I know several people that use THE, as do I, and they've always been very good at helping/answering questions on the phone. Not very good specific advice, but I know I'm pleased with them.

Something else you might try is asking the school (Dr. Haldemann might be your best bet) to get you in touch with some folks from the med student spouses assoc. From there, you should be able to be able to contact some married students/spouses and ask them what they know about housing from a family perspective. Might help you target your search a bit. Also, I know there are a few people that live in Waukesha in some sort of subsidized housing (if your wife doesn't work, you'd likely qualify). It's a little farther (20 min or so) but easily accessible by freeway. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the advice, guys, I REALLY appreciate it. Fortunately, one of the apartments I called was managed by a guy from my home town. He gave us a couple of numbers and we found one really good one and the landlord even thinks our dogs might like to play together!! It has been an anxious time for my little family but we are on track now. We'll be there on Aug. 4th. I truly hope I get to meet some of you and thank you personally.

Whats up D, I heared some bad things about US Bank. I signed up with THE b/c of the great customer service they offer. So check them out, or call them if you have too.

I just chose US Bank because it had that 5% back. Doesn't seem like much, but after all the loans I'll be taking out, that could be a nice chunk 🙂

I chose US Bank largely for this reason also. And, I needed a new checking account anyway and since US Bank has a branch at Froedtert I thought this would be a great way to consolidate checking, loans, and credit card.

I went with US Bank...I already have a few accounts with them and have been very happy with them. Thanks for the insights and see ya in a few weeks!

I don't know how many people are out here yet, but I have family coming into town for the white coat ceremony and can't do the zoo or museum because I will be entertaining them. Anyone baseball fans? Brewer games are pretty fun...anyone up to get together a crew to go to a game either before orientation or during? I know the Brew crew play the Cubs at home on tuesday night of orientation week (would have to get tickets now because that game will sell out!). Could be fun to do some tailgating before hand and watch some baseball...

They orientation committee is trying to get tickets to that Brewers/Cubs game on that Tuesday night. We've been working on it, and Dr. Haldemann was going to see how much money the orientation committee was going to have for it. We have another meeting in about 2 weeks.

Anyone ever tried to form a student web page for MCW? I have seen a couple of other schools do it, and it seems useful. Anyone up for it?

I'd be up for this. It's been awhile since I've been to a Brewers game.

Ashers, keep us updated on the status of these tickets. Thanks!

Anyone know what the nieghborhood around 86th and Center St. is like?

Will do. I'll let you guys know after the meeting. Unless someone who was at the last meeting has any news, since I was a slacker and didn't go (I was helping a friend who just graduated load up his stuff before he moved to Oklahoma).

Center St. has a pretty bad reputation in Milwaukee, but as you go further and further west, the neighborhoods get better. I looked at a place around 60th and Center and the area was still a little sketchy. The area is better once you get past 76th St. 86th and center is going to put you only a little over a mile from Mayfair Mall, and places are generally nicer around the mall. So, I think 86th and Center should be fine, but if you're going to take a 5 mile walk at 3am, I would recommend walking west instead of east.

Yeah, I think Opmed got it summed up pretty much. I walk my dog along Center on the West side of Hwy 45, and that area is really nice. Very suburban with families, kids and stuff. There's an elementary school, high school and middle school all on Center and 113th-ish-116th. There was a place at 75th and Center that I had considered looking at cuz it was super cheap, and I drove by and thought that area was okay. (didn't look at the apartment cuz it looked tiny, not cuz it wasn't nice enough)

Thanks for the info.

Please keep the info coming about the brewers game... I'd love to take my old man.

I'm another late one to post on the MCW forum or to join SDN at all actually, so Hi Guys! Here are the things on my mind after browsing the 31 page forum!

I went to Milwaukee today and drove around Tosa quite a bit looking for a place and found that most places seemed to have a lot of elderly folks! Can you guys suggest a place kind of near The Reserve (that's not the Reserve b/c I know its pretty pricey)? I tried Underwood Station but it's all rented out. I also thought about Normandy, Seradino Square, Mayfair Manor. Someone suggested Harwood but isn't that a retirement home? I'm also trying to call a bunch of places that would be in random houses. My parents were considering buying a condo/house and so I was thinking of renting it out with some other people. Any suggestions? My main concerns are being around younger people/med students, location and price.

Also, people kept talking about these pre-orientation activities? I've never heard about this but what are these? I'm down for meeting people!

Also, I know the roommate list is out but I'm surprised by how few people are on it. Do you guys know if it's best to contact someone on it right away or what do you think? By the way, I can't believe how many of you found places to live back in Feb!! Really on top of your game!

well I can't tell you much because I didn't actually go to Wauwatosa myself, but my soon to be roommate did and found us an apartment at Overlook Apartments that seemed pretty reasonable. Other med students live there, too and I guess it's about 1 1/2 miles from campus. She said the places they looked at that were in houses were a little too wet/moldy-ish for my god awful allergies.

The pre orientation activities are great...the people I meet there are people I got to know pretty well through the year. They have a bunch of activities like BBQ and dinner at the piano bar where you can meet people. I would def go if you have time.

ohh and when is the pre orientation/orientation/first day of class for the new M1s?

I am up to meet up with some people for a Brewer's game whether it be during orientation week or earlier...I have been trying to go to them as I figure this is the last year I will have a boat load of free time during the season! Let me know if anyone wants to get a little group together...

Should be 7 Aug for the start of orientation.

Dude, Pratik, I just told a former M4 the name "Comatosa" -- he'd never heard it before, and he loves it!

My roommate and I will be living at Overlook Apartments too. I was glad that a spot opened up for us there because it is in a great location. Close to the school, and only a couple minute walk from some tennis courts too. ;-)

And, we're looking around for some used furniture right now. We're trying to get good used stuff...but anything is better than what I had at my last house in Madison.

My dermatologist called it comatosa.

It is kinda like the neighborhood Smokey lives in on the movie Friday.

That's AWESOME!!! I'll have to show that movie to my wife and baby daughter so they can be as exited about living in that nieghborhood as I am, now that I know what its like.

Hi hi everyone~
Just saying hi as an incoming M1 student to all of you out there, I think I definately will need a lot of help in the near future, so... thanks in advance~

I HIGHLY recommend the pre-orientation activities. I made myself go, all by my lonesome, not really knowing what to expect, and I'm so glad I did. Met some really great people and I still mainly hang out those same people now. Plus it was nice getting out in Milwaukee since I had no idea where I was going and it was also nice knowing someone when walking in for orientation on Monday morning.

I have never heard comatosa before...I like it.

Okay, I still have no idea where the Overlook apartments are. Someone fill me in.

Oh, and I'm up for a Brewer's game anytime. Going on the 4th. Can't wait for my racing hot dog bobble head!!!

Really. Thanks Scott. For some reason I have never notice apartments over there. I'll have to do a driveby. 🙂 For future reference, do they take pets?

It's not mentioned in their brochure, so I kind of doubt it. You could call the apartment manager, Dan Bannier, at 258-0182 and ask.

I've scanned the brochure. It's available here: Brochure

In fact, for those of you looking for an apartment, I have some photos from The Reserve, Normandy Village, Regal Crest Village, Serafino Square, and The Overlook that I took when touring them. Remember, some of the demo units are very nicely furnished, while others are not furnished at all. Apartment Photos

Make sure you wear sunglasses and steal a different car if you're gonna do that. I recommend something older with thick metal doors in case someone returns fire. Hire a driver, too; you can't do both very well.

If you are going with an automatic I would recommend something of the 9 mm variety, such as an Uzi. It packs a pretty good punch without too much recoil. If you think you might be farther than, say, 35 ft. from your target, I would recommend the AR-15: high muzzle velocity combined with a lower grain bullet makes aiming (even open sighted) a delight.

I would definitely recommend the AR-15 over the Uzi, especially if you're needing accuracy. If you just want a good spray, the Uzi will be fine.

So, for those of you to-be-M2's, I was looking at your fall semester calendar and I noticed that quite a few tuesday afternoons seem to be unoccupied by classes...
I was just wondering why no classes are scheduled? Is there something else M1's are supposed to be doing? (besides the obvious)

Serious comments and sarcasm laden replies openly welcomed.

Personally, I used that time to not study -- like I did most of first semester. I probably should've studied more.

You can go see your mentor on the free Tuesdays. I really can't remember what I did those afternoons -- I probably just watched TV or something.

The more free afternoons you have the better. Don't question a lack of class on an afternoon, just be thankful. Do you really wanna be in lecture all the time? You'll have plenty to do...trust me.

Man, I hate how slow things get on Saturday night...Anyone else stuck working?

No...I really am working!

Ok, even if I weren't working, I'm married and have a 3 month old baby which is equivalent to a "get-out-of-dorkdom-free card"!

No one had said anything while I was at the lab this afternoon/evening between 2 and 8 I think. Man, I was bored. Back there tomorrow to finish the western blots.

Don't you just love westerns...hours of tedious incubations and extractions...then you see that little dot on your film indicating that your enzyme actually cut something (mine was vWF) and it's like your on top of the world!

Or you don't see anything on the film, and you want to cry.

After stripping the nitrocellulose, and doing another set of different samples, we figured our secondary Ab is old. I wasted so much time stripping the first set, when all I have to do is develop it for like an hour... another great use of time.

We ran five westerns before we realized that the von Willebrand factor cleaving protease was gone way before we innoculated with vWF. (we typically waited at least 24 hrs. post-stimulation) Ahhhh the joys of research...

PS I never did see the cleavage bands on any of my films...

Quick question for you Wisconsin residents: Why did you choose MCW over UW? What do people think are the differences between the schools?

For me it was mosly gut instinct. I also liked the better exposure to emergency medicine that I get at MCW. Also, I just preferred the living areas and ease of transportation compared to Madison. Traffic in Madison is horrible right now, with all the construction. I think the students here are probably more down to earth as well. I never got the same welcoming feeling from UW. Still, it is a very good school from what I can tell.

ps...though, Madison's new ER is amazing, and I think they'll be able to establish an emergency medicine residency soon, probably in the next several years. Their old ER was horrible.

that and we have classrooms with huge dry erase boards. love the dry erase boards. love them.

and seriously, i forgot to mention, i didn't want to get shipped all over the state for 3rd and 4th year. I'm very much a home-body. If I can't go home at the end of the day I get a little mean.

When it comes to diagraming the citric acid cycle and the like, there is nothing better than a big ole dry erase board, AMEN!
