make sure to find a research mentor early on and get a solid project written up before the deadline. You'll be a shoe-in for the fellowship money, and most departments can find you some money if you don't get the fellowship anyway.

I am doing one medical related thing this summer by volunteering at a free clinic (in addition to the Saturday Free Clinic run by MCW) once a week. Other than that, I'm just hangin' around the new house and raising our new puppy that we get next weekend.

I'm so jealous! I wish I had time for a puppy!

A moment of inspiration:

Twas the summer before med school
and all through the year
I had thought of and wondered
which way summer would steer

I thought of doing research
or teaching or both
in a burst of enlightenment
I decided I won't!

I spent my time biking
and hanging around
camping and swimming
hoping I wouldn't drowned

I hung out with friends
Had a Smirnoff or two
and decided not to read
Biochem for med school

I ignored my tuition bill
and volunteered just because
and the summer before med school
was the best damn summer there ever was!

Ashleigh, I pm'd you. Long story short I'm working with Dr. Niedfeldt and Dr. Young. Plus possibly my own project.

According to what we were told the first day of research orientation that 101 students are doing research. I'm not sure if that number is our class only or includes incoming M1s.

I'm doing research in ortho, if you hadn't figured that out.

They made it sound like the 101 included M1s and M2s. There's also someone from Madison who got special funding from some national program (I forget which) -- not through MCW, but that person's still going through the program. Seema told me about that today.

Here's a pic of my dog - a Boston terrier - at 4 mo. She's now 11 months. I should probably take some current photos!! Now she's bigger with more black around the nose.

I went and toured the area for the last few days and after consideration of the housing/areas to live etc there is a good chance i will be purchasing a condo within a mile of school. I am wondering how many people would be interested in renting? The condo is brand new (if you want to see it it is on 74th and Stevenson-just a street back from Bluemound) heated parking garage, each bedroom has bathroom, huge closet space for master suite (i would take a different room) kitchens are awesome with a granite eating island and everything, livingroom with fireplace, dining room, courtyard, a block from a great running path, 8 min from downtown, eating places within walking distances etc-i would walk to school during warmer months-but like i said with guaranteed undergound heated parking-no worries in winter-This place is amazing and I am really excited about it. It will be around the same prices as the 1 bedroom places i was looking at which were 525-650 (but those were total dives). I am willing to spend a little more to get the nicer kitchen, security, parking etc even if that means roommates (cheaper heating!) I am looking for 2-3 (if somone wanted to share HUGE masterbedroom) male of female roomates-(if my profile doesnt say so i am a 24 yr old female from boise idaho-want to know more jsut ask!) I do have a golden retriever who will live in the upper loft (of the 3 bedroom) with me-she is pretty low key and lazy. I have taken her to training school and she is house trained obviously! Depending on the room wanted and how much I end up getting financed for the rooms will be between 450-800 (somewhere in between...smaller room=less money!) If you are seriously interested private message me and let me know. I have layouts I could fax you and will be getting pictures soon... I will start the lease Aug 1st but may be able to move stuff in earlier-not sure yet. Let me know as soon as possible-but like i said it is a great oppotunity and really reasonable fro the ammenities and price. Thanks for the interest!

Hello. Not sure if you're still looking for roomates to share your new condo with? I'm just beginning my search for a place to live for next year and I just found this forum page today when I was looking around. The place you are buying sound pretty sweet and is exactly what I'm looking for. I'm a 24 year old male originally from Wisconsin. I don't know if you have a preference between males and females but if you're still looking please let me know. Thanks

Ben

Hi everyone. I'll be joining the class of 2010 as well and I'm currently in the area looking for a 1BR apartment to live in. Right now, I'm most strongly considering Normandy Village and Autumn Glen in West Allis. If anyone knows about either of these places, I'd really appreciate your input. I'd especially like to know about Autumn Glen, and if any of you know anyone who lives there, since I've already heard a bit about Normandy from current med students. Also, if anyone has any other suggestions about places to live, I'd appreciate that too. Price isn't a huge issue but cheaper is better. The main thing I'm concerned about is that I'll be bringing my two cats, so I want a place that allows pets, does not require declawing, and is big enough for the cats to have some space to roam around.
Thanks in advance
Karen

It's definitely Wednesdays. I know because I 😍 the Taco Bar. It's too bad they passed up Tuesday for taco bar day, thus effectively eliminating the obvious alliteration, Taco Tuesdays.

More importantly, (even more important than tacos, if you can imagine) is Tater Tots on Friday. mmmmmmm, tots.

And Marc, it's the sour cream you have to watch out for. That stuff is dense!

Hi Karen,

I don't have any advice for you, but welcome to the thread! Hopefully Marc or April will chime in with some advice about Normandy Village (although I believe they both like it). I haven't heard about Autumn Glen.

I'm pretty happy with Normandy Village overall. Not sure about their cat policies, though I know if you want a free cat or two there's always a couple roaming around that screech like dying children at 2am. I love that sound.

Karen, sounds like you have a pretty good idea of what Normandy Village has, so I dunno what else I can offer. I CAN tell you that my only major gripe is that it's a bit too far for me to comfortably and safely ride my bike to school. However, you got a grocery store, Kohl's (clothing, kitchenware, and bathroomware pretty cheap) nearby, plus a few decent restaurants not far off. If you like buses I think they come around there too. Normandy is also pretty good about maintenance stuff...they usually show up in a day or two for minor things and respond quickly to other requests. I requested new carpet before I moved in and I got it. You've got indoor parking if you want to pay the extra ($40/month?) money. Handy for winter. And of course a swimming pool. I have the balcony that overlooks the pool, but I pay an extra 10 bucks a month for it. It's the one with the shiny color changing nightlight on it.

Now I'm rambling thanks to beer. Goodnight, children.

Oh, and Andy? Xandie? I don't care when your taco bar is. I have Taco Thursday in head and nobody can change it. I will become violent about this if necessary.

Things that are disturbing:

1) Marc, I live ten blocks from you. That's just strange. I'm over on 111th, with my own screeching cats.

2) Again, Marc. You mentioned the dying cat screech and my brain went to cru-di-chat, of course caused by a 5p- deletion and characterized by low-set ears and other lovely sequelae.

3) There are 2147 unique questions in Q-bank. I have, as of this moment, answered 2008 of them. Also, I have done 3,630 questions in all, repeating incorrect ones in Qbank and doing others (released items from the AAMC, full length tests, etc). My boards are in exactly 36 hours.

I'm not sure why this is going in this thread, since I really don't want to scare the new M-1s. But this is where I started typing it, so this is where it goes. Everyone pray/think happy thoughts for me on Thursday (and nope, I don't care who you pray to) so that I can pass the damn thing.

Wow...you did A LOT of questions. If you generally got it when you were doing ?s, you should be fine. Now, in case you haven't heard this yet, I'm about to impart some very important USMLE post-test info to you....when you walk out of that lovely testing center, there is a very strong chance that you'll feel like you failed the test. Conversely, there is a very low likelihood that you actually failed the test. If you know this going in, it should be much less anxiety-provoking.

The problem is that in med school, when you take a block exam and get x questions correct, you usually have a decent idea of which ones they were. On board exams, you will often make educated and/or relatively-blind guesses. So, when you're done, you're only sure of a handful of ?s that you got right, and you're not used to that. OK, don't wanna freak you out in the 11th hour, but thought it would help if you knew the above going in. Someone older and wiser told me and I'm glad they did. Oh, and no studying today. Go do something mindless--your brain will love it. Bueno suerte. 👍 👍

Anyone have a recommendation for which of the 3 preferred lenders to go with for student loans?

almost everyone i know used THE. i also consolidated all of my loans with them and can tell you that they have awesome customer service. i've called them several times with questions that are probably very stupid to them (i know jack about loans, financing, etc) and they've been amazing. i know that the fin aid office is pretty high on them as well. that's my 1 (and only) cent on this issue--hope it helps.

I use THE also. I haven't really needed to deal with the customer service yet, but I've only heard good things, like Hawkeye's experience. I really like their 0 fees, benefits, etc. And when you consolidate, I believe you retain all the benefits, unlike some other places. (so I've heard anyway) I had already planned on using THE before I even knew I was going to MCW.

Can't help you with the other programs. Maybe someone else has them?

Thanks for the advice. I was trying to decide between Access group and THE. I had absolutely no desire to get loans through US Bank because I've already had a number of run-ins with them. THE does seem to have favorable terms for borrowing, and it's good to hear that they have good customer service. I'm sure I'll be calling them with some stupid questions of my own.

Hi Karen,

I live in Normandy village. Never heard of Autumn Glen, sorry. I have a small dog, so my choices for apartments was quite limited. I really like my apartment. I got the "medium" sized 1br (~760 sq ft). My pet fee was $100 upfront, and $20/month pet rent. I'm not sure if those rates are the same for cats. The place is really spacious, huge closet (essential for me!!) and a storage space. Everyone is friendly. Not sure what else I can add, esp since it sounds like you've heard about Normandy already. The price is a little steeper (not as much as the Reserve), but you really get your money's worth I think. I admit, I am looking for a cheaper place, but if I can't find something that's cheaper, with just as much closet space, then I might stay. Oh, and we have free heat, which is important. Pool, fitness center, etc. Anything else you'd like to know?

Just to clarify for Marty -- Speedos are NOT acceptable European fashion. Lisa agrees. She also says you suck^2 (for being in Barcelona and not WI).

Congrats to all you 2010'ers!!! You're gonna love the school.

If any of you are considering moving downtown and have any specific questions or concerns about downtown/3rd ward/east side living, shoot me a message and I'll give you my phone number. I live downtown now and love it.

On another note, if anyone is interested, I used to live at the Underwood Station (115th and Watertown Plank Rd). It was a really good place to live, although the walls are pretty thin (you get that with new construction).

I'm definitely gonna be out there at MCW this coming August. Just wanted to throw my name in the c/o 2010 pot. Gonna be heading out there from Cali next sat to look for a 2 bed apartment. If any current students who are out there know of any or can do a HUGE favor and pull a number or 2 of the bulletin board near the cafeteria, etc i'd appreciate it greatly. I'm totally stoaked to be goin' out there soon. Please PM me w/any suggestions. Thanks!

I too would be traveling to Milwaukee to look for a 1br. I was told that most privately owned houses are cheaper. Are there postings in the cafeteria or do i just drive around and ask?

If you drive around school, you should see a ton of for rent signs around school. Good places to look would be on Watertown Plank Rd, West North Ave between 70-124th street and Bluemound. I have also seen lots of places for rent on the street behind the hospital, I think it is called Wisconsin Ave. You can also look at the boards at school. But I have noticed that the postings at school are usually a little further out (5-10 min drive). Good Luck!!

Were we supposed to send an official transcripts in to the office of admissions? I can't rememeber if I did that or not.

I send mine awhile ago. Has anyone recieved anything from fin. aid lately?
