We got yelled at more for people setting food on the counter by the computers in the front. Apparently they're really possessive over that and NOTHING should ever be on that counter except for the ever constant vase of flowers. 😱

I had forgotten about that--we sure did get yelled at! Jerks.

Anyway, we ate in the HRC all the time and never got yelled at. Literally every morning second semester I had a yogurt, bagel, cottage cheese or muffin and no one ever said a thing to me. If you start leaving crap all over the place then, yeah, that's a problem.

As far as Kerrigan v. HRC, Ashley is right. NO desk space. And you'll have to take at least one exam in there, which sucks major tootsies, but it's a craptastic exam, so it kinda fits. The chairs are slightly more comfortable to sleep in, if you happen to have narcolepsy (which is frequently induced by Dr. Becker and the rest of the pathology lecturers). You have to use two desks if you want to take notes and have your drink somewhere near your arms.

Fear not, my brother from another mother, we will make it work

The plus side is you can't poke me in the ribs whenever I fall asleep.

Seriously, you guys will be fine. But the big guys in your class (like Joel, in my class, who's like 6'6" and somewhat built) will have serious problems. Yuck. I sit with Team Utah, so we were pretty cuddly. No more of that though... just hanging out in a dark room looking at pictures. Yay.

I hear things go on in those dark rooms. That's where Doogie Howser got a kiss from a 30-something year old radiologist.

Is there some sort of shuttle/bus that goes between Milwaukee and Chicago? Plane tickets to Chicago are quite a bit cheaper for me than to Milwaukee.

There is a bus that is really cheap that goes from the mke amtrak station called the megabus (http://www.megabus.com) to downtown chicago( 8 bucks). There is also one from airport to airport that is a bit more expensive. ($23/$36 depending on if its ohare or midway) http://www.coachusa.com/info/wisconsincoach/ss.toolkit.airportfares.asp

amtrak also has the hiawatha route that goes btn mke and chi several times/day. i think it's $20 or so. i know several people that do this regularly. check amtrak.com.

I have the 5th edition of the Berg, Tymoczko biochem text...anyone think it neccessary to upgrade to the 6th (coming out this summer)?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I had the same text in undergrad soo I brought it along when i moved. I think I used it once. The biochem dept give out notes for the entire semester that contains more details than you ever wanted to know. In most classes, in first year atleast, you dont really need additional text. The department will give you everything you need. The only exception I can think of is physiology and anatomy.

keep a look out for pictures of my right thumb! i had an mri today for a torn UCL (gamekeeper's thumb). I spent most of the day not working -- hanging out up in ortho talking to the residents and 2 attendings who were seeing me, and getting an MRI for something an ultrasound would've been sufficient for -- except they couldn't find anyone to do an ultrasound.

to those about-to-be-M2's, I was reading the 2009 thread and saw a postin of Andy's that referred to a blog that complained about gunners asking questions and taking away from lecture... Any problems with this in your class? (this is mostly directed at those who go to class, but feel free to chip in anyway Splat.)

Oh Lord...bless me that I will never again have to scrutinize lab samples because some one cant tell the difference between serum and csf.

If I never have to load an immulite 2000 again I will dedicate my professional life to the disadvantaged, homeless, the poverty-stricken, and the pygmies down in New Guinea.

There was a bit of that at the beginning of the semester. But it sorta died out pretty quick. Now it's become more of a "who can race to the front of the room first" thing during break times to ask all of their questions.

Oh, and do any of you other M2s wanna go to the VA with me to get fingerprinted, if you have not yet done so? I'd probably be going on Tuesday or Wednesday or something.

they're using US for torn ligaments? huh, haven't heard that before, but i'm not really up on the ortho literature, either. in fact, i'm not really up on the em lit. i'm just happy if i can find a gallon of blood in the belly with the US (happy for me, not the pt. although if it's there, it's good for him if i find it 😎 )

I thought it seemed strange to use US for this, but I guess for the UCL it's standard... not sure about what others. When I looked up treatments and diagnosing gamekeepers thumb before I went into my appointment, US is common to diagnose it. When they couldn't get ahold of anyone in Froedert to do the US, the doctor was like, "Wel'll just get you an MRI, it's more definitive, and what's insurance for, anyway?"

"OOOOOOOOOOOOOOh....I'm so glad when daddy comes home
glad as I can be.
Clap my hands and shout for joy
and climb upon his knee.
Wrap my arms around his neck
hug him tight like this...
Grab his cheeks and give him what? *little girl puts hand to her ear*
a great big kiss!!"
Thankyou for that wonderful song Tori!

Jeeeeeeezzzz I hate workin' on Sundays.

please tell me someone is out there tonight fartin' around on this thread?

ok, now I'm just trying to get more posts...

I am! Completely freaking out because my classmates got their board scores and I didn't get mine... somehow compulsively refreshing my browser makes it better... 😱

Sorry to hear that...hope you get'em soon. I've seen your posts going back to when you were first accepted to MCW. It's kinda cool to see your progress. I'm crossin' my fingers for ya.

Xandie, I'm sure you did great!! Good luck. I'd probably be doing the same thing though. Check back next year and you'll probably see a whole strew of freaked out posts from me.

Everyone should just do like I will and skip the boards...don't know why more people don't do that.

Oh well. Good luck Xandie!

I would do that, except I heard it's recommended to take them for ortho. It's a lot less stressful your way though. 😉

Good luck, Xandie!!

Marc, if I get my background check materials filled out tonight, I will probably be heading over to the VA around 10:00ish tomorrow (I have an appt. near school at 9). I'll keep you informed.

this happened to a classmate of mine, too. and it sucks more b/c they came on saturday, so you have to wait the extra day for the mail. i don't think that's any indication of how you did. of course, my classmate failed, so maybe it does...kidding...they passed and so will you. you just can't expect the nbme to do things in way that makes sense, ya know. for instance, does ANYONE (including them) know what the two or three digit score means??? 😕

Update: Didn't come today either. 🙁 Although I found out today that a few other people didn't get theirs either. Here's fingers crossed for tomorrow!

I'll say a prayer for you tomorrow while I'm fly fishing the Blacksmith...This Brown's for you!!!

Don't worry, Xandie...they have to double check all the answers when someone breaks the record for the best score ever. 😀

OK, it looks like this will not be happening. G-D they want a lot of stuff for this background check! I have lived in way too many places over the past 5 years to remember it all. This could be bad.

I "broke the rule" and said I lived at school throughout my 4 years in Green Bay. I doubt they really care I moved to GB, then spent the summer home, then went back, then came back home, and so on. I really didn't kill enough people in those years to warrant a very thorough check. Seriously.

And I sure didn't waste time listing my "qualifications" for the "job." Freaking A.

Yay!! i just found my apartment in tosa! 😀 😀 It's off 103rd and Bluemound...dolphin apartments or smthg...I am SO excited!! I'll be moving here early August! 😀

This is such a relief! The manager told me there were several med students but that she barely sees them. I'm actually moving into an apartment that a med student is moving out of, so maybe I'll get some inspiration from the spirits ...lol, j/k But seriously, do any of you guys live there?

I can't wait to meet you all! 🙂

Congratulations! I'm on 62nd and Bluemound, so rather a distance away, but we're SORT OF neighbors. I'll see you soon!

Denise

My best friend lives over there!! Which apartment are you moving in to? (Feel free to PM me, or ignore me, if you don't want to share that particular information).

Also, I got my board scores, and I passed. So thanks to everyone who was thinking of me!!

CONGRATS!!! 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀

i think in celebration of passing, you should make us a batch of those brownie/fudge things you made a last semester. 😛

Pratik asked me to post here whether or not everyone thinks the aorta is an organ. Of course, one must first look up the definitition of "organ."

2. <biology> A natural part or structure in an animal or a plant, capable of performing some special action (termed its function), which is essential to the life or well-being of the whole; as, the heart, lungs, etc, are organs of animals; the root, stem, foliage, etc, are organs of plants.

This has been bugging him all day. We won't even get into whether skin is hollow or not.

Stedman's says an organ is "a differentiated structure part of a system of the body; composed of tissues and cells; exercises a specific function (e.g., respiration, secretion, digestion)"

Doesn't seem like the aorta is an organ... Maybe Pratik should just contemplate the cell-yness of RBCs.

I don't even remember which ones those were-I make a lot of baked goods. In fact, I'm taking lemon bars to the hospital today. 🙂 So if you want some, come on up to Fluoroscopy in Froedtert... or not. 😀

In an effort to protect my good name (or what is left of it), i would just like to say that it was marc who induced this reign of deep thought. He would also like to know if the skin is a hollow organ caues if you remove all the other body components all you have left is a ball of empty space.

And Ashers... the question is if a keratinocyte is a cell. We all know that RBC are cells that arent really cells cause they cant replicate.

Is not the aorta composed of tissues and cells? Is circulation not a specific function?

And I do assert that skin is a hollow organ.
