MCW Class of 2010, Part 3

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys, I know I haven't posted in a while, and I'm sorry, I know how you all must have missed me. Anyway, in response to the previous post, I would say have fun, try to stay awake in all the orientation thingys, and go out at night with everyone when they mention it during the day. Each night I met a bunch of people from not only my class, but also many M2s. Not to mention, it's a good time. Take care and best of luck to everyone this upcoming year. Peace.

Well, guys, any last minute tips/comments before we start orientation in a week?!?!?!?! 🙂

I agree...go out before/during orientation. Also, realize that biochem is stupid and you cant memorize everything. It will save you a lot of grief. Dont buy too many books. Personally, i like review books (brs anatomy and netter is all i used first semester) cause textbooks are wayy too detailed and boring. Set your priorities for when school starts. Do you wanna be at the top of the class?, do you want to enjoy the 4 years?, how much time are you willing to devote to school on a given day? Make a list of things you would still like to do during school and really strive to make time for it. Working out, tv, spending time with family and cooking will require effort and planning. Be kind to your classmates and help each other out. Dont burn bridges with classmates cause you will have to work with them at some point. Dont feel guilty if you skip class to study. Many time you can learn what you need to in less time than the length of lecture. Dont skip class and not study...it will lead to trouble. Most importantly, remember you are going to be a physician and not a basic science researcher...focus on things that are clinically revelent and don't worry about water or ATP being released from some stupid reaction eventhough the prof thinks it is important.

For the out of staters, you will need an ice scraper in november...see agent splat for details.

Note very well: Have Fun

Just my less than 2 cents worth of advice.

  Nice Stekiel reference there, Pratik!

Ashers and Pratik both touched on this a little...everyone who goes to class will rag on the people who skip it, and vice versa. They're both right, because you just have to pick what works for you.

Aww shucks

Couple more piece of advice. Dont be recruited to every interest group and orginization during the first week. Most of the times you can attend the meetings and speakers without being a member (with the free lunch). You can always pay your dues if you are interested during the year. During the same week, there will be lots of opportunities to get involved as leaders of various associations. If something interest you, dont hesitate. After the first couple of weeks, there arent really many leadership positions you can run for. You will get a big sib which is an M2 that is there to answer your questions and help you out with anything. Lot of times they have books, old test, coops they wll give to you...be sure to contact them. Figure out what your study habits have been in the past and stick to them. More than likely they have worked until now...dont fix it if it aint broken. Try getting together with other SDNers even before orientation. We did that last year and it was great to know at least a few people going into orientation.

On a side note, im working with the admission committee this year about refining the admission/interview process. Do any of yall have suggestion or things you didnt like about the process?

I loved MCW's interview process - I felt very at-ease, which is a HUGE reason i chose this school. The only thing I didn't like about it was my tour. The girls who gave my tour didn't act like they even wanted to be there and actually stopped during the tour to talk to some friends about a party they had gone to while us interviewees just stood there waiting for them...very unprofessional 🙂 But, I'm sure that was just our tour guides and the rest were probably great!!!!

I think it would be nice to include in-town residents in whatever gathering they do Thursday night for the out-of-towners using hospitality. Or maybe they just didn't do one of those because I interviewed Early Decision? Anyway, it would be nice to get a little more of an informal look at the place than you get on the interview and the tour, so some sort of informal gathering is good.

The Women in Medicine group (whatever they were called) were informally meeting in the cafeteria and offering bagels during the time before the interview. It was great to get to just sit and talk to them and get a sense of the happiness of MCW students. If this isn't a part of the standard practice, it should be.

They do that at every interview session. It's a great time to go steal bagels. And by steal, I mean, if you're actually a student, you put in your time by talking to people as well. =) 😉

quick question. If I already have my own health insurance plan (not through spouse or parents)... do I have to cancel it and pick up the humana plan offered through the school. Bceause humana has pretty rediculous prices and i would rather stay with my current provider. Any info could help since I need to send this stuff in like tomorrow to get it there on time. Thanks

I'm pretty sure you need to pick up the humana plan unless you're still covered under your parents or a spouse. I have to agree with you that the humana prices are pretty ridiculous.

On a side note, is anyone interested in getting together before the big orientation week? Either way, I'm pretty pumped about starting. It's hard to believe it's only two weeks away.

I had both humana and my original health insurance under my parents until november of last year when I turned 25, and my parents free health insurance was no longer free (and it wasn't even valid in WI -- I just used it for the free prescriptions I could get from home). Now I just have humana. If your insurance under your parents is good for the entire year, I'm pretty sure you can use just that. I know some people who don't have humana.

I'm here in MKE all stinkin' summer after the mass exodus of 8 week summer researchers. So I'd be up for doing stuff. =) I'll also be around during orientation week. Look for me at the OSIG table with nothing to hand out. Since I'm a co-coordinator of the org fair, and a co-pres of the ortho student interest group, i wanted a table -- though with my splint on my hand, i'm an advertisement for the department.

I'll be around August 1st and I'd love to meet people ahead of time. PM me or post here! I'm flying to New Orleans to see family tomorrow and driving back, so I'll be in and out of touch.

I have a different perspective on health insurance, since the Humana coverage is very similar to what the State of Wisconsin was paying $700+/month premiums for when I was a state employee. On the other hand, I am a little bummed that it appears you have to pick your primary from the MCoW group. I thought at first I'd get to keep my doctor, but he's a direct contract with Humana. Pooey. I'm going to call tomorrow to verify that.

HHOOOOOLYYYYY CRAP! 2 Weeks!!!!

I still haven't heard anything about pre-orientation activities. Have you?

You M2's have been great by the way. Thanks!!

There's stuff being planned, and we have another meeting like next Wednesday I think. As for the baseball game that people were talking about earlier. It wasn't mentioned at the last orientation meeting. So I'm not too sure what's up with it.

Here's my advice, and I am 100% serious about this: Every now and then, stop giving a crap. Stop caring. Don't worry. Med school is not the most important thing ever.

Oh, and several people in our group bitched about the giant t-shirts. If it's feasible to have them in sizes, it would make people happier. I just use mine as a nightshirt and was thankful that was the worst problem I had on my interview day.

When you get your mcw email address you can join facebook, and then join "MBIG" if you really *heart* Marc so much. 😉

There's also DWIG for one of the anatomy teachers. =)

The abbreviations will make more sense in a few weeks. (scary thought), and an M4 just reminded me today about how close I am to starting classes again.

No, wait! I can't join things! Marc said to not care! Must obey Marc! He's my favorite!
for the next ten minutes.

Seriously, it's great having all of the M2s on this thread. It's like having an extra helping of big siblings.

I hope you get lost in your extra large tshirt :meanie: 😛

Actually, they were thinking about either getting different size shirts or maybe switching to a small bookbag.

I'm sure Marc would make an exception for MBIG -- it's an interest group dedicated to him that I made on facebook. =) Even Xandie joined it.

As for extra big sibs... yeah, especially one like me who's been at home all day bored watching tv or at the computer. At least people have been posting today. =)

I'm so over Marc. I 😍 bookbags! One of the perks of having been a librarian for the last mumble-mumble years is the large number of tote bags you pick up at conferences. I'm the envy of the other shoppers at Aldi. I never have to pay for grocery bags there.

I'm picking up a theme here.....

http://www.mental-health-matters.com/disorders/dis_details.php?disID=80

Excerpt:
Reactive Attachment Disorder is characterized by the breakdown of social ability of a child.... The children may display either indiscriminate social extroversion as they grow older (treating all people as if they were their best friend) or showing mistrust of nearly everyone.

Marc! Why are you awake right now? STOP IT.

Ash, you guys aren't that close to starting classes! You guys start on like the 21st, right? That's almost my birthday, and it can't be soon, because then soon I'll be old! (Okay, I'm really not old at all, but still).

I'll be almost through my next rotation by the time you're starting classes. So it's kinda far away.

First years: enjoy these last two weeks! It's the last COMPLETELY free time you'll have for a while. 🙂

Second years: enjoy these last four weeks! It's the last COMPLETELY free time you'll have for a really, really long time. 🙂

Now that hell is over and moving is complete...what to do? I can only sit and leech off of Starbuck's internet for so long, so does anyone know a good cheap ISP? If anyone else is in town and wants to tour some local bars while we still can, hit me up.

I just finished my move last weekend as well. I think alot of us are new to the area, so we should start a list of things to do:

  • Jazz in the Park (Thursdays)
  • Little Read Book, Inc. (On State St.)
  • McGillycuddys has live music by King Solomon this coming Thursday (Water St.)
  • The omnipresent Brothers is also on Water St.
  • Highbury Soccer Pub (S. Kinnickinnic Ave)
  • OnMilwaukee.com
This weekend alone, there are three festivals: German Fest, Americana Music Fest, and the Brady Street Artisan Food Festival. Additionally, the excellent reggae band King Solomon is playing an evening show at the Bradford Beach Jam. Would anyone want to go to these? I am still looking for some soccer too, so pass the news on any that you find 🙂

I don't have internet either, so I tried the wifi at MCW without any luck. Stone Creek Coffee shares free internet with their neighboring Bruegger's (closest location to campus is Bluemound and 84th), as does the the Wauwatosa Public Library on North and 76th. Who does everyone else use for an ISP?

Thought it might be nice to meet some people before orientation as well. My buddy (who will also be in our class) and I are going to the Brewers game on Friday night @7:05pm. We will most likely just get some cheap seats. If some people wanted to go we could tailgate before hand and whoever is up for it could hit up a bar or two afterwards. I thought it would be a good place to meet up so let me know if anyone is interested.

Time Warner Cable seems to be the most popular. They have wireless modems available, I believe. Not cheap in any sense of the word, though.

Hey Xandie or Hawkeye, any advice on which 2nd year classes are most skippable?

I'm looking at the draft schedule online and wondering when I'll be able to make it home to let the puppy out for a while. It's definitely going to involve skipping some classes, and it looks like Microbiology will be a good candidate some days, since it's right before lunch. Is Micro self-teachable?

I have time warner -- the all in one plan. my land line is used basically to open the gate at the reserve. i don't have a wireless modem though.. that'd be cool.

Dr. Swan said:

I use AT&T DSL. You have to get a land line, but then the DSL is on special right now for $12.99 a month if you commit to a year. It DOES take them a couple of weeks to set up, but they're very sorry about it. So you get a healthy helping of slow setup with your cheap service.

And for god's sake, don't change the name of your billing, or move but keep the same phone number. You'll be out for 2-3 weeks.

Still, $12.99/month.

How much is the all in one plan? I was looking at their website and they dont have any prices for the package...

and what is it? DSL, home phone and TV? It seems so expensive.

It's digital cable, home phone, and a cable modem. I've used both DSL and cable for my internet service and I have to say I like cable better. That $12.99 for DSL that Samenewme mentioned might be too good to pass up, though. How much is your phone line, Samenewme?

We pay around $130/month for the All in one package. Yes, it's muy expensivo.

Well, I finally broke down and had my landline phone installed this afternoon. There goes some more money I don't have.

I'm up for any social activities! Except this weekend - I'm gone. I've been around all summer, and never found a job and research fell through. But since I didn't know I'd have all this free time I haven't really enjoyed it the way I should. Plus no money. Borrowing form my Grandma to get by.

M2 classes? are you serious? i don't remember jack from second year (most of the material included). from what i remember, path is spotty in terms of lecture quality (i do remember that becker's lectures were sub-par, even for path). i seem to remember many of the micro lectures being useful, though. xandie can hopefully be of more help--sorry.

Sure, Travis, pass the buck to me.

K, so I stopped going to path around October and it was the most phenomenal life choice ever. However, I thought Micro was useful (and I struggled there), and I absolutely attended every pharm lecture. Micro lab is required, and path CBLs and labs are "required"... some CBL people take attendence, some don't. Nobody takes attendence at lab though. But I learned a lot in CBL.

Ethics and Psych are required too, as is CER small group. So I guess that's bad news, but really, even if you attend only the required stuff, it's less than two hours a day (except Tuesdays). So yeah.

I was recently at MCW, and saw that M1 books are on sale right now. Should I buy books now, or wait until orientation?

I guess that depends on your personal style. Some people really like to have their books right away so they can hit the ground running, but I think most people would tell you to wait a bit. Not every recommended book is necessary (I think we've gone over that before in this thread in detail), so if you buy all the books now you'll likely waste money. Don't forget, your Big Sib may also have a ton of stuff to give/loan you.

Pratik, are we doing anything interesting for the orientation fair for our Anesthesiology Interest Group booth? Are you gonna be there? We never took any pictures at any of our events last year, so there's not much we can do in the way of a poster or anything. Let me know if you have the ambition to do something, 'cause I sure don't with a wedding coming up shortly.

I gave a tour of MCW to some Upward Bound students from Green Bay, and part of it was a tour of the STAR Center given by the lady that runs it. She showed us the anesthesia simulator, which was wicked sweet. We will definitely have to talk to Dr. Ebert about getting a demonstration for a group activity this year.

Sorry to totally co-opt the thread for my own purposes....keep the questions coming, M1's!

Andy, you answered 1 of Gina and my questions for the org fair from all of our numerous emails, but you didn't answer all of them 😉. I guess if necessary we can harrass you tonight at another meeting oh joy! Actually, Pratik has never once responded to our emails. Slacker! 😀

I have the very basic phone service for not more than $25 a month, tax included. Then the $12.99 DSL on top of that. I will say again that AT&T is a huge messy bureaucracy to deal with, so consider yourself warned. But still. Cheaptastic. You do have to look up the ads for specials and ask for them specifically when you order or they'll stick you with full price. I don't know if they're waiving setup fees or not, so you'll have to call and argue with them yourself to find out.

I have the slower of the two DSL speeds available, and I have been quite happy with it. For another $10 a month or so, you can go faster. But I've never felt the need, thougH I am not a patient woman.

I can't exactly recommend the experience of waiting for your service to be turned on, and calling up and getting a different story every two days, along a very professionally-worded, polite apology. But the price? Man.

Sorry, Ashleigh, I've been getting so many random e-mails lately that they've been going in one ear and out the other. I won't be at the meeting tonight. What do you need to know? Here, let me answer the questions I already know you're going to ask: Yes, I will require a chauffered limo with a fully stocked bar to and from the Organizations Fair, and will need access to a private bathroom with a brand new toilet seat at the event. Also, please provide a bowl of green M&Ms, and a stripper's ass for me to snort rails off of.

There, that should take care of your main questions. Let me know if there's anything else I can clear up for you.

Do you need a banner?
Who's going to be at the 8 Aug org fair?
Are you guys going to be at the 25 Aug org fair, and if so, who'll be at the table?
Do you need anything special (aside from your previously mentioned stuff) like power supply, easle (sp?), etc.

I think that's it. I guess I won't see you tonight.

Andy,

My deepest apologies for slacking on the AIG stuff. Im not gonna be in town till the 17th, so i wont be at the fair. But I can design a banner or poster and email it to you. I dont blame you if you dont have time cause of the wedding...heavens knows yall are prob running around making final preperations.

The simulator does sound wicked cool. I but there are a bunch of procedures they can show use in addition like intubation and bier blocks and art lines. I would also like to suggest to Dr Ebert that we go to the chancery...get a small group of students drunk...pass out and practice intubating each other. I think the Anesthesia dept would be willing to fund our educational event.

And Ashers, you are correct..i havent responded to the org fair emails....or the student assembly emails(I didnt realize i was part of the assembly until i remembered, 3 weeks later, the admission rep is part of the assembly) ...or the freshman facebook thingy. Dont take it personally. 😀

why i felt the need to post all this on a public forum is beyond me.

Edit: Pratik - you posted while I was writing this...looks like you answered all the questions already. If you want to do some sort of poster, I can have Kinko's print it up that week. No worries on the slacking business...the AIG has been the furthest thing from my mind this summer.

Just the ass will suffice.

1) You guys are doing banners? If you can make a banner to hang off the front of the table or something, that would be sweet! Be sure to include the universal symbol for anesthesiology...a, uhh...dragon. Yeah, that's it, a dragon!

Seriously, yes, we would like a banner. Right now it sounds like we will just be sitting there with a pad of paper otherwise. Do you need other info for it? Preferably, it would say Anesthesiology Interest Group or Anesthesiology IG, because I don't think people will know what AIG stands for.

2) I will definitely be there, and I'm pretty sure Pratik will be back in town by then. Pratik?

3) We aren't a dues collecting organization, so I believe our presence at the fair on the 25th would be unnecessary.

4) No need for anything else special, unless Pratik gets ambitious and makes a kick-ass poster or diorama or something. Pratik?

Thanks Ashleigh!
