Mele Kalikimaka!

Is the thing to say, on a bright, Hawaiian Christmas day.
That's the island greeting that we send to you, from the land where palm trees sway!
Here we know that Christmas will be green and bright
The sun to shine by day and all the stars at night!
Mele Kalikimaka is Hawaii's way to say Merry Christmas to you.

YAY!!!!! I'm going home soon!!!!!!!!!! I haven't been home since last Christmas

Glad to hear it. After this semester, you've definitely earned a little beach time.

And so have I. That's why I'm on expedia.com right now looking at packages to Maui for spring break. You know, instead of studying.

How is the west side of the island for a base of operations? Ka'anapali?

man, you guys are pretty pathetic. You should try the language of the truly elite.

Yeah, the wife and I are planning to go to Europe in June, and we kinda decided to look into the possibility of going to Vegas over spring break a la frugal. I told her that I felt like I didn't have a lot to look forward to for a while 😛 so we thought maybe we'd do something out of the blue. What's the weather in Vegas like in March?

also, rather than studying, I might be seeing my grandfather for the last time. 🙁 It looks like this might be it. I'm just glad he moved out here last year, because he was in New York before this, and it'd be impossible for me to get out there now.

Ka'anapali is fun. It's a good location. It can be a bit rainy though, but in the spring it usually is rainy over the entire island, except for maybe Kihei.

Vegas in March is just like any other time of the year...hotter than f*ck. The key is to go on a week/weekend that there isn't some gigantic convention going on in Vegas; hotel prices skyrocket during conventions.

Sorry to hear about your grandpa.

Jenny and I already have our plane tix for Florida during spring break. We're going to stay with her snowbird parents in Punta Gorda. Yeeha for free room and board! How much are plane tickets going for for Hawaii, Funk? I was un-pleasantly surprised at how much we paid for Florida.

I'm very sorry to hear this. My thoughts and best to you and your family.

I'm so sorry about your grandfather. We'll all be thinking about you and your family here on SDN.

It just might come out sounding a little goofy while we do. 😉 (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

Thanks. Most of the family is taking to it as well as can be expected, but one of my aunts is looking for the doctors to work miracles (and do lots of expensive tests), none of which interest my grandpa. Living in a nursing home would be about the worst thing for a man that independent. I just hope he can die with dignity. 🙁

Good Lord. Not to make light of your situation in any way, but that sounds like just about every ethics case study we had this year. Does your grandpa have an advanced directive? Don't let your aunt throw her weight around like that if it's not what he wants. Ethics consult, STAT!

No, I totally understand. I was pretty upset last night when my mom was telling me this, because I know it's not what he wants. Furthermore, I think it's a huge waste of money. He does have advanced directives that specifically forbid things, but he's still a partial code....I just hope this doesn't get dragged out.

so tell me, Andy...why is it that I talk to you today, and now tonight my shoulder/neck is killing me???? hurts like a mofo. Thanks a lot.

I wish there was a high-rise apartment building attached via skywalk to MCW and Froedtert. Adios commute.

Just wanted to let everyone know that today is National Day of the Ninja!!! December 5th is the one chance for all you "nonjas" out there to don the black cloak of invisibility and be as sneaky, deadly, and downright cool as you possibly can be. It is also your only chance to catch up with your favorite neighborhood Ninja of Funk, as he will be slowing down to mere mortal speed for just one day and spending time stalking within the hallowed halls of MCW.

If you're not sure how to be a ninja, here's a primer: read The Way of the Ninja: Secret Techniques, buy some ninja gear, and maybe even a uniform to wear if you're too busy to make your own or don't have the requisite scales from a level 9 dark dragon handy.

Finally, an announcement spreading the word about National Day of the Ninja. Enjoy, and Happy National Day of the Ninja everyone!!!

I see no video, Funk.

Maybe everyone should watch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in honor of today. I have some of the cartoons on DVD.

Fixed, I think. Those youtube tags are crazy. Crazy I tell you!!!

You probably strained your throat trying to swallow his soul. Let that be a lesson to you!

Chew every bite 20 times.

That's the singer from Rascal Flatts on the left. We have a celebrity at mcw!

looks like her to me. I only went once though. Tutoring doesn't really help me - it's not that I don't understand the concepts, I just don't remember them. 😛

That's been my experience too. I read something, and think "well, yeah, that makes sense" but then remembering it is a whole 'nother story.

Mwuah-ha-haaa....my diabolical plan has come to fruition! I genetically engineered a novel protozoan (Plasmodium torticollum) and infected myself with it. Then I trained some mosquitoes to bite me and then bite you, thus transmitting my infectious form of torticollis. It was really quite a genius diabolical plan. Too bad the infection is fatal...I should have thought this through better.

Seriously, though, that sucks. My neck is finally starting to feel better, although I can still only tilt it about 20 degrees to the right or left before it hurts really bad. My group's neurologist today in CER didn't sound like she wanted to check it out for me. 😡

True quote of a question a girl asked our professor during class today: "Is it true that the anal wink reflex is diminished in receptive gay men?"

I guess I don't see how enjoying getting rammed up the butt would diminish one's reflexes any. I suppose the reflex could be suppressed (think: gag reflex + pornstars), but it should still be present in any gay man you would be testing it on, I would think. I mean, just because I like getting poked in the eye doesn't mean my blink reflex would be diminished, so why would it be any different for the anus.

Here's an interesting little history tidbit about the anocutaneous reflex for anyone curious:

Wikipedia said:
Dr. Bruce Woodling developed the anal wink test which he alleged was an indisputable diagnostic indicator that a child had been sodomised. In a clinical setting, he would spread a child’s buttocks and touch the anus with a cotton swab. If the anus "winked", Woodling testified, this was "proof of sodomy". His testimony was prominent in the McMartin preschool child abuse case.

It has since been established that Woodling never made any effort to validate his test, and it has been utterly discredited.

Woodling's pseudoscientific testimony contributed to Ray Buckey spending five years in prison without bail, aduring his trial. Buckey was later released without conviction.

luckily mine went away a few hours later after a good dose of naproxen.

I'm jealous. I was loading up on 500mg naproxen tablets Jenny had prescribed for when she had medication-induced erythema nodosum. They didn't do **** for me. Hopefully I don't get a bleeding ulcer from taking so many NSAIDS. (BTW, does it make sense to take an antacid or PPI with your NSAIDS if you have been going a little heavy on them? I figured it couldn't hurt, so I took a PrevAcid both days this weekend.)

I used to take a gram of L-Glutamine with my NSAIDS, and found it VERY helpful. I suppose I should be curious what the mechanism is alleged to be.

How often were you taking NSAIDS? I wonder how much damage you can do with a few days of probably overdoing it with them? I'd be interested in hearing the purported mechanism, too. Who told you to do it?

Related NSAIDS story: my grandma (s/p an aortic valve replacement and quadruple CABG) started having stable angina about 2 years after her surgery. Instead of telling anyone about it (like her son who is a pharmacist, her medical student grandson, or, I dunno, her CARDIOLOGIST!), she just started taking loads of NSAIDS. Wound up in the hospital on Christmas with a bleeding ulcer, and ended up needing an angioplasty for her CAD.

Moral of the story: medicine is overrated.

I love how we're just guessing at stuff now. Hhhmmm...mix these drugs, eh, why not!

I had some bigtime wisdom tooth pain last fall, so I was taking a buttload of advil everyday. so i asked my RN mom how much advil is too much. After she told me how much people get in the hospital, I wasn't concerned about taking too much anymore.

Of course, this wasn't over a long span of time. Let me guess, Andy. Your grandma "didn't want to be a bother."

Well, for M2s -- final (singular), block exam and midterm.

CER is a final if I ever smelled one. So let's make that 2 finals and 1 block exam that will probably be heinous because the pathology course here is "special."

Yeah, the only citation I can find on the glutamine and NSAIDS (other than from the supplement pushers) is this one, animal study.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/...ve&db=PubMed&list_uids=15564804&dopt=Abstract

But, yummy yummy glutamine! When I was taking 1000 mg Naproxen 3 times a day, I would have swallowed red-hot glass if someone told me my stomach would feel better.

Oh, kids... I would honestly trade my psych shelf for 2nd year winter finals... mostly because I failed them and it didn't affect my grades at all. Almost makes me a little nostalgic for last year. But not really.

Just so you guys know, third years do actually get 11 days off over the holiday. In a row!! I'm so very, very excited...
