MCW Class of 2010, Part 3

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
CER has, through some unbelievably strong classical conditioning, caused me to hate all aspects of the physical exam and physician-patient contact in general. If only psychiatry paid more than a pittance I would probably jump all over that specialty. Sit around BSing with complete crazies while only paying lip-service to boring hard science? I'm all about that.

Alas, I would like to actually make some headway on my school debt and actually own a house before I become a 40 year old physician. That being said, I'll be checking out radiology next year. 😉

any and all students are welcome to physically examine me to increase both your own and my appreciation for the art.

Crap. I just realized that the response I got about my apartment was for someone who is visiting the US from the UK.

It took awhile, but it eventually clicked that they'd probably want a furnished apartment. Oops. Is that something I should specify in my ad? I put it under subletting/temp - I didn't think that that would imply furnished.

Back to the drawing board...

It wouldn't necessarily imply that to me, but I think for a lot of people it would.

If I was looking for an apartment I would assume that there is no furniture involved unless it specifically says furnished.

I saw Dr. Krippendorf jump on stage at a Snoop Dogg concert and punch the guy with the purple hat in the mouth! Then, she stole his blunt and smoked the whole thing in one pull! Then, she grabbed the microphone from snoop and started lecturing 12,000 people about head and neck anatomy. She was talking so fast that I couldn't hardly get it all written down.

I didn't realize that we were responsible for material covered in spontaneous lecture "jam sessions" all over the country. Med school is teh hard.

been dreaming a lot again?

Haha yep. I think I woke up during the dream then fell back asleep and the dream kind of continued. But, I was really confused about where I was when I woke up so I might not have actually woken up all the way. Either way....weird.

Now that I think about it, Dr. Krippendorf is more of a Rascal Flatts kind of gal.

I bet she jams out to the fine musical stylings of rock supergroup Boston.

Who sings, "Don't stop believin'" ?

Should I change my username? Dr. Mom is taking submissions to change usernames while still maintaining your post-count. I was thinking of changing it to something inspired by M*A*S*H, my favorite medicine-related show. Give me suggestions! (MASH-related or otherwise)

Journey, but Krippendorf would definitely sing "Wheel in the Sky" over "Don't Stop Believin'."
Separate Ways by Journey is one of the greatest songs of the 80s, along with a few by Bon Jovi, a little Motley Crue, and, of course, The Final Countdown, by Europe. And some Scorpions.

how about "Splat's Nemesis?"

Don't take that from Splat--we all know he's a pushover. Heck, I made him give me his seat in the lecture hall today.

Did you look before you sat down in it? Might want to check the seat of your pants.

The way you left his stuff too, he shouldn't've noticed, except maybe for the fact that I wasn't sitting one seat away from him anymore.

It's true. His trap-like short term memory (much like the graceful sea snail) must have outted my transgression.

No matter. Someone needs to keep him from getting all uppity, right?

i have the death sentence on twelve systems!!

I'm just not as committed to this thread as I was to the last one. I'm a little homesick.

Okay, so going back to the CER stuff:

Apparently I did not write the email politely enough. This is what Dr. Mitchell said:

"PS. You may wish to re-read your email and see if the tone is appropriate. It is always hard to pick up the intended tone in written communication, so I may be wrong, but precisely because it is hard to pick up the tone, you should error on the polite side."

I tried to write as politely as I could while still expressing my displeasure and frustration. Oh well. This is what I wrote:

I am writing to contest our need to write-up the Mr. B case. I was in the first session on Tuesday, and upon arrival that afternoon I asked specifically, and was informed that there would be NO write-up. I did read the syllabus, but syllabi are never 100% accurate, and I assumed that I was informed correctly in class. Therefore, I did not take any notes of any kind that day. At best, maybe 1/3 of the people in that session took notes on the history. Furthermore, the patient did not show up, and the physical exam was performed on a classmate. Hence, there were no abnormal findings.

Are we expected to just make up a story for the write-up then? I don't see how else anyone who attended the Mr. B session on Tuesday specifically will be able to write up a non-existent patient with no notes taken.

Thank you,

April Peterson

I guess I can see where she might get upset from the 2nd part, but if we were going to still have to do the write-up, I wanted a clarification on what we were supposed to do.

Whatever.

Your e-mail was a little forward, but it wasn't that bad. She talks down to us way worse during her lectures (when she's not reading directly off the slides). I guess what I'm trying to say is, **** Dr. Mitchell in her condescending ass. I'm done with her. She's just another example of how a ****ty course director can turn a very promising course with potential to teach us useful info for the real world into total garbage.

At least they backpedaled and made the write-up optional now. It was probably partly due to your e-mail. Thanks, April!

Same here. I think that's why we've seen the resurgence of the 2009 thread, as well. Give this one time, though...it'll grow on us!

I'm right there with you. My email was pretty forward, but I wanted to get my point across. I didn't want to be so polite and say "pretty please" because then nothing probably would've happened. Like I said earlier, I wanted her to understand that students were frustrated and mad.

Thanks for your thoughts Andy.

BTW, I don't have any MASH ideas for ya. Sorry.

Dr. Mitchell probably received a bunch of emails just like yours. Otherwise, oh well....they'll live.

I replied to the "you need to write it up email" as soon as I got it yesterday, so mine only went to Leslie...but I think mine was a bit more abrupt and possibly more "rude" than akpete's. Sometimes when I get tired and burnt out I turn into a jerk.... here it is in its entirety.

"And for the majority of students, whom I did not see taking notes for the Mr. B exam since we were under the impression that we would NOT be writing it up, what should we do now? Please advise."

That was pretty blunt. Nice!! 👍

I think i'll have to be more careful in the future though...don't want that getting me into trouble on rotations...i've developed quite a chip on my shoulder the last year and a half.

You're not the only one.

Mine is wood. Ash, to be precise.

Ash is quite a good wood (and name).

I think my chip is semi-sweet chocolate. I've gone from nice milk chocolate to more bitter every day, especially when some of my favorite classes are involved. The only class I'm not mad at right now is pharm. Maybe by the end of this semester it'll be baking chocolate.

Once again I was unable to fall asleep until 3am. If it is sunny 2 days in a row I'm able to fall asleep and wake up easily but it has been cloudy for 2 days and so I sleeped all through my classes.

Does anyone else find the Office hysterical? It is the best show on TV.

and just like a disease, all the faces I see...remind me of you.

At first glance I read that feces reminds you of andy8675309. I thought to myself, "wow, their relationship has really deteriorated." good times

I should've done that. The wifey had to work at 7am today, so I was sleeping in the new student lounge from 6:30 until we had our 9am lecture, which I nodded off during.....my class attendance is slipping. (I'm skipping Krippendorf's lecture right now)

I'm going to be doing a lot more studying at the Tosa library these days. Fewer distractions, and the bus goes directly from my front door to the library (no such route for school).

How far away from school do you live?

I haven't been going to class very much either. I feel like it is more effecient to listen to the lectures at 1.5 speed than to go to class. Although, if I'm up I'll go since it sort of gets my day started.

I bought some sweet headphones that block out the noise while I'm studying so I can pretty much study anywhere. I can't study when it is loud or silent so I have to have some kind of ambient noise.

I'm having the same problems. I can't seem to fall asleep until 4am even if I was up at 8am that day. It's like my body is in complete denial that nighttime is sleepy time. So than I wake up early for mandatory crap, but just barely, or I sleep until somewhere in the noon to 2pm range. And I've woken up with a headache everyday.

And the Office is hysterical. However, I think the Scrubs musical last night topped it.

Your dog lets you sleep that late? Mine is like a friggin' alarm clock every morning at 6 AM.

I'm at 90th and North. Farther than I like to walk, and the bicycle is a bit dangerous (and very cold) this time of year.

wow, I did that during break, but I'd feel very naughty doing that during school. 😛 plus, my wife doesn't like it when I wake her up (accidentally) when I get into bed 2 hours before she has to wake up. 😀

Sleeping too much gives me headaches sometimes - but it might be partly because you haven't had caffeine in a while, so you get a caffeine headache (if you're a Mountain Dew addict like me)

My dog sleeps as long as I do, and if I have to get up early, she'll often go back to bed. It's awesome.

I'm getting headaches regardless if I sleep 5 hours or 12. And 10 hours is my usual. So I dunno.

How soothing are sleeping puppies?

...and last night I got home and into bed at 4:30ish and woke up at 10:30 with no alarm. It makes no sense!

On a different topic, I heard that some students aren't even bothering to study Stekiel's lectures because M2s have been telling them that the questions are so hard that you will get them wrong anyway. His material didn't seem THAT hard...I don't feel like I should cut my losses or wave the white flag. Am i missing something?

cripes no. if you feel like you have a handle on the other stuff, give it a shot. i will admit I thought his questions were somewhat insane, but trying gives you more of a chance than pure chance.

m2s are stupid stupid people. don't listen to them, ever. except this one time.
